Determined to stick to your New Year’s resolution of working out more (or at all)? Great. Getting to the gym when the temperature outside has plummeted to sub-zero levels and another winter storm is heading your way? Easier said than done.

Though the weather outside is still frightful, don’t worry. We let Dom, Rue designer and certified personal trainer, walk us through a few moves we can easily pull off at home.

1. Pushups: Self-explanatory. This is a move you can utilize no matter your surroundings.

2. Lunge with Arm Curl: If you have a resistance band lying around (if not, they are available at most sporting good stores), incorporate it into your standard lunge. Pull the band up as you step into your lunge to work glutes, hamstrings, and quadriceps.

3. Mountain Climbers: You can try this core workout on a hardwood floor or other smooth surface. All you need? Two sheets of paper towels. Rapidly step each foot forward, one after the other, like you’re climbing a mountain (instead of, you know, sliding on your kitchen floor).

4. Backstrokes: Lie vertically, extend both arms above your head, and lift your legs off the floor. Reach forward and touch both ankles. Hello, abs of steel.

5. Plank Twists: Planking is more than just a worldwide trend. Support your weight with your arms and twist each leg inward to work your core muscles.

6. Crab Toe Touch: Support your weight with one arm while extending your leg forward and reaching out to touch your toes.

7. Squat & Press: While the Rue La La gym comes with no shortage of equipment, I definitely don’t have weights lying around my apartment. Dom says this move – designed to work shoulders, glutes, and hamstrings – can be easily achieved with a heavy can of tomatoes (or vegetable of your choice) or gallons of water. Simply begin in a squat position, holding your weights slightly above shoulder-level. Stand up and lift the weights above your head (then feel the burn).

Call me anti-January, but I’m typically not one for New Year’s resolutions. The fact that we’re expected to turn over a new leaf on January 1 – a day when many of us wake to a dreadful, post-bubbly hangover – has always felt a touch ironic. Yet this year, after a particularly hectic 2012, the thought of a resolution suddenly felt right. So I resolved – not for some sort of vague, broad-stroked goal (“eat healthy, save money”) – but to start small, with January.

This January, I will try something new every day. Thirty-one days of new.

Here’s a peek at week one:

Try a new food: Farro
With every intention of trying sea urchin or some gelatinous, gag-inducing organ on January 1, I instead began safely: an ancient grain found not in the back corners of Chinatown but front and center at my little subterranean Trader Joe’s. Its barley-like consistency paired (perhaps too perfectly) with my “kitchen sink” method of cooking – take some sort of grain, add anything and everything in fridge, consume.

Try a new gym: Sports Club/LA
Nothing against my tried-and-true gym (promise), I jumped at the chance to try Boston’s luxest of the luxe – for free. Tucked above the glitzy Ritz, Sport Club/LA’s two pristine floors of cardio, class space, squash courts, and more was like stepping into another world filled with Lululemon-clad superhumans. Lavender-scented towels enticed post-elliptical, but I have to say – I’ll take my come-as-you-are gym any day, thank you very much.

Try a new restaurant (in a new part of town): Posto in Davis Square & Tangierino in Charlestown
Trying new restaurants is one of my very favorite things to do, so I felt a little guilty putting it on my list. But in a new part of town? Totally counts. The squash pizza at Posto – heaped with roasted veggies and sage and baked to the perfect char in a woodfired oven – and the belly dancers (and anise-studded rolls) at Tangierino were most definitely worth the extended T ride.

Try a new fitness class: The Bar Method
I’ve been meaning to try barre for months, but frankly, it intimidated me. So when my friend mentioned she was taking a morning class, I took it as my cue to tag along. Fast forward through an hour of “Joanna, tuck your seat, point your toes, extend your leg…” I left hurting – and glowing – then immediately went home to book a class for the next morning.

The rest of the week, the “new” continued. I wore a leather tee to work – paired with fur. I drank 100 ounces of water in one day. I signed up for editing classes. I tried Duk Gook – Korean rice cake soup. I whipped up an insane green smoothie – and drank the whole thing. And now, eight days into it, I feel surprisingly rejuvenated – but also quite aware that I have just barely left my comfort zone.

Goal for the week ahead? Kick this resolution up a notch.

You’ve heard it before – new year, new fitness regimen. But before you hightail it to the treadmill, make sure you’re outfitted with kicks that fit with help from these quick tips.

