That first sandal pick of the season is always a little heart-fluttery. You think about all the places you’ll go in said sandals, or, perhaps more accurately, all the patios you’ll sip muddled craft cocktails on, sandal-clad…

But then reality sets in: blisters. So today, we’re talking blister prevention – a.k.a. how to break in that cute new pair of leather sandals you just scored at 11AM. After plenty of research, I stumbled on this little gem of a tip from Real Simple, which I’ve come to call “The Sandal Plunge.” Read on, try it for yourself, and take the season by storm.

Late March: It’s still a little bit chilly, but the winds are perfect for sailing. These loafers have the preppy look down pat. Just pair with dark skinnies – cuff ‘em if the temps permit – and an oversized sweater. (Like I said, there will be winds.)

Early April: Now we’re getting there! (There being that warm beacon of light at the end of winter.) To celebrate picnic season, head out in these sunny yellow flats (baring just a hint of toe – it’s spring, after all) paired with capris and a light tunic.

Mid-April: If there’s one event that exemplifies why warm weather is the best, it’s the return of alfresco dining – more specifically, alfresco brunch. There is simply nothing like lounging around in the sun while enjoying a delicious meal (and maybe a mimosa). These bright leather sandals, paired with a flowy maxi, just scream lazy Sunday – in the best way imaginable.

Late April: Wedding season is beginning and, unfortunately, sandals just won’t do. Nude pumps (spiced up with some crocodile embossing) are neutral enough for any hue, but a welcome change from those classic black heels. Wear them with anything. Seriously. Anything.

Early May: The long-awaited rooftop party is finally back. So go ahead and rock some wedges with a girly-girl dress (may I suggest a fit and flare number?).

Late May: Yes. The long-awaited summer kickoff – the Memorial Day BBQ – has arrived. Finally! And sunshine calls for sandals. This knotted fabric variety, worn with some denim cutoffs and a simple tank, is perfect for a laid-back, sunny afternoon fiesta. Then? It’s on to the main event: summer.
