At-Home Know-How: 3 Things to Try, Stat

For clean jewelry: Booze to clean your baubles? Yep, it works. For 14-karat gold, use a light- or amber-colored beer. For glass, crystal, and diamond, break out the vodka.

For scuffed leather: Your soft-skin secret is your bag’s secret, too. Buff face oil into leather scuffs, scratches, and slight discolorations – but make sure to spot test first.

For old denim: Breathe life into old jeans (or impulse-purchased blues) with a baroque pattern stencil and fabric paint. Here’s how.

A Look Back: Dooney & Bourke from 1975 to Today

Dooney & Bourke. The name is an American classic, but I’m willing to bet there’s a lot you don’t know about how these duck-branded handbags and accessories got to be so popular (besides their good looks, that is). Here’s the breakdown.

BLG-1615 Boutique Support- Dooney+Bourke

1975: Peter Dooney and Frederic Bourke launch their namesake leather goods line in South Norwalk, CT. Preppy striped surcingle belts and oh-so-dapper suspenders form the foundation of the business.

1981: Dooney & Bourke branches out into the handbag biz with the release of their Tack Case and Equestrian Bag, both made from bridle leather.

1983: The brand releases its first All-Weather Leather (AWL) handbag collection. Moisture slides off the 100% waterproof leather like water off a duck’s back, hence the line’s distinctive oval leather duck logo.

1997: Dooney.com launches, introducing lots and lots of American-made handbags and accessories to the interwebs.

2006 – 2008: Young celebs Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere collaborate with Dooney & Bourke to create namesake styles – a.k.a. the “Emma” and the “Hayden” – that add versatility to the brand’s offerings.

July 24, 2013: This now-iconic leather goods brand makes its Rue La La debut. Oh, happy day.

Our Dooney & Bourke Boutique opens Wednesday, July 24, at 11AM ET.

Bring Those Cool-Weather Hues Into Spring

Who says last season's bag can't take on warmer temps?

That brand new bag you just purchased a few months ago? You know, the one that’s the perfect shade for chillier temps – a deep red, or an olive green? Well, I’ve got great news for you: that bag doesn’t have to be retired just because the seasons have turned. In fact, sometimes those earthy hues can be paired with shades worthy of spring for some very unexpected – and totally stylish – color combos.

Fall Bags in Spring

See? Paired with the right springy colors, these bags make the transition easy. So go ahead and shop – and never be deterred by seasonal colors again.

Our Foley + Corinna Boutique opens Friday, January 11, at 11AM ET.

NYFW Front-Row Trend: Fluro Satchels

Fluro bags

If three’s a trend (as they say in fashion), I guess five or six is a phenomenon. Such is the case with this structured bookbag from The Cambridge Satchel Company, a UK-based bag maker whose retro-inspired cross-body has become all the rage among fashion insiders.

While the company makes its most popular style in a range of classic colors – from basic black to saddle tan to brick red – it’s the fluoroscent green and yellow hues that are being carried by in-the-know fashionistas. Modeled after a classic school bag, this boxy unisex carryall was given a thoroughly modern makeover in shades so bold they almost glow in the dark (making them really pop against the all-black ensembles worn by most New York showgoers).

Designer Inspiration: Elaine Turner on “The Jackie O,” and More

BY ELAINE TURNER

Elaine Turner

We’re all about destination glamour and transporting our customer to a location. And every season, I design collections based on two inspirations: a muse and a place. For Fall 2010, I was inspired by Jackie O. and her years in New York City.

Like New York itself, Jackie O. was multi-dimensional and complex. She expressed her style yet always remained classic, elegant, and timeless. I am fascinated by the legacy of her culture, compassion, and charm.
