How to Care for Your Spring Knits

Keep those lightweight knits in top shape with these steps

The return to breezy springtime knits is just around the corner, and – no offense to my winter parka – I can’t wait. Leaving the house sans coat is a sure sign that warmer weather is here, but without the outfit-hiding jacket, keeping my sweaters looking like new is a top priority. Here’s everything you need to know about keeping your knitted pieces in their best shape.

Everything You Never Knew About Cashmere

From the softer-than-soft feel to the luxurious look, there’s no denying that cashmere is a cold-weather must. But what you didn’t know? Here I unravel five lesser-known truths about the textile.

1. ”Cashmere” derives from Kashmir – the region in southern Asia that first exported it.

2. The yarn comes from the fine undercoat fibers of the cashmere goat.

3. No wrinkles here – pack plenty of scarves, sweaters, tees, and more for throw-on-and-go holiday travel.

4. Cashmere becomes softer with age (yes, you heard right), so stock up.

5. This textile warms in winter and cools in spring for year-round wear and double the use.

Yes, You Can: Oversize Your Sweater

From epic-proportion pants to the jumbo, sleeping-bag comfort of a cocoon coat, for AW12, bigger is seemingly better. And thankfully for those of us who like to raid our manfriend’s closet, the easiest oversized item to toss on this winter is… the sweater.

We couldn’t agree more with the styling tips in this video post from Refinery29 – the oversized sweater is a do, for work, play, and, above all else, comfort (which is absolutely necessary when you’re also wearing 5-inch stilletos). Here’s how we’re taking on the trend in the Rue offices:

Size Up – While many designers are making sweaters extra large this season, try on both your regular size and one size larger. Then choose your desired level of slouchiness.

Check Your Shoulders – A drop shoulder (one that falls a couple of inches below your natural shoulder line) is great – if the sweater is designed that way. Watch the shoulder seam if the garment is not designed with a drop shoulder – if you go too big and the seam creeps too low, you risk looking like you got swallowed by a loom.

Style It – Try a collared shirt peeking out from the neckline. Wear it with skinnies and heels. Or show some leg and anchor it with a mini.

Tuck – Not the whole sweater! Just a corner tucked up into the waist lends some shape when needed.

And Roll – Try a jumbo sweater with sleeves that hit somewhere between the elbow and wrist. If the sleeves hit the wrists, roll or scrunch to show a little skin.

Now, for goodness’ sake, get out there and get cozy.

Stylists’ Picks: The Fall Trends to Look Out for

The best part of having a photo studio in your company’s building? You can rely on an expert team of stylists to give you on-trend tips. For this season’s staples, I sat down with stylist Alexandra to get the scoop on what every wardrobe needs for fall.

Cozy Knits
“You can wear a cozy knit with everything,” says Alexandra. Dress it up with a cashmere cardigan or down with an oversized sweater. (I love the oversized look with a pair of dark skinnies.)

Silk Blouses
A feminine fall staple, a silk blouse not only feels indulgent, but is also the perfect transitional piece. Easy to layer, it works with skinny jeans on the weekend or with a pencil skirt at work. “I’m all about blouses with tiny prints,” Alexandra says.

Leather
We’ve been obsessing over leather all season, but Alexandra assures us it’s the right attitude to have. “It’s my number one must-have. You need to invest in a good leather jacket,” she says. “You can wear it over jeans, with flats, or over a dress.” Versatile, indeed.

Loafers
“Penny loafers are back!” says Alexandra. “And I especially love them in a metallic.” The menswear-inspired styles are both comfy and casual, making them a perfect shoe for morning commutes and fall foliage excursions.

Whether I need a cozy collegiate-inspired sweater for game day or a wool shift dress for just about anything, our Brooks Brothers Boutique is fueling any and all additions to my must-have list.

1. Brooks Brothers Navy Wool University Sweater
Paired with jeans, boots, and a toasty scarf, this sweater is perfect for the big game.

2. Brooks Brothers Navy Corduroy Skirt
Bringing a cozy feel to the office is definitely a to-do this season, and this skirt puts a feminine twist on the corduroy trend while still being work appropriate.

3. Brooks Brothers Black Wool Shift Dress
Who doesn’t love a versatile LBD? As soon as I saw this classic silhouette I just knew I had to have it for all the upcoming holiday festivities.
