Rue Horoscopes: May

Get a glimpse into your stylish future – minus the crystal ball

horoscopes

We may not be experts in astrology or the moon’s position, but we do know style alignment. And in forecasting the next month, here’s what’s in store for you.

Taurus
Big changes are on the horizon. Translation? Your shoe collection is about to get a major overhaul. Toss those worn-in sandals from last year (along with the excuses) and restock with one pair for every spring trend – bold stripes and ankle straps included.

Gemini
Quit being apprehensive about rocking a cutout one-piece at the beach this season and take the plunge. Not only will you set the crazy-stylish tone among your own posse, you’ll take the entire ocean by storm.

Cancer
The quickest way to make some changes? Step out of that comfort-zone hibernation and into a refreshingly new experience (three-day-long spa retreats totally count).

Leo
Don’t be thrown by recent drama. Instead, surround yourself with things that make you incandescently happy, like brand new strappy wedges, those first few drinks on a patio, and froyo. Lots of froyo.

Virgo
If there’s one thing you can count on for spring, it’s (what feels like) a completely new wardrobe. And with certainty comes the ability to plan. Puerto Rico, here you come – umbrella-clad cocktails are calling.

Libra
There’s a secret behind that silver lining everyone’s been talking about (girl-crush Jennifer Lawrence not included). It comes in the form of metallic, buttery leather accessories. Feeling more positive yet?

Rue Horoscopes: April

Get a glimpse into your stylish future – minus the crystal ball

horoscopes

We may not be experts in astrology or the moon’s position, but we do know style alignment. And in forecasting the next month, here’s what’s in store for you.

Aries
The whole world may seem like it’s against you right now – your size sold out in two minutes flat again?! – but don’t freak out. Here’s a fix: Set better reminders, block out time on your calendar (you have a VERY important meeting at 11AM), and click faster than you’ve ever clicked before.

Taurus
You have strong beliefs, especially when it comes to wardrobe rules about transitioning from cold temps to bring-on-the-beach weather. The first cardinal rule for April? Break out the white pants, immediately.

Gemini
Life is all about negotiations – you know that better than anyone. You bartered for that statement-making tapestry in the living room and your wardrobe is the result of some very quick thinking at a sample sale. Now, it’s time for you to talk your way to a higher credit limit.

Cancer
If you’re looking for some clarity (and let’s be serious, who isn’t?), there are a few simple steps you can take to turn your home into the best place for clear thinking. Step 1: Put out a vase with an odd number of bamboo stalks. Step 2: Clear the clutter – all of it. Step 3: Keep color palettes neutral.

The Anatomy of the Classic Trench

Slowly warming temps tell us it’s time to start peeling off the layers, and there’s no better transitional tool than your go-to trench. With a ladylike silhouette and versatility that demands you own one in at least three colors, this timeless piece of outerwear is synonymous with spring. But how did it earn such a coveted reputation? Aside from its historical war experience (the coat was first worn in the 1820s in the military trenches – get it? Trench. Coat?), this garment’s popularity comes from its flattering bodywork:

Rue Horoscopes: March

Get a glimpse into your stylish future – minus the crystal ball

horoscopes

We may not be experts in astrology or the moon’s position, but we do know style alignment. And in forecasting the next month, here’s what’s in store for you.

Pisces
You know that overload of compassion you’re feeling to help pretty much everyone? Use it as inspiration for your looming closet clean-out and donate more than usual… and then rapidly replace those items with some printed skinnies and a silk blouse.

Aries
There are few things better than feeling totally independent – and no one knows this better than you. Example A: You saw that wrap dress. You wanted that wrap dress. You hit Quick! Buy It. Independence rules.

Taurus
Spring has a tendency to be exhausting – between achieving New Year’s resolutions, saying goodbye to winter, and that annual cleaning, who could blame you. Just don’t forget to take a breather. Especially if it’s in the form of a very long bubble bath.

Gemini
Sometimes it’s hard to balance those more fun items on your social calendar with your less-than-favorable obligations (patio party or project proposal?). On second thought, forget the balancing act – springtime is synonymous with party time.

Cancer
If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that expression is all about being in the moment. And this moment is calling for (lots of) animal prints and a seriously bold crimson lip.

The Fitting Room: Best Prints for Your Body Type

How to wear patterns that complement your curves

When it comes to wearing prints, it’s all about what catches the eye first. It’s important to know where to place them in order to accentuate your best features and disguise those trouble areas. As an overall guideline, place printed items on areas that deserve a little extra attention.

First things first – identify your body type. We come in all shapes and sizes, but rest assured – so do prints.

BLG-1314 Fitting Room- Prints for Body Type3

Petite
Height isn’t on your side, so make friends with vertical stripes that will lengthen your silhouette. If you’re not into stripes, keep in mind that patterns with elements larger than your fist will overpower your petite frame.

Long and Lean
Exercise your right to pull off large and bold prints. Monotonous prints will make you appear a little lanky, but a bold print will draw the eye toward the torso and away from limbs.

Pear Shape
This one’s a given: draw the eye upward by wearing a busy print on top. Play around with colors and wear that flattering floral blouse – over and over again.

