It’s officially that time of year again: awards season. And the red carpet at last night’s Golden Globes ceremony didn’t disappoint.

With small-screen actors and major movie stars mingling together – Jennifer Aniston, Amy Adams, and Kerry Washington among them – the big fashion trends were asymmetrical tops, sheer paneling, and sequins. But it was the celebrites who went outside the box and opted for something completely unexpected that caught my attention most. Here are five contenders for the night’s Best Dressed title.

The People’s Choice Awards wasn’t even a week ago and yet we’re already on to awards show number two: the Golden Globes. With a red carpet that included everyone from Julia Roberts to Taylor Swift, my best-dressed list is a true mix of Hollywood heavyweights and a new breed of style icons.

Sometimes, the magnetic power of a movie extends beyond a good story line. Maybe it’s the gripping soundtrack, stunning costumes (have you seen Gatsby?), or special effects that draw you in. For me, in the case of American Hustle, it’s all about the hair.

American Hustle

In director David O. Russell’s film that pits cons against Feds, the stars – Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner, and Amy Adams – collectively sport nearly every iconic style of the 70s, sometimes to a point that renders the actors nearly unrecognizable (I’m looking at you, Bruce Wayne). Even if you don’t like the aesthetics, you’re bound to appreciate the effort it took to get the cast ready for their close-ups. And I’m not alone in my fascination with the film’s follicular magic, which was masterminded by Makeup Department Head Evelyne Noraz. The folks at New York Magazine: The Cut snagged an interview with Noraz, who details every last wave, comb-over, pin curl, and perm, and reveals that, in the case of Hustle, the guys logged many more hours in the makeup chair than their female costars. Bradley Cooper with a spray tan and Jheri curls? Bring it.

And, as it turns out, the movie itself is apparently pretty good, too. It scooped up seven Golden Globe nominations this morning, including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

We know, we know, the Golden Globes happened on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean we can ignore the amount of live tweeting that went on. Here, a look at some of our favorite 140-character blurbs from the evening.

@elementstyle: Tommy Lee Jones did not look tickled.
Golden Globes understatement of the century.

@SusanCernek: Aces wife-husband move, Garner. I know who runs those parent-teacher conferences now, too.
You tell ’em, Susan.

@MarlowNYC: Every star’s pronunciation of ‘Les Miserables’ is the new Schmidt’s pronunciation of ‘Chutney’ on #NewGirl #GoldenGlobes
Can we start a petition to have Schmidt’s character be the next Golden Globes host?

@rachnasays: Leo always gets snubbed.
Can the Academy (or someone) PLEASE give Leo a chance?! Poor man is only getting older.

@heykmenz: Jennifer Lawrence and Amanda Seyfried may now begin facing off to be my new BFF.
We have a feeling JLaw might beat out Amanda. (You know, there was that whole Hunger Games thing and all.)

Red Carpet

Awards season is officially here, and after last night’s Golden Globes, it’s safe to say it started with a bang. While the night’s top moments belonged to Les Misérables, Ben Affleck’s Argo, and one very glittery Jodie Foster, let’s be honest – the red carpet was the real star of the show. Here are some of my favorite looks:

Claire Danes: The Homeland star looked gorgeous in a bold red Versace gown. Totally flattering and structured in just the right places, this gown made the brand new mom one of the best-dressed of the night. (And yes, you heard right – she’s just a month removed from giving birth.)

Anne HathawayBefore picking up the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture award, the Les Misérables star arrived in a sparkling white Chanel gown. The sleek, slim-cut shape was femme without frills – a perfect counterpoint to her pixie cut.

Jessica AlbaPerhaps one of the forgotten best-dressed of the night, Jessica Alba showed up in a strapless coral number and a blingy statement necklace. I loved the coloring – with her complexion, she pulled off that coral easily.

Kerry WashingtonIt’s not hard to make the Django Unchained star look beautiful, and when she opted for a neutral Miu Miu & Chopard gown, she reminded us that sometimes simpler is in fact better. Shimmery embellishments and some saucy sheer accents upgraded the straight shape, making the simple gown into something eye-catching.

Some other favorites: Taylor Swift looked surprisingly grown-up in a purple Donna Karan Atelier gown, Olivia Munn aimed for understated in a Giorgio Armani number, and Julianne Hough went all-out with cascading gold studs. After an ultra glamorous night like this, there’s only one thing to say – awards season, I missed you. (Only 41 days until the Oscars!)

See: One Direction is putting out a 3D movie. Wonder if Tay Swift will have a cameo?
