When it comes to heartfelt artwork, artist Rebecca Puig knows her stuff. From touching prints to sentiment pillows, she creates pieces every room can benefit from. Here, we caught up with her to talk inspiration and interior design.

Rue La La: Your artwork is incredible. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Rebecca: I get inspiration from my children’s art, nature, animals, words, messages, and symbols – and in unlikely and strange places.

Rue La La: Your company has grown so much since first launching in 2002. What’s in store for the future of Sugarboo?
Rebecca: We are super-excited about the new ceramic line I am doing with my mom. She is a talented artist and introduced me to ceramics 20 years ago. It’s a really sweet line and all the sweeter because my mom is part of it.

Rue La La: The quotes in your pieces are so touching and inspirational. How do you choose them? Is there a personal story behind each one?
Rebecca: If a message gives me one of those aha moments Oprah likes to talk about or if I get goose bumps then I want to share that with everyone else. I don’t always have a personal story for each one, but only know they somehow reached my core.

Rue La La: What are your tips for displaying a really great piece of artwork (like yours)?
Rebecca: I think it is important to enjoy your favorite art every day, so I would say to always put your favorite pieces in your most highly trafficked areas so they are really a part of your everyday life – sometimes putting a fancy painting in the mudroom or a rustic painting in the dining room creates a more interesting juxtaposition anyway.

Rue La La: I imagine your house to have amazing décor – can you tell me a little bit about it?
Rebecca: I love telling my family’s story in our house and I think I have every possible design taste under the sun – quirky, fun, serious, folky, modern, rustic. I love to mix them all because I feel like I am all those things. I have never decorated around a painting, but that is not a bad idea!

We’re all about destination glamour and transporting our customer to a location. And every season, I design collections based on two inspirations: a muse and a place. For Fall 2010, I was inspired by Jackie O. and her years in New York City.

Like New York itself, Jackie O. was multi-dimensional and complex. She expressed her style yet always remained classic, elegant, and timeless. I am fascinated by the legacy of her culture, compassion, and charm.

My personal favorites from the collection:

1. Alexandra Black Croc: A classic vintage clutch for the Jackie O. in us all.
2. Sand Snake Slim Frame Clutch: The perfect travel companion – a wallet by day and sleek clutch by night.
3. Paige Plum Studded Flat: The plum hue of this flat evokes a feeling of royalty, while the studs add some edge.
4. Mel Leopard Velvet: A festive holiday flat with rich enamel hardware.

Katya Moorman has two great loves: Fashion and NYC. Her blog, Style Defined NYC, combines these two passions – and gives us a glimpse into the world of style in the city that never sleeps. We sat down with the uber-cool blogger to learn a thing or two about the fashion fresh on the streets of Manhattan.

Rue La La: Explain street style.
Katya: It’s a sense of individuality. It’s fearlessness, a sense of “now” and knowing fashion well enough to deconstruct or comment on a trend. It also involves the ability to break away from fashion uniforms – the little black dress tends to be safe and boring no matter how you accessorize it.

Rue La La: What makes someone’s style truly compelling?
Katya: Boldness and confidence. This might seem like an easy answer, but it’s the truth! While NYC is considered an “anything goes” place in terms of fashion, in reality it’s full of little style tribes that follow each other: the skinny jean androgynous boys, the “intentionally quirky” Brooklyn girls, the Gossip Girl wannabes in the Meatpacking District. But it’s the people who aren’t afraid to step outside their tribe that captures my attention.

Rue La La: Do you have any favorite styles?
Katya: I really like style with a sense of humor that borders on kooky! Lady Gaga and the late Isabella Blow both know how to do that. And the Japanese seem to have this down better than any other culture.

Rue La La: What can we learn from great street style (especially this fall)?
Katya: Try to add the unexpected. For example: I don’t see the DIY shredded trend going away yet, so the natural progression is to see it moving from T-shirts to sweaters. But if you’re going to do that, instead of taking an oversized black sweater (soooo predictable!), find a small pink angora cardigan or a preppy tennis sweater.

Rue La La: Can you fill us in on some of the styles you expect to see on the streets of NYC this fall?
Katya: Men’s cardigans as jackets, socks with platform sandals and boots, layered leggings (i.e., tights with fishnets over them, sheer stockings with over-the-knee socks, loose/short legwarmers, headscarves or turbans, punk/new wave-influenced hairstyles, men’s vintage boots (on both men and women), and of course black-black-black.

Rue La La: Any favorite places to people/stylewatch?
Katya: I love scoping out the urban middle school girls on the subway. They have their own, very specific style that’s fun to observe.

Rue La La: Where do you find your fashion inspiration?
Katya: New York City is my playground. I love to go to the club nights hosted by Kenny Kenny, Ladyfag, or Amanda Lepore where young gay fashionistas and full-on drag queens come out to play. Their style is amazing, and I often see things here months before anywhere else.
