Met Gala Instagrams
Each year, we wait patiently for fashion’s annual Met Gala. And each year our Instagram feed is hit with an onslaught of behind-the-scenes pics. So why the shortage of star-studded grams from last night’s ball? The event, overseen by Anna Wintour, was a social media–free zone for the first time ever, thanks to a newly enforced cell phone–photography ban.

The goal of the new regulation was to help ensure the security and enjoyment of the many A-listers in attendance. And while keeping the mystery alive is a concept we can definitely get behind, we did miss the usual flood of Insta-updates. Remember Cara Delevingne’s video of a tipsy Reese Witherspoon and Zooey Deschanel last year? Sequel, please!

Thankfully, there were plenty of pre- and post-party pics to make us feel like we were almost there. The usual suspects (ahem, Kim K.) were all about sharing, but even Instagram-newbie Marc Jacobs got in on a little selfie action. And if he can change his tune toward social media, maybe by next year Anna can, too. Fingers crossed.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be BFFs with Rihanna, the next best thing is here – she’s on Snapchat.

Rihanna on Snapchat

Posting from the username “Rihanna,” the self-proclaimed bad gal is giving us a behind-the-scenes look at her life. But don’t expect carefully posed glamour shots or editorial sneak peeks, like on her Instagram. This is a glimpse of the real Rihanna, or “Rob” (short for her first name Robyn), as her snap-featured friends often call her. Sure, it’s hard to forget she’s a celebrity when she posts videos of Katy Perry kicking it VIP at Coachella. But we kind of love knowing even Rihanna has to kill bugs in hotel rooms and shop at convenience stores.

Other celebs, like Kendall Jenner and Ryan Seacrest, were early adopters of the oh-so-addicting social media platform. However, Rihanna appears to be crushing the competition – per usual.

Prince William, Princess Kate, and Prince Harry have finally joined the (Twitter) party. The trio’s handle, @KensingtonRoyal, has accumulated tens of thousands of followers in just one day of existence. And as if that weren’t enough? The family shocked the world again, signing up for Instagram.

What do the nobles plan to share? Their collective bio reads: “Updates, pictures, and videos from Kensington Palace about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, and their Royal Foundation.”

Of course, we’re hoping there’s a #selfie up someone’s sleeve.

That’s right. Rihanna has returned to Instagram after a six-month ban from the platform (punishment for a few NSFW pics).

Her first celebratory images included a peek at her cowabunga-worthy Halloween costume. Yep, RiRi and her friends painted themselves green as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Welcome back, @badgalriri. And keep those snaps coming.

Yesterday, Instagram launched a standalone app that will put your existing video uploads to shame. Called Hyperlapse, it lets users record time-lapse video from their iPhone®, accelerating footage anywhere from two to twelve times the normal speed. And it didn’t take long for the fashion set to realize it’ll be a handy New York Fashion Week Tool.

In April, Marc Jacobs set out to find new models via Twitter. And yesterday, the nine (beyond-lucky) winners were revealed in his Fall 2014 campaign. The shots are bold, energetic, and beautiful, but warning: they will induce major jealousy. For all of us non-winners? I say we hold a virtual rain dance in hopes of more social media casting calls in the future.

@Badgalriri’s #1 fan? Tom Ford – which is surprising, considering this is the same designer who used to ban cell phones from his super-exclusive runway shows.

But apparently, Gucci’s former leading man is starting to recognize the importance of social media in the fashion world. In an interview with, Tom claimed that celebrity Instagrams are now more important than media of the past. Said Tom:

Customers don’t care anymore about reviews or hard-copy publications. They care what picture Rihanna just Instagrammed while she’s naked in bed, what new shoes she has on, how she’s talking about them. That’s what they respond to.

Is he on to something? Only time will tell. But the real question here is whether Tom’s fandom is enough to make RiRi resurrect her Instagram. Because I for one miss her antics. (But could do without the bed shots.)

Right now, our Fashion Director, Jackie Nasser, and her (very lucky) team are at New York Fashion Week taking notes on all the latest runway trends. Back at the Boston offices, the rest of us are getting our NYFW fix via Livestream and Pinterest. Thank goodness for social media.

1. Shout-out to Paris, because we wouldn’t have NYFW otherwise.

2. Like it or not, fashion is all about picking favorites.

3. After all the time spent creating their collections, these designers more than deserve a bow at curtain call.

4. Fact: There’s always just as much style outside the tents as there is inside on the runways.

5. If Anna Wintour doesn’t show up, is it even NYFW?

Can’t get enough Pinterest inspiration? Check out past boards that caught our eye.

Mom Style

We’ll cut right to the chase: we’d be lost without our moms. Not to mention our aunts, sisters, grandmothers, and all the other women out there who have paved the way to great style by making sure we didn’t leave the house sporting a pair of flannel PJ pants.

So this Mother’s Day, we’ve figured out the best way to say thanks: by proving to the world that her style’s unrivaled.

Send us a photo of your mom’s impeccable style or tweet us her best fashion advice to put her name in lights – or at least the chance to appear on our login page or social media channels. You can submit your photos and advice via Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag #momstyle.

We have a feeling this is one Mother’s Day gift she won’t soon forget.

@ManRepeller: Give me plaid pants or give me death
Now this sounds serious.

@The_Meek: Gmail is back. One day I’ll tell my grandkids how I didn’t have email access for about 4 minutes.
And how, as a result, the entire interwebs almost shut down in fear.

@elementstyle: I am so loving Anne Hathaway’s pixie. Wish I had the balls (and bone structure).
Ditto. What we don’t wish for, though? Her extreme diet for Les Miz.

@katiearmour: true friends text you photos of @RyanGosling when you’re having a bad day
Better friends send you YouTube links of his best movies to watch at work.

@RebelWilson: I am going to go on a new cleanse – my weekend cleanse of cutting everything out of my diet except for chocolate DID NOT WORK! …
Maybe that’s where we went wrong, too…
