Olivia Chantecaille and I go way back, having first met six or seven years ago when I interviewed the striking beauty guru for a shopping column I used to write for Fashion Wire Daily.

So I was delighted when she recently invited me to Chantecaille’s newly revamped Soho office for a sneak peek at their new collections and the skinny on her not-so-average workday. (Chantecaille was founded by Olivia’s mother, Sylvie, in 1997 – her father, Olivier, and sister Alex now work for the company, as well.)

“Every day is so different, which is the fun part of my job,” Olivia told me as we sat in a corner of the loft-like whitewashed space in front of a display of Chantecaille cosmetics, all of which I was dying to play with. “I wear so many hats. For example, tomorrow I’m going to one of our labs to work on our new spring colors for 2012, which is very exciting. They’re actually a lab based in Italy, outside of Milan, but they have a satellite lab here [in upstate New York] where we can go and mix colors that they’ll produce in Italy. It’s a great, fun place to work with the technicians and be very creative and come up with all the new shades that were inspired by the current fashion trends.”

But before she turned her attention to next spring, I wanted to know what we could expect for Spring/Summer 2011. “This season was about two things: neutrals and color, and the balance between them,” she said. “So if you’re going to wear a lot of color [in your clothing], wear neutral colors on your face — or choose one pop color if you’re wearing neutral clothing.”

There’s also a movement toward very clean, healthy skin this season, which Chantecaille translated into three new products: Poudre de Perle, a mineral blush housed in its own flow-through brush (a similar refillable container houses Chantecaille’s Protection Naturelle loose powder, which contains SPF 46+ for on-the-go touch-ups). Ultra Sun Protection Anti-Glycation Primer, meanwhile, protects against the elements thanks to its collagen-boosting formula and SPF 50+ and can be worn alone or under foundation. For those of us who want to look sun-kissed without the sun damage, there’s Compact Soleil in St. Barth’s, a warm brown shade with sunny golden pearl highlights. Chantecaille’s spring/summer color palette was inspired by sea turtles, one of Olivia’s current obsessions (five percent of the proceeds from the sale of the eye/cheek palette go to WIDECAST, a Caribbean non-profit dedicated to saving sea turtles).

For fall, it’s all about a strong lip or a strong eye. “It’s very powerful and feminine and seductive,” enthused Olivia as she fanned out color copies of her fall inspiration boards. She snapped open a square grey compact to reveal “The New Classic” palette, which is all sophisticated inky plums for the eyes and a shimmery peachy-pink blush, offset by two new Lip Chic lipsticks in rich berry shades of Calla Lily and Violetta. They’re also launching a new version of Mascara Faux Cils, with a peptide that actually helps lashes grow (yes, really).

In addition to serving as Creative Director and the brand’s public face (that’s her gorgeous mug you see in all Chantecaille advertising and store displays), Olivia also personally presents all new products to editors, and designs the preview packaging, and oversees all global PR and US advertising as well – “from handling the accounts to working on the design of the ads.” She touts “the magic of the iPad” with helping her get it all done. “I am on it from the time I wake up until I go to sleep — and it’s also amazing for when I’m traveling.”

“I’m very lucky because I love my family and get along with them very well, so I’m actually very fortunate to work with them,” said Olivia as we prepared to say good-bye. “So it’s a great situation. It may not work for everybody, but it works for me.”

Summer is officially here, and as the temperature goes up, so too does our fear of having less-than-ready-for-airtime limbs. By now we all know about the dangers of skin cancer – so faux tanning is the chicest, safest way to get that bronze glow.

Self tanners have come such a long way from when they first hit the scene (no more of that “fake tan” smell, orange hue, streaks, or spots!). There are so many great products on the market now, whether self tanners, gradual tanners, or bronzers.

A self tanner will give you that sunkissed color without being exposed to the sun. Its main ingredient is DHA (dihydroxyacetone), which reacts to your amino acids, giving you a golden glow in 3-4 hours that will last about 5-7 days. Just don’t shower or sweat for about four hours to give the self tanner time to develop.

