The Best-Dressed List: This Week’s Winning Looks

EACH WEEK, OUR FASHION EDITOR DECIDES WHO DESERVES TOP HONORS

Celebrities favored the box clutch this week, pairing the chic handheld accessory with clean silhouettes (but bold details). These three looks, featuring geometric embroidery, three-dimensional folds, and leather accents, are equal parts classic and modern. And of course, they push boundaries in all the right ways.

Best-Dressed List

  1. Camilla Belle looked to Carolina Herrera‘s Spring 2015 Collection for an elegant red look at an event in Hollywood.
  2. Kerry Washington wore an origami-inspired Calvin Klein Collection dress for the 21st Annual Women in Hollywood celebration in Los Angeles. Her best outfit add-on (blue eyeliner) might not be what you’d expect, but she pulled it off with ease.
  3. Michelle Williams was head-to-toe perfection in Louis Vuitton at the opening of the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Edgier than her typical red-carpet fare, the combination of this whimsical-print dress with black platform boots is just right.

Our Men’s Fashion Editor Talks London & Milan

London, Milan, and Paris have concluded their Fall/Winter 2014 menswear shows – and there are a few things I am excited about. And a few I’m not so sure about, too. Here’s a look at both.

Jacket Matchmaker: Outerwear Staples Broken Down by Temp

Some people wear a specific jacket for each season. (Booooring.) Me, on the other hand? I subscribe to the wear-a-new-jacket-every-day method. Yes. Each and every topper has its very own ideal temperature. But don’t feel restricted by these three standbys. Each represents a category all its own.

Get the Look: Jennifer Lawrence at the 2011 Oscars

Before she was the object of a million girl crushes, we knew Jennifer Lawrence as that blonde bombshell in red at the 2011 Academy Awards. It was her first Oscar nomination, and instead of going the expected route of ultra-glam starlet, Jennifer was surprisingly laid-back, leaving her hair down in beachy waves and keeping the accessories to a minimum.

It’s a look that totally stuck out in my memory. And even better – it’s 100% re-creatable for us non-red-carpet folks. Here’s what you’ll need:

Get the Look

The obvious place to start? With that gorgeous red dress. And we have it here, in our Calvin Klein Collection Women Boutique, opening Wednesday, March 20, at 11AM ET.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein is now an international household name, but how did his company grow to be the fashion house it is today? With passion, skill, and one accidental coat purchase.

What you didn’t know about the man behind the brand:

1. Klein acquired his love of sewing from his seamstress grandmother.

2. He attended the High School of Art and Design in New York City and later went on to graduate from the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in 1962.

3. He spent five years as an apprentice in a coat and suit house on Seventh Avenue before starting his own company with his childhood friend and financial backer, Barry Schwartz.

4. The first order for his outerwear line was obtained purely by accident when a coat buyer got off on the wrong floor of a hotel and stumbled upon Klein’s workroom. She ended up placing a $50,000 order, and the rest, as they say, is history.

5. TIME magazine named him one of the 25 most influential Americans in 1996.

Corporate Survival 101

Tips and tricks for the modern businessman

Unknown

6AM: Early morning run. Resolutions aren’t so hard to keep when the music (literally) plays to your own beat.

7AM: Choose a room-commanding power suit (just follow GQ’s tips for each body type) and remember to add accessories. Cuff links and accent socks go a long way.

8AM: Grab a cup of coffee and get to the office early to crush it.

9:30AM: Client meetings all morning. Although this is run-of-the-mill, don’t forget to brush up on your meeting skills to keep things running smoothly.

12PM: Conduct a meeting with senior management. Just don’t forget the fundamentals of business.

1PM: Lunch with the guys. Get away from the office for a quick bite, a walk, anything to help you clear your mind for an hour or so. Studies show that leaving your cube helps you think outside the box.

2PM: Take a client call and work on proposals and paperwork. This time also usually includes tweeting. That’s right – businessmen tweet, too.

6PM: Happy hour with coworkers and dinner on the town. Swap your office attire for a more casual button-down before heading out (yes, this requires planning ahead). Go for something with a fun, printed cuff to stand out from the sea of suits.

Our Workplace Warriors: Men’s Suiting Essentials Boutique opens Saturday, January 12, at 11AM ET.

Calvin Klein Spring Preview

Hurricane Sandy may have delayed the Calvin Klein Spring 2013 Preview by a few weeks, but the show (make that presentation) went on as planned at the end of November and was – as always – an event to remember.

Last year marked the debut of the ck one color cosmetics line. This time around, the focus was squarely on the clothes, denim, accessories, and underwear.

Models posed prettily amid a structure billed as “a modernist house constructed of black frames,” which was “filtering light and casting shadows within a pure, all-white setting” while guests walked around enjoying tumblers of OJ and breakfast nibbles. The black frames reminded me of very chic prison cells, especially in conjunction with the bunker-like benches and graphic, black-and-white stripes (a huge trend for spring) worn by many of the models.

There were also a lot of 007-worthy pale grey suits and short-sleeved button-downs (for the gents), as well as colorblocked trousers and painterly print separates (for the ladies). Pale denim; sleek swimwear; chunky, heeled sandals; and handheld, fold-over bags completed the picture.

Worn beneath everything, of course, was Calvin Klein’s famous underwear, including the new Calvin Klein Concept line constructed from seamless, high-tech performance fabric.

On the way out, instead of the usual goodie bag, guests were offered their choice of a cropped denim jacket or a pair of sunglasses. Calvin Klein for everyone!
