While a full renovation may not be in my (er, my landlord’s) budget, I will not be deterred. Instead, I’m starting small, with my home’s problem rooms. You know the kind: those spaces that are just too weirdly shaped, or are lacking windows, or are all too cozy. In my old Boston home there are plenty of nooks and crannies that, no matter what I do, just haven’t worked – yet. Here, some crafty tricks to make even the strangest space feel like it was designed by a pro.

Welcome back, home designers, to our final installment of SPACEStv segments. This week, there was an eclectic group of subjects: one hunter, one puppeteer, and one vintage-loving stylist/designer/curator with an incredibly compact lifestyle.

Your Place is a Dealbreaker:

Meet Jessica and Jeremy, a married couple out to prove that love can transcend all (even a hunting obsession). Enter the designer, Vanessa DeLeon, who shows how girly girl and manly man mentalities can meld into one harmonious home office.

A room that started as a total man cave gets transformed into an amazingly serene office with just enough floral elements to please nature-happy Jessica. The grey and yellow color scheme fosters both a serene and vibrant environment, and the wall decals create an eye-catching visual forest. I love Vanessa’s idea to complement the deer head with a Venetian frame – it takes a traditionally macho piece of décor and elevates it to elegant new levels.

Take Me Home:

Host Arden Myrin meets a puppeteer named Jimbo on the streets of Williamsburg, and his apartment is as eclectic as you might imagine. Arden predicts a very visually oriented space with not much clutter, and she is partially right. What she does not predict: the toys.

Jimbo is in the process of creating a children’s show, so the apartment is full of youthful accents, like a hanging swing and school lockers for storing odds and ends (not to mention shelves and shelves of toys and puppets). The floorplan is open and the ceilings are incredibly high, so each bedroom is lofted (like a tree house, as Arden describes it). My favorite touches were the windows in each bedroom – you can practically envision the factory foreman sitting up there in the space’s past life.

Tiny Eclectic Amazing Spaces:

Suzi West owns a boutique in Brooklyn, and lives in a 200-square-foot flat – the smallest space we’ve seen yet in this segment (by almost half!). Suzi’s apartment features a gorgeous outdoor garden that is about three times the size of her flat. This apartment is truly a testament to the power of design.

A lover of all things vintage, Suzi has an incredible handmade chest of drawers to keep all her odds and ends organized. Her bed also serves as a couch (with the addition of loads of colorful pillows), and she opts for sconces instead of full, dangling chandeliers. Her tiny space (complete with an appropriately tiny puppy named Tchotchke) has a strongly curated feel – everything has been diligently selected and the additions of graphic signs and posters create a lot of unique visual appeal. Suzi’s space is so well streamlined, it almost makes me want to opt for compact living – almost.

Welcome back, home design fanatics. This week’s segments on SPACEStv were all about inspiration, be it from the home, the streets, or the beach.

Your Place is a Deal Breaker:

Meet Dominique and Nathan, an in-love couple with not-so-harmonious decorating styles. Dominique is all about a simple, black-and-white color scheme, while musician Nathan craves vibrant colors to inspire him. The cure for their dispute? Simple – just add red.

Designer Vanessa Deleon maintains some of Dominique’s favorite elements (like her zebra print rug), but revamps the room with splashes of color via a red accent wall and tons of throw pillows. Vanessa creates a faux window simply by hanging sheer panels from a curtain rod over a hanging photo of busy NYC streets, which brings a sense of the outdoors in (always crucial when it comes to city living). The end result of the makeover is a simple room with tons of unique touches. The mounted mirror candleholders? I think I’ve found my next DIY project.

Take Me Home:

Host Arden Myrin is at it again, propositioning strangers to show her their home. This week, she finds two hipsters strolling through Bushwick in Brooklyn who take her to their eight-person home in the infamous McKibbin Lofts. These lofts – known for their young, artsy vibe (and party-happy residents) – do not disappoint.

The converted factory offers the residents soaring 12-foot ceilings, plus other unique touches like brick walls and a spiral staircase. But the biggest contributions are from the residents themselves, past and present, who have decked the space out – we’re talking shelves held together with water pipes and street finds like old bottles and paper globes repurposed into hanging art. You can tell artists live in this loft. My favorite touch? The loft’s art studio/music studio/hammock room (yes, hammock room), where the communal creativity is at its peak. This place is a hipster mecca – in all the right ways.

Tiny Eclectic Amazing Spaces:

Moving from L.A. to NYC, photographer Michelle James lost 1,200 square feet of living space, but she made the most of what she has, covering the walls in bright, vibrant colors. A Florida girl at heart, Michelle imbued her apartment with beachy tones (and playful additions like a jar of sand from her hometown).

The purples, pinks, and greens adorning her apartment pop beautifully against the apartment’s wood floors and white molding. Michelle also added loads of space-saving touches, like drawers built into the bed and vertical storage for shoes. The color lends an incredible amount of brightness to the apartment – making it feel like a much more vast and exciting space than your standard 300-square-foot NYC space.

Welcome back, home design fanatics. This week, we’re exploring one tiny apartment, one massive apartment, and one apartment that is distinctly… pink.

Tiny Eclectic Amazing Spaces:

This episode brings us to a 500-square-foot apartment with ingenious storage options. Serving as both a home and office for Michael Pozner, every inch of the space has been thought out (with the help of architect Darrick Borowski). The bedroom area is lofted (an instant space saver), but it gets better – the stairs themselves are drawers. We’re talking a veritable staircase-dresser.

There are tons of ingenious little touches, like storage compartments carved into the wall, and a block of wood that houses the doors into the bathroom, kitchen, and closet. Though he had the advantage of professional assistance, Michael was able to use every inch of his apartment, demonstrating that functionality does not have to be limited by mere square footage.

Take Me Home:

This episode showcases a stunner on the Upper West Side. The owner of this apartment, while dressed down on the streets, has an amazing, high-tech condo (actually, two condos combined for 2,250 sprawling square feet of space). Host Arden Myrin calls this apartment “the mother lode,” and boy, is she right.

The floor plan is open and spacious, and the living room offers views of the river in the distance. While the location is superb, the décor is the real highlight here. My favorite touches include a central remote control system for lights, shades, and more; a three-sided fireplace; and unbelievable kitchen countertops (made of agate from Israel, they’re translucent with inner lighting). There are also three bedrooms, and a master bathroom worthy of a four-star hotel (think inset TV by the bathtub).

Your Place is a Deal Breaker:

In this three-piece segment, we meet Alfie and Natassia, a happy pair that couldn’t be more different. Natassia, the epitome of a girly girl, has an apartment full of pink, polka dots, and leopard print. Alfie, a gamer, feels overwhelmed and emasculated by her apartment (especially when his friends stop by for a visit).

Vanessa Deleon revamps the room (and the color palette) to be much more gender-friendly and welcoming to all. First, she builds an entertainment system so Alfie can store his gadgets out of sight. Then, she removes all hints of pink and infuses the room with much subtler hues of grey. The new room is elegant and sophisticated, with quiet splashes of glamour (like understated throw pillows with a hint of frill). And more importantly, there’s not even a hint of that earlier in-your-face pink in sight.
