AN INTERVIEW WITH ELLE.COM FASHION & SHOPPING EDITOR SYDNEY WASSERMAN

ELLE Editor's Selections: Resort

We must admit, even though winter’s chill just officially set in, we’ve been daydreaming of jetting off to the tropics for a while now. We sat down with ELLE.com Editor Sydney Wasserman to fulfill our island craving with her take on all things Resort.

Rue La La: What trends from this season’s Resort collections are you most excited about?
Sydney: I love the idea of mixing different prints in one bold outfit. It takes a keen eye to be able to clash prints without looking like a clown, but when done right, it’s so chic. I also like the look of a high-waisted short suit – it gives off the air of a high-powered jetsetter. And I can’t forget this season’s color craze: neons.

Rue La La: How have Resort collections evolved over the past several years?
Sydney: Resort has certainly become a predominant season with its own story and look. I think Michael Kors summed it up best when he observed that while Spring and Fall set the trends, Resort is the wardrobe that will be in a woman’s closet.

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE ELLE ASSISTANT EDITOR ON THE CLASSIC MUST-HAVE

ELLE: The Little Black Dress Boutique

ELLE’S Sarah Schussheim considers the little black dress the most important go-to piece in a woman’s wardrobe. With holiday party season inching dangerously closer, we’re thrilled to get her insider advice on the style staple she calls “sexy, empowering, and terrifically versatile all at the same time.”

Rue La La: Do you have a signature style you always find yourself gravitating towards?
Sarah: My go-to silhouettes are a black longsleeve wrap dress and a structured shift dress.

Rue La La: How do you judge if a dress is a score?
Sarah: A good rule of thumb is versatility – the perfect LBD can transition from casual to elegant and back again with a few little tweaks.

ELLEments of Personal Style

For our 25th anniversary, we decided to create a special project that really celebrates what we’re all about here at ELLE – personal style. Our book, The ELLEments of Personal Style, highlights 25 women who really embody what it means to have personal style. These modern fashion icons shared secrets to their personal aesthetic, and gave us a glimpse into what it takes to stay true to their individual style (it’s easier than you think!). We give you an inside look at their homes, their closets, and their everyday (though that word hardly applies) lives.

Here are just a few of my favorite takeaways:

ELLE EDITOR WINIFRED WANG TALKS FALL FOOTWEAR

ELLE Editor's Selections: Fall Boots

The boot. It very well could be the most important piece of your fall fashion arsenal. And with such a wide variety to choose from this season, we had ELLE Editor Winifred Wang hand-pick her favorite styles for our ELLE Editor’s Selections: Fall Boots Boutique (opens September 16 at 11AM ET). Here, she dishes on ways to rock every type of boot this season – and kick your look up a notch.

Rue La La: This season, with boots of every height, from ankle booties to over-the-knee, how do you decide which height to wear with each look?
Winifred: It’s all about playing with proportions. If you’re wearing over-the-knee, I wouldn’t go too short on the skirt or dress for risk of looking a bit tart-y. But, you can go a bit shorter with knee-high boots.

ELLE Editor's Selections

Summer Uniform
Summer requires an easy, go-to uniform. If I had to choose my top five must-haves of the season, I’d want a cross-body, pared-down messenger bag, a menswear belt, a pair of aviator sunglasses, an oversized gold watch, and a pair of utility booties. I’m thinking “utility” in terms of color this season, too – clothes and accessories in tones like beige, camel, army green, and grey look simple and effortless. Surf-inspired wear also feels fresh and fun for the summer months. Embrace tie-dyes or watercolor printed sandals – infusing color into your look feels right if it has more of sun-washed, surf aesthetic.

BY WHITNEY PORT

The debut of my collection on Rue La La feels like a dream. I have loved fashion ever since I was a little girl. One of my earliest memories is working behind the scenes in my dad’s warehouse, ticketing garments and folding sweatshirts. So when I landed an internship at Women’s Wear Daily, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. From there, I worked for amazing publications like Teen Vogue, where I got to see my first fashion show (DKNY Jeans) at Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles.

ELLE Black & White

Black and white are my personal staples. As a New York City girl, black has always been part of my uniform (for work and play). If you were to take a peek inside my closet, these two colors would stand out more than any other. They’re an integral part of history (books have been written about the legendary chicness of Truman Capote’s 1966 Black & White Ball), and fashion right now (I adored the first ten looks at Riccardo Tisci’s spring 2010 Givenchy show). But it’s the cool combinations and unique twists you can give these shades that really bring them to life and make them feel modern.

Cut is everything
Black and white are two of the most versatile colors. They always look crisp, and can easily go from fancy (the classic LBD) to laid-back (white oversize tee paired with basic black mini). With simple pieces, it’s all about the cut. Select well-tailored pieces to pair back with more relaxed (yet still refined) separates. A perfectly cut white button-down can completely elevate the look of your favorite jeans.
