Yes, You Can: Layer Your Outerwear

With New England’s will-they-ever-end winters, I refuse to stay bundled in my heaviest furs, woolies, and puffer coats for possibly four months of frigidity. To both remedy the freezing temps and stick to my refusal to reach for my down parka until January, I rely on one simple trick: the vest layer.

From leather to fur, vests have been running rampant on the sartorial radars of editors and bloggers for seasons now. Finally choosing to toss one over my coat might have been the best decision I’ve made as of late (no judgment).  Why didn’t I try this sooner?

For those who live in warm climates (I’m increasingly jealous of you), a vest layered over a medium-weight jacket is ideal for mild winters too.

Convinced yet? Here are a few things to think about (or not) when adding a vest to your winter outerwear repertoire. Continue reading “Yes, You Can: Layer Your Outerwear” »

In Good Fashion: Hurricane Sandy & Rue

There’s no denying we have one of the greatest Member bases a company could ever ask for. So when trying to figure out the best way that Rue could contribute to the Hurricane Sandy relief effort, calling upon our amazing Members – you – was a no-brainer.

As our CEO, Ben Fischman, explained in an email that went out this past Monday, help is just a click away.

“We want to invite you, and all of our Members, to join this effort. It is our hope that many of you will donate $10 (or more if you like) to the American Red Cross 2012 Hurricane Fund. And just as we’re doing for our own Rue team, donate here, and we will match your donation.*”

*Rue La La’s total donation capped at $75,000 now through November 12, 2012.

November is Holiday Prep Month! (Get Excited)

While December may reign as the month of holiday cheer, much of it wouldn’t be possible without its supporting act, November – the ultimate month of festivity prep.

In the name of said prep, here’s a list of what exactly Rue has to offer this month that’ll cater to your holiday needs – be it entertaining, gifting, or finally replacing those sheets on the guest bed.

24 Hours of Today’s Fix. Yes, you read that right, and yes, we’re talking about that Today’s Fix. From 8PM Thanksgiving Day (November 22) through 8PM Black Friday (November 23), a new Today’s Fix will launch every hour, on the hour. The twist? The most coveted items (“it” bags included) will go live at the oddest of hours. (If you happen to be standing in a checkout line before sunup, though, and your phone bears the Rue La La app, perhaps those hours will be the best of hours.)

Get Gifty: Our Holiday Gift Shop. While this one was introduced a few days ago, a refresher never hurts. Think of it as your one-stop gift-getting destination, open 24/7, all holiday season long – and with every last member of your gift list in mind.

12 Days of Merry. As in, “My true love gave to me…” indeed. While partridges in pear trees won’t be found in these Boutiques (blame transportation logistics), holiday décor musts – think ornaments, wreaths, gourmet goodies, and more – most certainly will be. The event kicks off Saturday, November 10, at 11AM ET, and will continue for 12 whole days (just as the carol instructs, of course).

In Good Fashion: Hurricane Sandy Relief

While Hurricane Sandy’s come and gone (for the most part, at least), the storm’s impact was – and continues to be – felt by millions. We’ve all see the flood footage in New York, New Jersey, and beyond – clearly, there’s a huge need for help.

Looking to do your part in providing relief? Check out these opportunities:

Tonight, at 8PM ET, NBC will be airing a telethon in the name of Hurricane victims. Slated to perform? Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, and Christina Aguilera, to name a few. Be sure to check it out – and donate. (All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross.)

United Way has set up a donation fund to “address the near-term and long-term recovery needs of individuals, families and communities along the Eastern Seaboard that were impacted by Hurricane Sandy’s devastation”. Donations can be made here.

Feed The Children continues to dispatch truckloads of disaster-relief supplies, food, toiletries, clean water, and more to areas in need. Help get as many trucks on the road as possible by donating here.

Habitat for Humanity has taken action by assisting in home re-builds. To contribute to this initiative financially, call their Partner Service Center at 1-800-HABITAT (422-4828), then press “0″, to provide a representative with your information over the phone.

To aid in providing medical assistance and supplies, donate to Americares here.

Check out Hope for New York for a continually updated list of specific spots in need – all in the New York City area.

Eager to lend a hand? Volunteer organizations abound. Check out opportunities within the American Red Cross, Team RubiconNational Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster,  The Corporation for National and Community Service, and The Humane Society of the United States (to name a few). For a list of emergency shelters in the New York City area, click here.

