1. Layer it up and accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. Opting for a new necklace or bracelet will take a once-tired sweater to stylish new heights. Try layering the sweater over a colorful button-down, adding a glittery collar necklace, and heading out the door. (Check out these tips for how to layer.)

2. Dye it. Dyeing might be frightening because of its very permanent status, but with all eyes on ombre at the moment, it can’t hurt to give it a shot (peep the DIY here). Just add some bold leggings for an of-the-moment ensemble.

3. Let your tailor work some magic. Everyone’s familiar with denim cutoffs, but why not try altering some outdated dress pants? With the help of a tailor, cut those slacks and give them a cuffed hem for a fancier alternative to jean shorts. Pair with tights in all patterns and colors – they’ll add an extra dose of flair.

4. Or, do it yourself. Got a beloved shirt that’s lost its shape? Make it a vest. This one’s not for the craftily challenged – you’ll need some sewing skills. But throw it on over a new sundress and add a belt, and that old favorite will take on new life.

Jewel-tone hues are making a comeback – in a big way. Pantone, the leading authority on color trends, has ruled emerald as the color of the year for 2013, and we can’t wait to start incorporating it into our closets. Here’s how:

Start small. Try mixing the color into your accessories first. A pair of teardrop earrings, a statement necklace, or an eye-catching bracelet (like the one above) boasting the shade will automatically boost your day-to-day wardrobe.

Contrast. Pair this tone with different textures (think wool and silk or chiffon and leather) and other complementary shades, like navy, for a look that makes a statement – but not too loudly.

Make it your basic. Opt for this rich color instead of reaching for your go-to white V-neck the next time you feel like dressing down.
