How to Outfit Your Summer in Venice Beach Style

It’s officially June. Which means endless summer days lie ahead. To inspire your sunny-day look? We turned to a place that knows warm weather year-round: Venice Beach, CA. Here are the three items you need to pull off that easy, laid-back vibe.

Venice Beach–Inspired Summer Dressing

On Top: Go for a lighter-than-light cotton tee (or tank for the beach) in any shade of blue. Wear untucked, always.

On Bottom: Knee-length chinos in an easy neutral or, if you’re feeling bold, a pop of red or out-there print. If you can’t have fun in the summer, when can you?

The Extras: All you need? Sunblock and a good pair of sunglasses. Try classic rectangular black frames or a modified take on the iconic aviator – a plastic frame freshens up the traditional look.

If you feel so inclined, complete the look with a (temporary) tattoo or two, then hit the boardwalk like a pro.

Our City Vibe: Style Inspired by Venice Beach, CA Boutique opened Sunday, June 1, at 11AM ET.

Are My Chinos Too Short? Here’s How to Tell

Chinos. They’re a standard part of your wardrobe, but do you really know how long they should be? If they’re puddling over your shoes or creeping up toward your shins, you could be way off. Here’s how to find the just-right length – and make sure they work with every shoe you own.

BLG-2018_Regular[1]

Step 1: Find the Right Chino Length
As a general rule, your chinos should be about a half-inch off the ground when you’re barefoot. Once you slip on oxfords or loafers, the hem should graze the top of your shoe – without a break or fold. And a sure sign your chinos are too short? Your socks peek out when you walk. Use that knowledge as a try-on test when picking out a new pair.

Step 2: Make That Length Work with Every Shoe
The above chino length is great for the office. But if you’re wearing flip-flops? Reinforce the casual vibe by giving that hem a couple rolls to show some ankle. Prefer short boots or chukkas? Keep rolling. The hem should end at least a half-inch below the tops of your boots.

Round out your chino collection. Our Short Sleeves & Chinos: The Summer-Friday Uniform Boutique opens Saturday, May 3, at 11AM ET.

Guys, Do Yourself a Solid: Try a Pattern This Spring

Easy and breathable, it’s a safe bet you’ll be living in lightweight cotton button-fronts this spring and summer. But resorting to the same solid shirts over and over again can get boring. So, if you’ve got a closet full of solids – or if you’re just looking to shake things up a bit – here are the three patterns to work into the rotation.

3 Patterns Guys Need This Spring

1. Geometric: Consider this your baby step into the world of patterns. Your best bet is to seek out a small, repeating print like dots, hexagons, or interlocking circles. The goal is a print that blends from far away. Just add chinos and loafers and you’re set for the office – or drinks at the country club.

2. Floral: Men’s florals are big right now. To ease into the look, try a print with a subtle white background. Wear it under a sport coat with jeans to keep it tame. Or go bolder and style it unbuttoned with a white tee and shorts – like a more sophisticated alternative to the Hawaiian shirt.
