Sure, clothes are the big draw at New York Fashion Week (both in and out of the tents) – but without the right hair and makeup, a look just wouldn’t be complete. Take SKINGRAFT’s show, for example. The models’ minimalist makeup and wet, tousled hair really drove home the line’s edgy yet sporty aesthetic. To see how it all came together, I went backstage to talk to the artists behind the beauty.

The energy at Fashion Week is palpable. So much thought and creativity goes into each aspect – and there’s no exception for the hairstyles that hit the runways. I was able to get a backstage view of the prep at Korto Momolu‘s show. A designer and Project Runway alum, Momolu’s concept was all about good and evil. And the hair for the show? It was also a combination of sweet and spicy. The highly perched fishtail braid was an unexpected, edgy twist on a girlhood favorite.

Of course, we love to see the meticulously coiffed and styled model that comes down the runway, but it’s always inspiring to watch what takes place before the music starts and the lights come on.

So, on Saturday afternoon, I headed backstage at the Christian Siriano show held at Eyebeam on West 21st Street in New York. There I met Anthony Cole of Sebastian Professional, who told me about his inspiration for the show’s signature hairstyle – a soft and natural, yet voluminous, ponytail.