Fuller Bust
The pear shape’s alter ego. Reverse the advice and choose a printed skirt or pant to offset a top-heavy appearance. Lucky for you, printed bottoms are a hot trend for spring 2013.

Rue Road Test: 3 Shoe Trends to Try

Start from the bottom up with these flashy footwear fads

photo

It’s easy to settle into a shoe rut at this time of year – when wool socks feel like a must-have accessory and the snow banks only seem to be growing higher – but a weekend trip to NYC gave me the perfect excuse to kick off my boots and try some of the hottest shoe trends of the season.

Sneaker wedges: I really wasn’t sold on the concept of heeled sneakers (even after Beyoncé rocked them in the Love on Top video) – until I tried them on. Not only are they super comfortable and easy to walk in, they look effortlessly cool with both pants or bare legs. I wore these black suede lace-ups with an oversized camouflage jacket, tights, and a black minidress for a low-key night out.

Spiked pumps: These nude spiked pumps are definitely not for the faint of heart. I love them because they’re a bit more subtle and easier to pull off in the office than their metallic counterparts, but are still on-trend. If you haven’t completely warmed up to the look, try a style with a cap-toe or spiked heel.

Pop of color: These turquoise suede platform pumps are perfect for achieving a head-to-toe colorblocked look. I paired these puppies with another bright on top – try coral or fuchsia – and had all eyes on me.

Rue Horoscopes: February

Get a glimpse into your stylish future – minus the crystal ball

horoscopes

We may not be experts in astrology or the moon’s position, but we do know style alignment. And in forecasting the next month, here’s what’s in store for you.

Aquarius
What’s life without a little mystery? This month, experiment with wearing sultry underpinnings beneath your everyday uniform and revel in knowing something the world doesn’t – and in the extra boost of confidence that inevitably follows.

Pisces
Spring is in the air (well, according to Punxsutawney Phil), so that means it’s time to start thinking Pantone® colors, eye-catching prints, and everything lace (just don’t take the plunge until the snow clears).

Aries
Warmer days are looming (and so is a packed social calendar). The best plan of attack? Start shopping the sale racks for winter steals and the fresh spring collections for a personally curated look that transitions without missing a beat – or a credit card payment.

Taurus
Last spring was all about pleats and peplum, but this year? Quit playing it safe and go for a more daring trend (crop top, anyone?) – you might like what you discover.

Gemini
The last-minute party invite: we all secretly love the drama, but how to get event-ready? Touch up your makeup with whatever’s on hand (mascara can double as eyeliner), let your hair down (literally, then give it a tousle, too), and get ready to schmooze.

Cancer
Counteract any wayward emotions this month with the secret recipe that cures all: one venting session, two new statement necklaces (two-for-one deals totally count), and a batch of these three-ingredient brownies that are mostly Nutella. Repeat as needed.

Rue Horoscopes: January

Get a glimpse into your stylish future – minus the crystal ball

horoscopes

We may not be experts in astrology or the moon’s position, but we do know style alignment. And in forecasting the next month, here’s what’s in store for you.

Capricorn
Yes. Finally. The holiday scramble of entertaining, dressing up, buying gifts (and more gifts), and dealing with family drama is over. What to do with that high-strung energy that’s still lingering? Put it to good use and revamp your now tired-looking home base. Give your living room new life with some colorful drapes and a set of artful panel paintings or fall in love with your master bedroom all over again with a new geometric-design rug and too-cute-to-be-true throw pillows.

Aquarius
Here’s a shocker: Those days where you had a fallback plan (okay, also known as mom and dad) are long gone. But the next best thing is as simple as making a budget that’s realistic to stick to. For example, make sure to allot enough cash to cover the everyday bills, then put the rest toward a worthwhile investment. Like, say, a matching vintage Chanel tweed skirt suit. Smart spending never looked so good.

Pisces
Post-holiday time can be seriously depressing – as proved by your newly discovered need to eat every last gingerbread man within arm’s reach. But don’t worry, there’s a cure. Drop the cookie and write down all the things you want to accomplish with a fresh year ahead of you (think big and small), then close your eyes and pick one. If your hand gravitates toward the “revamp look with a whole new wardrobe,” so be it.

Aries
Now is not the time to be stubborn. So instead of sticking to your guns this month, open your mind up to the possibilities of the New Year. Collaborate with new groups at work. Step out of the skirt-and-blazer routine and don an animal print blouse (bonus points for bright colors). Not doing it for you? Stick to topics like celebrity gossip to avoid conflicts.

Taurus
There’s something about this time of year that makes people uptight (blame it on the sugar-cookie overload). But not you. You’re as cool and polished as ever – and you’ve got the always-pressed silky blouse, sleek patent pumps, and gleaming baubles to prove it. Use this situation to your advantage and make an impression on those people that normally intimidate you, like that intriguing stranger across the bar or your boss’s boss.

Gemini
You know those days when you feel just a bit more brilliant than usual? You’re about to have a whole month of it. And that means you’ll need a power wardrobe as bold as you are. Keep your skinnies for the weekends and rock a flattering flare leg (but don’t go too flared) with a tucked floral blouse, perfectly tailored blazer, and a tamed mane for just the right balance of timeless style and don’t-mess-with-me authority.
