Jean Savers: 4 Tips to Help Maintain Your Denim

Jeans. You basically live in them. So it’s nothing sort of tragic when your go-to pair starts getting that telltale inner-thigh thinning (we’ve all been there) or starts to lose its perfectly broken-in shape or hue. But fear not. Here are a few quick tips to ensure that those days are far, far away.

Maintain Your Denim

  1. Don’t wash too much. Only launder your jeans when they’re stained or starting to sag.
  2. If you’re concerned about odor, hang your jeans in the bathroom before a shower to freshen them up with damp steam. Or go ahead and freeze them in a plastic bag for a day or two.
  3. When you do have to subject your denim to the spin cycle, turn it inside out and use cold water to maintain the color. If it’s your first-ever wash, try vinegar instead of detergent. The acid helps set the hue.
  4. Keep machine drying to a minimum. Toss the jeans in for ten minutes on high, then hang them upside down to air-dry. Or, if you don’t have time to air-dry, choose the lowest possible heat setting.

Celebrity Style to Watch: Justin Timberlake

When it comes to style moves, Justin Timberlake has it down to a science. From tailored suits with patterned shirts to your not-so-average basic tees, there’s no denying he brought sexy back (to the style game, of course). But it’s his chill, laid-back vibe we love the most: relaxed jeans, casual kicks, and sleek shades.

Celebrity Style to Watch: Justin Timberlake
To snag one of his signature looks, follow these simple steps:

  1. Skip the suit and tie for this one. Start with a pair of relaxed straight-leg jeans in a medium or dark wash.
  2. Casually layer on a loose-fitting graphic tee and button-front shirt. Undo the buttons, give the collar a little push, and wear it untucked. Loosely roll the sleeves up to your elbows to show off some arm candy.
  3. You can’t go wrong with stylish shades. And throw on a hat, like a newsboy cap or fedora.

All you need is JT’s confident smirk and you’re ready to go.

For extra inspiration, head to our Leading Man: Get Justin Timberlake’s Off-Duty Look Boutique. Opens Monday, June 30, at 11AM ET.

Your Belt Questions, Answered

Belts. One is enough, right? Wrong. Belts are a great way to switch up an outfit or repurpose the same one you’ve been wearing week after week (you can’t fool us). Here are the answers to three questions about belt-ology.

The Men's Guide to Belts

1. What kind of belt should I wear with jeans? With a suit?
For jeans, throw on a leather, tweed, wool, or cotton belt – all these options look great against denim. On the other hand, a suit requires a sleek and simple belt. For navy suits, go with dark brown. For black and grey, look toward black leather.

2. How long should my belt be?
Dress belts should have at least a few inches to the left once fastened. Too-short lengths make the belt appear too tight (you don’t want people to think you’re going to pop a button or anything). Casual belts can be worn looser since they’re not as stiff.

3. Should I choose a thin or thick belt?
It’s all about the occasion. Never wear a thin (less than 1 inch in width) belt with jeans. That’s strictly for the ladies, and let’s keep it that way. With denim, go for a heftier buckle and thicker belt (between 1 and 1.5 inches in width). A thin(ner) option is, however, appropriate for formal and dressy events.

Still can’t decide? Own one black and one brown belt. You can’t go wrong.

Our Below the Belt: Denim, Boxers, Socks, & More Boutique opens Thursday, June 26 at 11AM ET.

The 3 Jeans Men Need (And How on Earth to Wear Them)

That one pair of jeans you wear for every occasion? Give it a bit of well-deserved rest. (Seriously, it must be just about falling apart.) When it comes to all the different denim washes and cuts, there’s a time and place for everything. But don’t panic. Here’s the breakdown of what pair to wear where and how to style it right for the occasion.

Men's Denim by Occasion

Date Night: An evening out with your significant other (or latest conquest) calls for a pair of relaxed or boot-cut jeans in a dark blue hue. Play it cool by adding a graphic tee and blazer or go all out in a button-front and sport coat.

Casual Friday: When it comes to working denim into your office look, stick to dark, narrow-leg styles. Pair your jeans with a button-front. Tuck the shirt in – because hey, you’re still at work – but roll the sleeves for a more laid-back vibe.

The Weekend: This is where you can break out your lighter, distressed styles. Just throw on a graphic tee, Henley, or hoodie. Add a pair of canvas or leather sneakers and hit the bar to watch the game and have a few brews with the guys.

Our Men’s Denim for Every Occasion: Date Night & More Boutique opens on Sunday, April 20, at 11AM ET.

In Good Fashion: Levi’s® Recycled Jeans

This just in – bottles can be made into jeans. (Yep. Keep reading.)

Always a trailblazer in the world of denim, Levi’s® has announced that it’ll be rolling out a new line of jean products  Waste<Less™  that will include at least 20% of recycled products, post-consumer use (translation: each item will contain approximately eight 12- to 20-ounce bottles in its material).

No Bill Nye myself, picturing this textile feat wasn’t easy. Turns out though, products made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) materials – like brown beer bottles, green soda bottles, clear water bottles and black food trays – can be crushed down into miniscule flakes and then made into polyester fiber. The polyester fiber is blended with cotton fiber, and the blend is then woven with traditional cotton to create the actual denim.

The first iteration of Waste<Less™ products is set to launch in Spring 2013, and – get this – it will be utilizing approximately 3.5 million recycled bottles.

Sounds like permission to go on a jean-shopping binge, if you ask me.

Rue How-To: Dressing for A Summer Concert

OUR GO-TO LOOKS FOR THE CONCERT CIRCUIT

William Rast

There’s nothing quite like a late summer concert. The days are still long, the air still warm, and the amplifiers still cranked to 11. Whether you’re hitting up a free show on the Brooklyn waterfront or taking in a set at The Fillmore, we believe in looking backstage fresh. Who knows, you might be called on stage for a guest appearance.

Luckily, the solution to the concert fashion quandary is a quick fix. We’re loving the rocker appeal of William Rast, the clothing company founded by Justin Timberlake and Tracy Ayala. This is the look of the world-tour, lifestyle-premium denim (that looks better unwashed, after several consecutive days of wear), tailored leather jackets (preferably in the iconic black of the Ramones), and essential graphic Ts. Of all pieces, the graphic T is most emblematic of the anti-hero vibe that comes from being under the bright lights and elusively answering questions from interviewers. It has sass and attitude, and is not afraid of being in your face. It is the definition of swagger.
