A new season means a new color palette. So, we asked Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, for some expert advice. Here, she gives us a rundown of summer’s must-have hues and color combos.

Pantone's Tips for Picking & Pairing Summer's Must-Have Hues

  1. Greys have been big the past few seasons. Opt for shades like Paloma – over black – for your go-to neutral this summer and fall.
  2. This season calls for a little excitement. Wear two equally bold hues, like Cayenne and Orange Freesia, for an unexpected pairing reminiscent of summer’s bright blooms.
  3. Radiant Orchid – Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year – is more versatile than people think. Try it in small doses first with accessories or makeup, as it’s a very skin-enhancing color.

No one knows color like Pantone. So we’re obviously banking on its spring color picks to fill our closet.

1. Radiant Orchid was named 2014 Color of the Year, but we have a feeling we’ll be wearing it straight through 2015.

2. Forget a pop of yellow. Freesia is worth wearing all over.

3. Celosia Orange–hued lipstick? It’s at the top of our makeup must-have list.

4. We’re adding some flavor to our wardrobe with a little Cayenne this season.

5. Heels. Dresses. Jackets. We’ll take them all in Dazzling Blue, please.

The experts at Pantone have spoken: Radiant Orchid is 2014’s color of the year. A shade of purple with fuchsia and pink undertones, Pantone describes the color as a “surprisingly versatile shade” that can be worn by both men and women.

I know what you’re thinking – fuchsia for men? It’s a hard enough for women to wear without looking like Barbie. But before you shoot down Pantone’s prediction, just remember Emerald, 2013’s color of the year. It was everywhere. Which means you should probably prepare yourself for plenty of pinky-purple dresses, sofas, walls, and more. In fact, Radiant Orchid has already made it into Juicy Couture’s and Yoana Baraschi’s Spring 2014 collections. And you know what? I don’t hate it.
