W Hotels Inspires Us to Make Over the Bed

Rue La La: How do we go about making the perfect bed?
Nan: It just takes attention to detail. You need to always be thinking about the final picture. Does it need a bedskirt? To start with, you need really nice bedding, and a good iron. The more luxurious and beautiful the sheets, the better the bed.

Rue La La: We want to recreate this luxe look at home. Can you walk us through your process?
Nan: Okay, my process:
1.) When you buy bedding, make sure to wash it first.
2.) Use a down insert, or a down substitute. Do not skimp on the pillows.
3.) You’ll need a nice mattress pad cover that’s cushiony, breathes, and is soft.
4.) Iron the pillow cases and the duvet, and if you have extra time, the sheets.
5.) Make sure the inserts fit the shams and the pillows fit the pillowcases.

This summer, our favorite preppy pattern is making some serious headlines with a look that’s equal parts baguette-in-bicycle-basket Parisian and catamaran-in-waters-of-Newport nautical. Rue Stylist Evan works his magic by repurposing this once-casual number threefold: for a sidecar at the speakeasy, a presentation at the office, and a weekend whisk-away to the beach.

1. We believe in neon at night. When heading out on the town, a bold, bright top completely carries a look of basic black. Opt for strappy heels, cropped pants, and a dangling gold necklace to play off the top’s relaxed feel.

2. We believe lots of accessories can still look polished. The tailored blazer and sleek white denim perfectly tame the bright stripes, billowy scarf, and beachy wedges, making the ultimate office-to-drinks ensemble.

3. We believe high-contrast colors are easily wearable. Warm, saturated yellow is such an interesting and chic complement to the cool oceanic hue. Layered and effortless, this is the perfect day-at-the-yacht-club look.

P.S. – A styling tip: When mixing any patterns, select prints in different sizes to keep it chic.

RUE LA LA STYLIST MAUREEN GIVES MEMBERS SPRING-WORTHY SOLUTIONS

Now that winter’s run its course, we’re busy getting prepped for warmer weather (an animal of its own). We asked our lovely Facebook Fans to post their most pressing questions. And one of our Rue stylists, Maureen, has all the answers when it comes to dressing for the season.

Q: What’s the one must-have outfit piece this spring? – Caitlin O.
A: Invest in a dress that can go from day to night. Try the new longer length to pair with flats in the daytime and high wedge espadrilles at night. For day, throw on a woven leather belt and a light cardigan or jean jacket. For night, go for drippy rhinestones to up the glitz.

Q: What’s the rule on nail polish color this season? Toes only? Fingers only? Matching toes & fingers? – Shawn F.
A: We love mixing up fingers and toes, but we try to keep the colors in the same family. Spring for a coral on your fingers and a hot pink on your toes, or try a ballet slipper pink paired with cherry red.

Q. How can I look fun and flirty but not silly at age 40? – Julie C.
A. Just because you’re 40 doesn’t mean you can’t be cute and flirty! But when you reach a certain age, some of the sexier trends can look like you’re trying too hard, so err on the side of caution when dipping into trends like leopard or leather shorts. Why not try a fitted, skinny cigarette pant paired with a pretty, tucked-in blouse? That look can be very flirty yet sophisticated. Or, try a rich jewel-tone feminine skirt with a cashmere top. And heels always add a touch of fun and confidence to any outfit.

Lingerie
The trick to mastering lingerie pieces is making it look like you’re not wearing a nightie in public. A couple of easy options: Wear a lacy camisole top under a blazer, or try a slip dress with opaque tights and a chunky sweater.
