It’s safe to say Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come a long way. In terms of fashion, that is. From an awkward alien teen in 3rd Rock from the Sun to a young head-over-heels-in-love professional in 500 Days of Summer to a suave agent in Inception, he’s dipped his toes in a variety of roles and styles. And emerged as the guy to watch.

To snag one of his signature looks, try these simple steps:

1. Ditch the classics for this one. Grab a pair of slim leg pants in grey or black (treat it like a neutral) or dark straight-leg denim (a JGL staple).

2. Pair with a plaid shirt. Give it a tuck all around for a polished look. Then, unbutton the top two buttons and haphazardly cuff the sleeves. No undershirt.

3. Add a black leather belt and corresponding stainless steel watch. Casual cool? Mastered.

Now practice Joseph’s charming grin and you’re good to go.

When it comes to watches, leather and steel bands are timeless, fail-safe options year-round. But come spring (i.e. now), in the spirit of that whole refresh-and-renew thing, you should think about switching up your watch game. And canvas straps are just the on-trend way to do it.

Canvas-Strap Watches for Spring

Preppy: A hint of color. Maybe a bold stripe or two. Nothing says you’re counting down the minutes to your Nantucket ferry ride like a fun canvas watch strap – especially when paired with seersucker.

Classic: A clean, stainless steel face with a band that could just as easily be leather, a canvas strap brings the texture your wrist’s been missing. Plus, it’s still totally office-appropriate.

Military: Channel that whole urban-warrior/safari vibe with an army-green band and gunmetal detailing. This rugged wristwear is equally at home on hikes as it is stalking “prey” at the bar.

Our The Men’s Watch Guide: Canvas-Band Edition Boutique is now open.

Guys, let’s be honest. We were over winter before it even started. Here’s to kicking cold weather to the curb and planning a killer spring.

1. Forget sweater investment. Put that money toward your shoe game. (Bright wing tips, anyone?)

2. Find a way to get your hands on these car keys. There are digits to be scored at stoplights.

3. Start polishing your clubs now. You’ll want to fit in as many golf courses as possible this season.

4. A round of craft beer always tastes good, and a view just makes it better. Rooftop bar it is.

5. Time means a little less this time of year, but a watch (cough, Rolex, cough) is always an eye-catching addition.

From boots fit for a good old fashioned New England snowdrift to an “heirloom” watch (for girls who don’t like waiting around), here’s a look at all the lovely things I’ll be snapping up off of Rue this week.

From left to right:

Rotary men’s watch. The heirloom-watch look? With a classic leather band and old-school Roman numerals, this timeless ticker is how I plan to achieve it (and without that whole waiting-around-to-inherit part). Our Arm Candy: Stackable Bracelets & Watches Boutique opens Tuesday, November 27, at 11AM ET.

French Connection dress. Hello, holiday party (or New Years party… or any party) no-brainer. Our French Connection Women Boutique opens Tuesday, November 27, at 11AM ET.

Sorel boot. A New England snowdrift? In these take-no-prisoners lace-ups, bring it on. Our Sorel Men & Women Boutique opens Monday, November 26, at 11AM ET.