Learn Your Foot Type. The best way to discover whether you have flat or high arches (or lie somewhere in between)? The wet test. Pour a layer of water onto a cookie sheet, step into the water with a bare foot, then step onto a piece of heavy paper. Decode your results and peep the full how-to here.

Then Outfit Accordingly:

High arches. This means you likely roll your feet out, or underpronate, when you run. Look for running sneakers that offer cushioning or flexibility.

Flat feet. Your feet probably roll inward (or overpronate), which means you’re best off with running sneakers that offer motion control and stability.

Normal (or medium) arches. You can wear just about any shoe (jealous!), so take your pick of the litter – and have fun with colors, trends, and styles.

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions? Getting in shape (just check out all the Pinterest boards dedicated to it). Well I, for one, am determined to make it happen this year – and luckily I have a secret weapon. From fun sneaks and a cute duffel to flattering, lightweight workout clothes, resolving to get fit seems easier (and more stylish) than ever.

The Shoes
With a bright, breathable mesh exterior, these running sneaks double as oh-so-cute commuter shoes.

The Clothes
A tank with a built-in supportive bra and sleek running tights (the perfect alternative to baggy shorts or sweatpants) are the gym clothes you won’t mind being spotted in.

The Bag
Not too bulky but big enough to fit sneaks, makeup, and a change of clothes, this athletic bag makes it easy to get all your gear to the gym before or after clocking out.

Our PUMA Boutique opens Friday, December 28, at 11AM ET.

AN INTERVIEW WITH TARA STILES, STRALA YOGA FOUNDER

Not only is Tara Stiles the founder of Strala Yoga Studio, author of Slim Calm Sexy, yoga expert for Women’s Health magazine, and a part-time model - she’s also taking time out of her busy schedule to head up the Ultimate Yoga Bootcamp at the Power Up Sundance retreat (our Boutique opens Wednesday, July 7). Get in on the action, and read what the yoga guru had to say about her craft.

Rue La La: Why yoga?
Tara: Yoga actively combines the body and the mind. Regular practice puts you in touch with your intuition, so you get a radiantly healthy body from the inside out - and a sharp, active mind. And if that doesn’t convince people, I tell them yoga reverses the aging process - it’s true!

Rue La La: How many times during the week do you actually have to do yoga to see results?
Tara: Three or four times a week is best to see results physically and mentally. When you practice regularly, you’ll see the benefits like stress reduction, sharper focus, and heightened creativity and intuition seep into your daily life. Moments like, “Hey, I have a great idea,” and, “My crazy boss doesn’t seem to get to me as much” start to happen more frequently.

Rue La La: What are these Power Up yoga retreats all about?
Tara: They’re fun, healthy, hip, and socially responsible. Power Up combines energizing and relaxing yoga classes to leave you inspired, alive, and refreshed. We’ll be in the gorgeous setting of Sundance with lots of active and relaxing activities, besides yoga, to choose from each day. And it’s important to me that we are funding environmental and social change by working with Robert Redford’s foundation.

Rue La La: We know it’s about the deep experience, but… can you divulge your celeb clientele?
Tara: I’m Deepak Chopra’s personal yoga instructor. We have lots of actors, designers, and other interesting types that come through Strala, including Mariel Hemingway, Brooklyn Decker, and Langley Crisman to name a few.

Rue La La: Any funny yoga stories?
Tara: Oh, so many. I think it’s normal in some studios but we’ve had a few groaners at Strala. The people who come to Strala aren’t used to people making noise in class so when others start to moan and sigh audibly there were for sure quite a few chuckles. And OMG speedos. Wow. And guys with too-short shorts - not ok.

Rue La La: What’s a great before-yoga snack?
Tara: All that twisting and turning works best on an empty stomach. If you’re starving before class something simple like a banana can hold you over and stay put in your tummy.

Rue La La: After yoga?
Tara: People usually feel pretty great after yoga, which leads to healthy food choices. Your senses are also heightened so food tastes better – bonus! If it’s dinnertime, a big salad with lots of veggies is always a nice option. I’m a big fan of homemade pizza too!

Rue La La: How about some advice to all the beginners out there?
Tara: Don’t worry about what shape your body is in during each pose. Focus on the breath and the body will open and strengthen. Patience is the best thing to practice. The more you practice, the easier and more fun it gets.
