Come February 6, athletes from all over the world will descend upon Sochi, Russia, to compete in the 2014 Winter Games. And I, like millions of other viewers, will be riveted to the TV screen watching skiing, figure skating, curling, and more. If history is any indication, I’ll also be shedding a tear or two when I get overwhelmed by the incredible triumphs that are playing out before me. But there’s still a few days to go – so to hold us all over until then, here are five things you may not know about the Winter Games this year.

We already knew collaborations were big this year. And it seems there’s one more to take note of before 2013 is over – Cynthia Rowley and Lindsey Vonn. Yes, you heard that right.

The gold-medal skier and CFDA-winning fashion designer have partnered up to create four custom helmets for Lindsey’s run in the 2014 Winter Olympics. And it gets better. Fans can vote on Lindsey’s Facebook page to help decide which one she’ll actually wear during the games in Sochi. Honestly, I say she picks them all and tries to make helmets the new must-have accessory for 2014. Yeah, they’re that nice.

I’ll admit it. In the mornings, I opt for the escalator over the stairs (unless I’m feeling really ambitious, but in high heels, that’s a rarity). For a free subway ride, however, I might just reconsider – which is exactly what Moscow officials are hoping Russian commuters will do this winter.

Moscow Metro Train Arriving

In preparation for the upcoming Sochi 2014 games, a Moscow subway station has installed a squat-driven kiosk that issues a free ticket for any passenger who can perform 30 squats in two minutes.
