New year, new wardrobe, right? Yes – but that doesn’t mean ditching your old sartorial standbys. In fact, sometimes it just takes a few updates (a new necklace here, a new way to style there) to turn old favorites into completely fresh-feeling outfits. Here’s how:

1. Layer it up and accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. Opting for a new necklace or bracelet will take a once-tired sweater to stylish new heights. Try layering the sweater over a colorful button-down, adding a glittery collar necklace, and heading out the door. (Check out these tips for how to layer.)

2. Dye it. Dyeing might be frightening because of its very permanent status, but with all eyes on ombre at the moment, it can’t hurt to give it a shot (peep the DIY here). Just add some bold leggings for an of-the-moment ensemble.

3. Let your tailor work some magic. Everyone’s familiar with denim cutoffs, but why not try altering some outdated dress pants? With the help of a tailor, cut those slacks and give them a cuffed hem for a fancier alternative to jean shorts. Pair with tights in all patterns and colors – they’ll add an extra dose of flair.

4. Or, do it yourself. Got a beloved shirt that’s lost its shape? Make it a vest. This one’s not for the craftily challenged – you’ll need some sewing skills. But throw it on over a new sundress and add a belt, and that old favorite will take on new life.

Jewel-tone hues are making a comeback – in a big way. Pantone, the leading authority on color trends, has ruled emerald as the color of the year for 2013, and we can’t wait to start incorporating it into our closets. Here’s how:

Start small. Try mixing the color into your accessories first. A pair of teardrop earrings, a statement necklace, or an eye-catching bracelet (like the one above) boasting the shade will automatically boost your day-to-day wardrobe.

Contrast. Pair this tone with different textures (think wool and silk or chiffon and leather) and other complementary shades, like navy, for a look that makes a statement – but not too loudly.

Make it your basic. Opt for this rich color instead of reaching for your go-to white V-neck the next time you feel like dressing down.

Dress it up. Say goodbye to your favorite LBD and show up to your next cocktail party draped in this lush tone.

Switch up your shoes. Now would be the perfect time to swap your standard black pumps for a pair of emerald suede heels (sky-high encouraged).

Clutch it. Nothing inserts a pop of color into an outfit like a unique bag. A metallic leather clutch in this rich shade will add an unexpected touch to an otherwise toned-down blazer-and-heels ensemble.

10 TIPS FROM SPANX FOUNDER SARA BLAKELY

While we usually look for ways to update our wardrobe by adding from the top down, a re-thinking of basics can add life, shape, and a definite boost of confidence. SPANX founder Sara Blakely shared with us her favorite ways to work in some truly transformational base-layer updates.

1. Pencil skirts are everywhere this season. Wear one with a half slip or try a pair of sheer control top pantyhose for an extra-polished look and hourglass silhouette.

2. Try a SPANX black lace cami under a long cardigan for a cool, layered look and a little extra tummy control.

3. Pair lace tights with tougher footwear like cowboy boots for a flirty look with an edge.

4. Try a silky, wide leg pant. Footless Pantyhose help ensure a VPL-free rear view.

5. Keep summer shorts out longer by wearing a pair of tights underneath.

6. Cashmere sweaters are a cozy, classic fall staple. Layer a shaping cami underneath for a smooth, cling-free look that will never go out of style.

7. Sport a sleek turtleneck and accessorize with jewelry. Go with black for extra slimming or try another neutral like warm camel or gold.

8. Try a pair of footless tights with ballet flats and a mid-length full skirt for a casual but still stylish alternative to jeans.

9. Rock the sexy, sheer trend this season without feeling overexposed. Layer a lace full slip underneath a sheer dress for support, coverage, and an added touch of femininity.

10. Layer a high-rise body smoother underneath a curve-hugging, vintage-inspired dress to get in on the Mad Men trend and have a little extra breathing room.