Gradual tanners give you a golden glow after a few days of use – you’ll be your darkest after about four days, and you’ll maintain the color as long as you continue using them daily.

Bronzers are mainly makeup lotions or powders – they provide immediate color and wash off in the shower. Just be careful if you’re wearing tight or light clothing – the bronzer might rub off and stain.

I prefer using self tanners over spray tanning for a few reasons. One, because I like to be golden all the time and I can maintain my tan more easily at home day after day. It’s also much more cost effective to do it on your own – it’s about $25+ for one spray tan that will last 5-7 days, or you can purchase one of the products I mentioned for $30-35 and you will get about 5-8 applications out of them. If you’re tanning for a special occasion and not comfortable or patient doing it yourself, then the spray tan might be for you.

My top 3 products:
St. Tropez Self Tanner (lotion)
Dior Self Tanner (gel)
Tan Towel

St. Tropez has a light floral smell – not that “fake tan” smell. Just put it on (with gloves), let it develop for four hours (or overnight – what I do) and shower in the morning for a gorgeous glow. Things to note: When you put the lotion on, wear gloves. You will look streaky when you’re finished, but the excess product will wash off when you shower – it will also rub off on your clothes, so don’t wear white. This product takes more work than the others, but it does give the most color.

Dior is much easier – it’s better if you need color quick and you’re on the go. All you need is 20 minutes to let it dry before you put clothes on.

The tan towel is super easy to apply as well. You might smell a slight “tanning smell” when you first apply it.

Make sure you exfoliate and shave before your first application for an even tan – especially with self tanners. And wash your hands when you’re done applying – tan palms are not a good look for anyone. And don’t forget to accessorize and bring out your tan even more with pastel and neon nail polishes and coral and hot pink lipsticks (totally in for summer).

BY JAMIE SANDERS, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, THE BEAUTY OF LIFE

Heading to the beach this summer - and have no clue what beauty products you’ll need? We’ve rounded up the must-haves to get you through surf and sand in style.

Sun protection is key - whether you’re actively soaking up the sun’s rays or just strolling the boardwalk. We’re partial to Supergoop! - every product in the line has SPF 30+, and sunscreen comes in the form of everything from Sunscreen Swipes with Zinc to Body Moisturizing Sun Protection Lotion.

If you’re like us, you can’t stand to be without a little perfume. Anywhere. But toting tons of unwieldy bottles to the beach? Not fun. A rollerball makes fragrance chicly portable. Marc Jacobs “Daisy,” DKNY “Be Delicious,” and Stella McCartney “Stella” are a few of our faves.

Waterproof mascara is a lifesaver for those of us who can’t stand to be without eye makeup! Dior DiorShow Waterproof Mascara comes in a myriad of shades and makes lashes look incredible. We’re talking long, curly, thick, hit-your-sunglasses lashes.

Even lips need a little sun protection when you’re taking in harsh rays. Clinique Sun SPF 45 Targeted Protection Stick is perfect - just slick it across your lips and you’ll be saved from unsightly chapping and burning. True story - we used it during a 10-day trip to Hawaii and came back with a pout as supple as the day we left!

If you’re craving color on your lips but don’t want to reapply a million times, invest in a lip stain. We love MAC Pro Longwear Lipstain Marker. It comes in nine different shades, from “Tomorrow’s Coral” (a mid-tone bluish red) to “Point of View” (a light neutral) - and it does. not. budge.

You won’t want to forget your tresses while on the beach. Whether you actually take a dip in the ocean or just want your hair to look like you did, spritz it with Bumble and bumble Surf Spray. It gives locks sexy, piecey, I-just-went-swimming-in-the-Pacific-Ocean waves in five seconds flat.

Head-to-toe summer readiness means you’ll need a bright pedicure, too. Corals, pinks, and oranges are to be expected during the summer, so why not stand out in a turquoisey teal? We’re in love with Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in “Nouvelle Vague” - and it’s equally as gorgeous on tips as it is on toes!
