In Honor of Veterans Day: The Army’s First Statue of a Female Soldier

I think Maya Angelou said it best: “How important it is for us to remember our heroes and she-roes.”

Today, we here at Rue pause to thank all of our veterans, men and women both, for their untiring dedication to our country.

Especially inspiring? The Army’s newest addition: a statue of a female solider, the first of its kind to be placed on a military base, unveiled last week in Fort Lee, Virginia.

In the words of The Daily Beast:

While the statue is a tribute to all women soldiers, it was designed to commemorate those who served in our most recent wars, a significant step by the U.S. Army to recognize and honor the part women play in military operations. The figure is dressed in modern combat equipment and carries a loaded M4 rifle…. It’s refreshing to finally see a public display showing the rifle and gear worn by a woman. A powerful tribute to the burden that women have carried in combat.

I’ll never fail to be amazed by how far we’ve come.

Matchmaking 101: Find Your Body’s Best Dress Shape

It’s amazing how good you feel when you find those pieces that flatter your every curve. Especially when it’s a dress that can take you from desk to dance floor with the addition of a few glittering extras. But which cuts are compatible with each shape? Here are three of the most common pairings:

Find Your Body's Best Dress Shape

A-Line
This is as universal as it gets. Nipping in at the waist and skimming loosely over the hips and thighs, this dress works on everyone, from pear-shaped to athletic body types.

Wrap
Sporting a flattering V-neck that draws the eye down, this classic style works well for fuller busts and hourglass shapes.

Empire
By accentuating the top half of the body just above the natural waist, this cut best flatters women with apple-shaped body types. Details around the neck also help to bring the focus up.

Our 10 Ways to Wear: The Little Black Dress Boutique opens Saturday, November 9, at 11AM ET.

Goof-Proof Gifting: Gift Receipts, the Rue Way

This holiday season, we wanted to make giving the Rue you love as easy as possible. Hence our new gift receipts. (They’re game changing.)

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS GOOF-PROOF GIFTING?
Give Rue. If your recipient for any reason doesn’t love their gift, they can return it for free. They don’t have to go through you first, and they don’t have to already be a Member.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
We’re putting a gift receipt inside every Rue box. Say you order a gift for your sister and have it shipped to yourself – you know, so you can wrap it up pretty and give it to her at your family party. All you have to do is write the SHIP ID from your Rue packing slip onto the gift receipt and enclose it with your gift. Your sister can then call the Concierge with the SHIP ID if she’d like to return it.

Want to send that Rue gift straight to your sister’s place (she does live halfway across the country, after all)? All she has to do is call our Concierge to make the return. It’s as easy as that!

NEED MORE GIFT RECEIPTS?
Print them here.

Sheets 101: The Facts Behind Two Fabrics, Unraveled

Get the (cozy) lowdown on these covetable woven fibers. Then when the time comes to switch out those summer sheets, you’ll know just what to look for.

081213_blogpost

Percale
A plain-weave fabric (one thread over, one thread under), percale feels identical on either side and is both firm and smooth with no gloss. It is medium weight and has a thread count of 200 or higher. The tight weave allows for durability, so it can withstand washing and resist warping. The favored fiber for percale? Cotton – it’s breathable, cool, and crisp for warm or transitional months.

Sateen
A fabric with a sateen weave has the luster and softness of satin, but is made from cotton instead of silk. The advantage? Sateen feels luxurious, without the price tag or laborious cleaning process of its sister fiber. Try it out when the temps drop. It’s breathable, but also insulating – warming with your body temperature faster than percale.

Our Sheets 101: Wrinkle-Resistant, Percale, & Sateen Boutique opens Monday, August 12, at 11AM ET.
