The Birkin. The Kelly. The… Evelyne? That’s right, there’s another Hermès sister in town. Designed in 1978, the bag has been around for decades. But it wasn’t until recently that it began cropping up on style blogs and celebs’ shoulders. Read on for five must-know facts about our latest obsession.

Hermes Evelyne Bag

  1. Évelyne Bertrand, then the head of the Hermès riding department, was the inspiration behind the bag.
  2. Originally, the design was marketed as a carryall for equestrian accessories, but it has since been repositioned as a chic crossbody.
  3. The bag’s trademark H was purposely perforated to allow horse-grooming tools to dry.
  4. It has gone through three generational transformations:
    • Evelyne I: It was first created without an external pocket.
    • Evelyne II: Next time around, an outer pocket was added (hello, lipstick storage).
    • Evelyne III: Today’s version has the best of all worlds – the pocket and an adjustable canvas strap.
  5. Though the logo was originally intended to be worn facing in, it is almost always worn facing out.

Pop art sculpture. The desirable Hermès Birkin bag. What happens when these two icons unite? One hot-ticket auction item comes up for grabs.

Jeff Koons Birkin Sculpture

Artist Jeff Koons customized Birkins and worked them into one-of-a-kind sculptures, which will sell to the highest bidders over the weekend in New York City. But these aren’t your average Birkins (as if such a thing even exists). Notable personalities donated the bags for this project, including Sofia Coppola, Marc Jacobs, and Diane von Furstenberg.

The winners of these covetable pieces won’t just have new décor for their living rooms – they’ll also be benefiting Project Perpetual, an art philanthropy that supports the United Nations Foundation.

Some people spend $185,000 on a house. But one ambitious bidder shelled out the same amount for an Hermès Birkin.

Sold through Heritage Auction in Los Angeles, this particular bag puts ordinary $7,000 Birkins to shame. Made of matte Himalayan Nilo Crocodile – meant to evoke images of the Himalayan mountains – the bag features 18-karat white gold hardware and 245 diamonds (a whopping 9.84 carats total).

The only bag to top this one’s price on the auction block was a red crocodile Birkin that went for $203,150 in 2011.

Looks like I should start saving for that dream home – er, I mean bag.

To all of you out there who dream in orange boxes, whose hearts go thud-thud with the sight of that signature H, lend me your ear: There’s an app for that. For men and women alike, it’s deliciously fun to play with. Introducing Tie Break, Hermès’s recently launched smartphone app designed “to help you take a break from the harsh realities of office, airport, or public transport…or even a dull date” with “a random dose of Hermès.” Tie break

In essence, it’s a quippy little exercise in Hermès tie knowledge-building, made fun through GIFs, games, and comics. Each time you open the app, a new one of these “surprises” will be waiting for you. Use it as a way to wean off of 2048 and CandyCrush, or to read up on the differences between Hermès’s collection of luxe silk neckties – so you can make an educated decision on your next purchase. Download the Tie Break app here. P.S. Be patient with the download. It’s far more turtle than hare. But we all know who wins that race. By Joanna Berliner, Editor

As I start to think about wardrobe updates for fall, I can’t help but feel a little giddy about layering and leather. So, let’s consider these must-haves a sneak peek for fall – and then get back to enjoying the warm weather while it’s still here.

1. Hermès Canvas Backpack. Give a nod to the 90s with this classic backpack. Don’t worry – “No white after Labor Day” no longer applies.
2. J Brand Leather Pants. When it comes to leather skinnies, no one does it better than this label. Opt for a blush hue to soften the look.
3. Bucco “Bammy” Sneaker. Borrow from the street-style stars and try slip-on sneakers. This snakeskin pair will go with anything.
4. Andrew Marc Shearling & Fur Jacket. Own the shearling trend in this luxe – and uber-cool – number.
5. IPPOLITA “Modern Rock Candy” Drop Earrings. These gold geometric earrings are seasonless, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t the ideal jewelry-box addition for fall.

Forget about size, silhouette, or season – it’s what dresses the outside of your bag that matters most. As long as it fits into one of these three categories, that is.

Prints & Patterns
Allover-flower patterns and abstract looks not right for you? Not to worry. Add drama to your handbag routine (without overdoing it) by going with a subtle check.

Bold Colors
No fall wardrobe is complete without some vibrant harvest hues. Opt for a bright orange or energetic red to bring life to the sea of black winter coats.

Always classic, it’s crucial to keep an LBB (little black bag) in your arsenal at all times. A staple black bag also elevates cozy knits, dark-wash jeans, and cashmere alike.
