Michelle Obama is on a mission to support American fashion – beyond just wearing her favorite labels. Proof? Yesterday, the always-elegant First Lady assembled a roster of big-name designers and 150 design students at the White House for a series of workshops, panels, and networking events.

The goal of the occasion – associated with her Reach Higher initiative – was to open doors for emerging talent from the Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons, and more. Michelle even sported one of the student designs: a racerback blue dress by FIT’s Natalya Koval.

Along with exposing the students to the expertise of Zac Posen, Prabal Gurung, and Lela Rose, FLOTUS shared a patriotic success story. Citing SPANX founder Sara Blakely’s growth into a billionaire entrepreneur, Michelle reminded the designers that hard work remains at the core of the fashion business. Sara took jobs at Disney World and in fax-machine sales to save the money she needed for her first SPANX product. And that’s right about when Michelle declared that, “We all wear them with pride.”

So there you have it: FLOTUS is as big a fan of SPANX as you are.

It’s no secret that Michelle Obama has some stylish friends in her address book. And now, the First Lady is summoning her favorite American designers and industry bigwigs for a “Celebration of Design” event.

Last week, invitations were sent out for the October 8 reception. But the real question is: Who is on the guest list? So far, Maria Cornejo and executives from Jimmy Choo and Talbots are to be expected. As far as others, I have some guesses. Maybe Carolina Herrera? Jason Wu? And of course, the ever-attainable J.Crew.

Yes, her husband received some flack for that tan suit a few weeks ago. Perhaps he can run that controversial outfit by a house full of fashion experts next month.

We’ve all heard it before: First impressions matter. And guess what? Your hairstyle plays a big part in those initial make-or-break 30 seconds. If you’re looking for a haircut that screams, “I’m the girl for the job,” opting for a short bob – also known as the “Power Bob” – might be your best bet.

Every year, big-name stars attend the Met Gala – but this time, the turnout is projected to be beyond A-list. According to WWD, First Lady (and two-time Vogue cover star) Michelle Obama will cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony of the Met’s new fashion wing, The Anna Wintour Costume Center. And just like that, my anticipation for the Met Gala skyrocketed.

Michelle Obama to Open Anna Wintour Costume Center

I mean, sure, I was already excited for the white-tie dress code and the Charles James exhibition. But this? This is bigger than big. And in addition to cutting the ribbon, the First Lady will also be speaking at the morning’s ceremony. So a stunning day dress is definitely going to happen. My bet is on something black and white, especially after she went monochromatic on a recent trip to China.

Now, it’s not certain if she will attend the evening Gala (bummer), but regardless, this is one FLOTUS sighting you won’t want to miss.

Head over to WWD for more on Michelle Obama’s Met appearance.

Today, the fashion world was stunned to learn of the passing of noted fashion designer L’Wren Scott.

After beginning her career as a model for the likes of Chanel and Calvin Klein, the 6’3" style icon launched her eponymous label in 2006. Adept at creating flattering, feminine silhouettes, her designs were beloved by the likes of Angelina Jolie and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Her death is a true tragedy for the fashion world. May her legacy continue to live on.

Who got to see FLOTUS and POTUS live at the SOTU last night? (For all of you abbreviation-phobes out there, translation: Michelle, Barack, State of the Union. You’re welcome.) If you said, “Of course, it has to be someone from Duck Dynasty,” you’d be right. Star Willie Robertson attended as a guest of his friend Rep. Vance McAllister of Louisiana. Yep. Wonder if he brought his duck call.

Michelle Obama, on the inspiration behind her new(ish) bangs:

We Couldnt Have Said It Better

Her new ‘do elicited many different reactions from the general public – some more favorable than others. But all I have to say? Cheers to the most fashionable mid-life crisis ever.

iStock_000003951574SmallWhile we love to hypothesize about the romances of our favorite celebrities (looking at you, Taylor Swift), there’s one thing better than the cycle of makeups and breakups in the spotlight – the fashion. These stylish lovebirds are always on our best-dressed list:

Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen: A Brazilian supermodel and an NFL superstar with runway good looks? Okay, fine. You guys win.

David and Victoria Beckham: Celebrity designer meets (and marries) hunky athlete. Every date night is a fashion statement for these two.

Jay-Z and Queen Bey: Because – she’s Beyoncé.

Barack and Michelle Obama: The First Couple are the new Kennedys. Michelle has become a fashion icon in her own right, and her signature style – pairing designer labels with brands like J.Crew – continuously stuns.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge: Kate Middleton’s fashion influence has a near-global reach. From the Alexander McQueen wedding dress to her grocery-store attire, Kate’s style has morphed into a cult-like obsession. (And the Prince in Irish Guards? Yes, please.)
