The hottest handbag trends? This season, there are a bunch – which obviously leaves one with no choice to buy lots of new bags. Using our Handbag Hit List: Picks in Every Shape & Size Boutique as a guide, let’s take a moment to break a few of the must-have characteristics down (and then let the shopping begin, of course).

Oxblood
Don’t be scared. This term simply refers to the deep red – almost maroon – hue that’s been trending like mad all season. Carry it proudly.

Colorblocking
Your closet’s colorblocking rules? They now apply to bags, too. Do yourself a solid (sorry, couldn’t resist) and get as many geometric swatches of color onto your arm candy as possible.

Structural Shapes
Pique interest with an original, architectural shape, like this rounded satchel. (Trapeze shapes are also spot-on with this trend).

Whether or not you’re waking up for an 8 o’clock class this Friday, you can still lust after the hallmark looks of academia this season – without taking out an extra student loan.

Here’s how:

Stripe accents
An understated stripe updates a simple cardigan without being too overwhelming. Pair a neutral-colored, subtly striped sweater with solid skinnies (think oxblood or hunter green) for a cohesive look.

Collar down
Mercifully, the popped collar trend has long since run its course. Enter the versatile (and far more stylish) detachable collar. Whether or not you go the DIY route, contrast collars are a simple way to either add some edge (leather, stud-accented) or dainty detailing (lace) to a simple cable knit.

Oxford footwear
It’s hard to believe that at one point in my life, my mother had to beg me to wear saddle shoes. Now, I can’t get enough of the restructured canvas and leather Oxford shoe. Paired with dark denim and a sweater vest, I’m ready for the LSAT (almost).

Swap your contacts for chic frames
Why bother wearing contact lenses when there are so many sophisticated optical alternatives out there? Thick, black matte frames or round tortoiseshell glasses will instantly change up your daily look. For an easy, relaxed look, wear with a classic grey or white tee.

The best part of having a photo studio in your company’s building? You can rely on an expert team of stylists to give you on-trend tips. For this season’s staples, I sat down with stylist Alexandra to get the scoop on what every wardrobe needs for fall.

Cozy Knits
“You can wear a cozy knit with everything,” says Alexandra. Dress it up with a cashmere cardigan or down with an oversized sweater. (I love the oversized look with a pair of dark skinnies.)

Silk Blouses
A feminine fall staple, a silk blouse not only feels indulgent, but is also the perfect transitional piece. Easy to layer, it works with skinny jeans on the weekend or with a pencil skirt at work. “I’m all about blouses with tiny prints,” Alexandra says.

Leather
We’ve been obsessing over leather all season, but Alexandra assures us it’s the right attitude to have. “It’s my number one must-have. You need to invest in a good leather jacket,” she says. “You can wear it over jeans, with flats, or over a dress.” Versatile, indeed.

Loafers
“Penny loafers are back!” says Alexandra. “And I especially love them in a metallic.” The menswear-inspired styles are both comfy and casual, making them a perfect shoe for morning commutes and fall foliage excursions.

Our Stylists’ Picks: Head-to-Toe Fall Looks Boutique opens Tuesday, October 16, at 11AM ET.
