The 2014 Emmy Awards Best-Dressed List: Men’s Edition

Normally when it comes to red carpet fashion, all eyes are on the leading (and supporting!) ladies. Post–awards show, the Internet is abuzz with “What was she thinking?” and “Oh my, she really nailed it.” But now it’s time to pay the men of the Emmy Awards the respect they so deserve. In old-school formal outfits, a whole lot of blue, and some fresh takes on traditional tuxes, these guys dressed to impress. But who came out on top?

GQ cast its vote in a recent articleSeth Meyers in navy Valentino (pictured above) hit it out of the park – not only with his dapper tux and bow tie, but with his monologues too. Bryan Cranston in Ralph Lauren Black Label proved that when you channel Clark Gable, you win a boatload of Emmys.

And then there was Ryan Sweeting in a striking blue tuxedo jacket. “We really expected the night’s A-list TV actors to make bolder moves on the red carpet,” said Matt Sebra of GQ. “Not the tennis pro husband of that blond girl from the Big Bang Theory. But the actors didn’t, Sweeting did, and that’s why he makes the list.” (Hey Ryan, can I borrow your jacket? I promise I’ll give it back.)

Man of Modesty: Kendrick Lamar Buys Low-Priced Home Outside L.A.

Kendrick Lamar may be a red-carpet regular and GQ‘s reigning Rapper of the Year, but it turns out he’s a pretty humble guy in spite of it all. Proof? The 26-year-old rap star recently bought a house in Eastvale, California, which is an hour north of Los Angeles, to the very reasonable tune (in the rap world, anyway) of $523,500.

Lamar’s purchase of the relatively modest, four-bedroom abode flies in the face of the lavishness that’s come to represent mainstream rap, but it’s completely in character for the Compton native. He has talked openly about growing up on welfare, the dangers of materialism, the importance of smart money management, and a rejection of indulgences stereotypical of his industry peers. If the budding superstar’s refreshing message is as well received as his work has been, we likely haven’t seen anything yet. And when it comes to Lamar’s riches, that’s just how he wants it.

Brad Pitt to Star in True Detective: Yea or Nay?

When I caught word that Matthew McConaughey wouldn’t be returning for season two of True Detective, I have to admit, I panicked. However, considering the HBO show is an anthology and with each season the cast and theme changes, I should have been prepared to see McConaughey go. As for his replacement? It looks like the show might enlist the one and only Brad Pitt. But, to be honest, that’s not really easing my anguish. Or anyone else’s, it seems.

45-Minute Man: Michael Fassbender’s Golden Globes Prep

If you’re going to win a Golden Globe, you better look flawless when you’re spouting out thank-yous (to every person you’ve ever met in your entire life) on stage – regardless of your gender. Just ask the beautiful Robin Wright and her flash of double-sided boob tape.

So how long does it take a guy to look award-acceptance good? If you’re the talented, ruggedly slick Michael Fassbender, the answer is: 45 minutes. First, the blow-dry. Then, the facial serums. And don’t forget the beard control. It’s all a little more exhausting than the swipe-of-deodorant-and-go routine. But, alas, sometimes we must make sacrifices.

Read up on his full Golden Globes prep routine on GQ.
