Preparing meal after meal. Welcoming the in-laws with open arms. Dusting. Let’s just say it: getting ready for the holidays is rough. But, lucky for you, we’re here to help. Like, really help.

You see, we joined up with our friends at LearnVest, Refinery29, and Food52 to create the Gear-Up for the Holidays Giveaway – a sweepstakes that gives you the opportunity to win over $1,500 worth of goods to get yourself and your home ready for the holidays. Makes having a house full of guests sound a little more appealing, doesn’t it? That’s what we thought.

Simply click here, put in your email address, and hit “enter.” Easy. When you win, feel free to invite us to dinner (it’s the least you can do).

It’s no secret: we’re kind of into blogs. Here, four Rue associates share their favorites.

“My morning go-to. The guy (Joe) who writes it gives great advice on dressing well without spending a ton of money. It’s nice to have someone else do all legwork around discovering new brands, sites, and sales.”
– Scott S., Director, New Ventures

Desire To Inspire
“This blog is run by two design-obsessed friends – one from Australia and one from Canada – who have never actually met. It’s the ultimate voyeur’s playground, plastered with big, beautiful interior and exterior photos of stunning homes all around the world.”
– Lindsay L., Editor

Cheetah is the New Black, Camille Styles, & oh joy!
“It’s a three-way tie. I love CNB’s style. Camille Styles’s recipes and home styling are great. And oh joy!’s daughter is too cute for words and a super-stylish little nugget.”
– Jessica R., Senior Digital Designer

seersucker + saddles
“This girl boldly mixes prints like nobody’s business. I regularly trawl her blog for style inspiration that’s just the right amount of preppy, edgy, and classic.”
– Chrissy M., Copywriter

Get the (cozy) lowdown on these covetable woven fibers. Then when the time comes to switch out those summer sheets, you’ll know just what to look for.

A plain-weave fabric (one thread over, one thread under), percale feels identical on either side and is both firm and smooth with no gloss. It is medium weight and has a thread count of 200 or higher. The tight weave allows for durability, so it can withstand washing and resist warping. The favored fiber for percale? Cotton – it’s breathable, cool, and crisp for warm or transitional months.

A fabric with a sateen weave has the luster and softness of satin, but is made from cotton instead of silk. The advantage? Sateen feels luxurious, without the price tag or laborious cleaning process of its sister fiber. Try it out when the temps drop. It’s breathable, but also insulating – warming with your body temperature faster than percale.

Our Sheets 101: Wrinkle-Resistant, Percale, & Sateen Boutique opens Monday, August 12, at 11AM ET.

Tomorrow’s the day (well, tonight at 2AM) we officially lose one hour of sleep. Womp womp. But there’s a silver lining that makes all things better. It makes flowers smell sweeter, lattes taste foamier, and it has also turned the UPS man into your new favorite person. It’s shopping – and we get a whole extra hour of it this Sunday on Rue. Rather than closing at 11AM ET, all Boutiques will remain open until 12PM ET to help ease the pain that can come from lack of sleep.

So, to make the most of this little gift, I’ll be snagging these stylish gems with that additional 60 minutes – and I suggest you do the same.

BLG-1323 Boutique Support - Daylight Savings

The Clothing Swap: It’s a fad that’s suddenly popping up everywhere. Friends gather, each bringing clothes to trade, and everyone walks away with something new – even if it is a little pre-loved.

Since we’re always looking for ways to pump up our wardrobes here at Rue La La, we decided to give it a try. (But we didn’t limit it to clothes – since we welcomed additional odds and ends, we called ours the “Stuff Swap.”)

Stuff Swap

While not as mobbed as our infamous sample sales, the Stuff Swap proved to be a success. The majority of the goods were clothing and accessories, but there were some hidden little gems, too. Where else can you find a The Muppet Show DVD set, kitchen canisters, and leopard print thank-you cards in the same place?

And the best part? In the end, everything that wasn’t nabbed by a Rue employee was packed up to be donated to Goodwill. Scoring new clothes and benefiting charity – what’s not to love?

We are all stylists of our own wardrobe, and the best of us know when to toss a has-been trend and when to hold on to items bound to make a comeback. The result: a well-equipped closet of quality pieces and styles that endure season after season. These picks from The Six: Wardrobe-Building Women’s Labels – in burgundy, leather, velvet, and gold – are surefire trends, but in timeless shapes that last.

Picture 2

Red Dress
This little number has the same versatility as an LBD, but with added have-to-have details. (If you love the cutout look, this is up your alley.) Throw this frock on for any can’t-get-out-of-bed Friday and transition (sans bathroom change) from desk to drinks.

Leather Mini
The leather skirt may be a then-and-again trend, but this straight shape is a classic, making this buttery number a long-term investment.

It’s just one of those things that can either go so right – or so wrong. If you’ve been holding off on this 80s throwback – just waiting for the perfect blend of sheen that’s not too gaudy, not too grade school – now’s your chance.

As memorable as Carrie’s leather studded belt and just as versatile. Cinch this stunner around a polished frock (ahem, like the little red dress), print dress, or even a winter puffer.

The Six: Wardrobe-Building Women’s Labels Boutique opens Friday, January 4, at 11AM ET.

Whatever the size or shape of a room, a rug can bring it to life – or result in a decorating disaster. You can change the furniture, paint the walls, and re-accessorize each season, but a rug seems to be the one thing that endures – which is why we roll them up once a year and start from scratch (the wine stains have nothing to do with it). So, before you make your decision, make sure it’s just right with this fail-safe size guide and a few helpful tips. Then, get shopping.

Assess your space
Furniture, floor, walls, room size – these are all things to consider before choosing a rug. For instance, bold, patterned rugs reduce the appearance of space, giving large rooms a cozy, inviting feel, while solid, light-color rugs make smaller rooms look brighter and more spacious.

Visualize the rug
With masking tape, create a border on the floor where you would like the rug to lie. Make sure the amount of bare floor between the rug and the furniture/walls is even to ensure balance.

Be realistic when it comes to your lifestyle
“Going green,” allergies, or small children? These are all things to consider. Additionally, a plush white carpet may look pristine and feel cozy underfoot, but when it comes to upkeep, it’s a bear. Find a middle point between aesthetics and easy maintenance. You’ll thank yourself later.
