Last night marked the 87th ceremony of the Academy Awards. And for fashion lovers, the fiercest competition was on the red carpet. While Birdman may have taken home the Best Picture title, these five starlets shared the crown for Best Dressed.

Last night the music industry convened in Los Angeles for the 57th annual GRAMMY Awards, and as always, pop stars showed up in their best high-fashion wears. While icons like Madonna, AC/DC, and Beyoncé took the stage and newcomers (ahem, Sam Smith) walked away with trophies, it was these four women who stunned on the red carpet.

Grammy Awards Best DressedRihanna
A frequent risk taker, Rihanna stole the show in her layered Giambattista Valli number. It’s the pretty-in-pink princess gown you can only wear once in a lifetime, and she went for it. Her simple hair and makeup were key to making it work.

Ciara
Ciara’s beautifully ruffled Alexandre Vauthier dress hit all the right notes. A dramatic train was complemented by an asymmetrical one-shoulder neckline and leg slit. It’s official: glamour was alive and well at the GRAMMYs.

Gwen Stefani
Never one to do the expected, Gwen chose an Atelier Versace jumpsuit that was chic, cool, and most of all, rock ‘n’ roll. The subtle pop of red on her nails? A perfect finishing touch for the look.

Taylor Swift
Taylor’s ombre Elie Saab dress had an upbeat, mermaid-inspired vibe. More importantly, a high-low hemline revealed contrast jewel-toned heels that kept the ensemble from being too matchy-matchy.

It’s officially that time of year again: awards season. And the red carpet at last night’s Golden Globes ceremony didn’t disappoint.

With small-screen actors and major movie stars mingling together – Jennifer Aniston, Amy Adams, and Kerry Washington among them – the big fashion trends were asymmetrical tops, sheer paneling, and sequins. But it was the celebrites who went outside the box and opted for something completely unexpected that caught my attention most. Here are five contenders for the night’s Best Dressed title.

Fans of E! mainstay Fashion Police have lamented the loss of beloved host and comedian Joan Rivers since earlier this fall. But a few months ago, viewers were excited to hear that the network is going to bring back the show, just in time to praise (or put down) celebrity red-carpet looks at the Golden Globes.

Kathy Griffin will take Joan’s seat, and now, it’s been announced that style guru Brad Goreski will also join Fashion Police when it returns on January 12. Though his Bravo show It’s a Brad, Brad World was canceled last year, we have high hopes that his tenure on E! will be a long one.

Last night, the biggest stars of television partied in Los Angeles for the Emmys. Red was definitely the color of the night, with Claire Danes, January Jones, and Christina Hendricks all choosing the striking shade.

On stage, there were hilarious presenters (check out Jimmy Kimmel’s roasting of Matthew McConaughey here), a surprising kiss between Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston, and a Breaking Bad sweep. But the real winners of the night were on the red carpet. See who made my top-five list below.

Gone are the days when gowns were the only red-carpet option for women. Sure, we still have Cate Blanchett’s impeccable head-to-toe nude and Lupita’s plunging baby blue. But last night’s awards also saw a sea of tuxes.

The designer of choice? Saint Laurent. Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres wore three different Saint Laurent tuxes. Ellen Page looked edgy and cool dressed in the brand, too. As did Kourtney Kardashian. (Saint Laurent outfitted white-hot Jared Leto as well.)

Of course, Yves Saint Laurent has been a red-carpet staple for years, dressing the likes of Diane Kruger in glamorous gowns. But under the helm of Hedi Slimane, the brand is far more casual.

What would that mean for the women of this year’s red carpet, the public wondered? Thanks to Fashionista, the answer is now clear: suits. “Saint Laurent has become the definitive source for cool-yet-elegant, well-tailored suiting.”

Sounds like awards shows just got a whole lot more comfortable.