And, of course, it’s critical to be sure that your contributed dollars are actually making it to the right place. The Huffington Post suggests keeping these tips in mind as you look to donate.

Most Wanted: A Peek At This Week’s Boutiques

From getting a headstart on sweets season to embracing the ultimate rubber clog, here’s a look at all the lovely things I’ll be snapping up off of Rue this week.

1) Seiko watch. Sure, this is a men’s watch. But the way an oversized gold ticker nestles into the rest of the bracelet party is, simply put, irresistible. Our SEIKO Men Boutique opens Sunday, October 28 at 11AM ET.

2) French Sole New York flat. My beloved black skimmers? They’re sporting holes in their respective toes as we speak. The quest for a replacement has been a long and desperate road, but I’m more than confident that this ballet flat czar has it finally coming to an end. Our French Sole New York Boutique opens Tuesday, October 30, at 11AM ET.

3) Brooklyn Cheesecake treats. The season of indulgence is rapidly approaching (YES), so I may as well start conditioning for it. Our Brooklyn Cheesecake & Bittersweet Pastries Boutique opens Wednesday, October 31, at 11AM ET.

4) W.H. Petronela clutch. There’s no two ways about it – I absolutely have to wean myself off lugging an extra-large purse (in which I can stash my shoes and jacket) to parties. Hitting people with it gets awkward, and dancing just isn’t the same. With this killer clutch, though, my phone, ID, cash, and lip gloss are about to become all that I need. (Let the party resume.) Our W.H. Petronela Boutique opens Monday, October 29, at 11AM ET.

5) Crocs clogs. If a shoe is navy, slip-on, waterproof, ankle-skinnifying, and weighs pretty much nothing, guess what – I’ll always have a soft spot for it. Our Crocs Men Boutique opens Wednesday, October 31, at 11AM ET.

Spotlight On: Dresses for Every Occasion

For all the season’s highly anticipated (or soon-to-be-planned) occasions, these are the classy, flirty, and fancy dresses I simply can’t say no to.

Dream Job
Looking to stand out in an interview? Skip the scented résumé and opt for this classic pencil dress with a jewel neckline. It’s a silhouette they’ll expect in a color they’ll never forget.

Date Night
The perfect balance between modesty and mystery – this fun, flirty number brings attention to your waist and legs without showing too much skin.

LPD
Every season calls for the ever-versatile LPD (little print dress). This modern update on the polka dot is both work- and party-appropriate.

Girls’ Night
There are some looks that only our girlfriends can truly appreciate. With shoulder-to-hem ruffles and double buttons on the cuffs (this isn’t your average shirtdress), just wait for the all-approving jaws to drop.

Black Tie
First: find the perfect dress. Second: find the perfect occasion. This is the kind of floor-length gown we plan parties around.

Find these dresses (and more!) at our One-Piece Wonders: Dresses for Every Occasion Boutique, opening Tuesday, October 23 at 11AM ET.

Most Wanted: A Peek at This Week’s Boutiques

From the perfect deco bookends to bringing a Facebook mobile upload to life, here’s a look at all the lovely things I’ll be snapping up off of Rue this week.

Clockwise, from top left:

V&M bookends. I can’t even imagine the overwhelming joy these collectors must have experienced upon finding two such deliciously deco bookends. Nor can I imagine the sweet sorrow that was parting with them. But, rest assured – they’re coming to a good home (er, miniature apartment). I promise.  Our V&M Art Deco Boutique opens Wednesday, October 17, at 11AM ET.

Cole Haan cape. Not only is this cape the perfect length for some good old-fashioned upper-thigh hiding, but its trim – yep, that most certainly is leather – has the “mixed-media” trend box checked for the season. Our Go-Everywhere Coats: Capes, Down Jackets, & More Boutique opens Tuesday, October 16, at 11AM ET.

Longchamp shopper. It’s long been known that these French totes are, well, the perfect totes. Not only do their stitched leather straps stay put on your shoulder, but they can carry huge amounts of work stuff and gym stuff, all at once. (Don’t ask me how.) Our Longchamp Boutique opens Sunday, October 14, at 11AM ET.

CanvasPop photo. Now, this is a cool concept. This company is willing to print my beloved (and, I’ll admit, filtered-to-flatter) iPhone® photos onto a piece of canvas AND stretch it around a frame. Those off-the-cuff mobile uploads? Hanging on the wall, they’re about to look a whole lot more legitimate. Our CanvasPop Boutique opens Tuesday, October 16, at 11AM ET.
