For fishtail braids: Forgo a hair elastic next time you sport a relaxed braid. Instead, tie the ends of your plaited hair together and slide a bobby pin upward into the knot.

For your photo ID: Renewing your license or passport? Angle your face directly toward the lens – and skip lip gloss, which can catch the light in a strange way.

For makeup removal: Be sure to pre-cleanse before using an actual cleanser. Wipes, water, or cleansing oils will do, preventing the day’s cosmetics and dirt from seeping into open pores.

I’d like to let you know that, at this point in my adult life, I’ve mastered the side braid, the pigtail braid, the fishtail braid, and the French braid. Before you congratulate or humiliate me, I’d also like to let you know – I truly thought that was half decent. Until I stumbled on this hair manual: Braids, Buns, and Twists!

Braid, Buns, & Twists: Christina Butcher

In it, braidmaster Christina Butcher proves that there are, in fact, more than four ways to braid one’s hair. And gives step-by-step directions as proof.

Seriously, this woman’s hair is gorgeous. So feel free to go crazy and try all 82 styles. If that’s aggressive, simply pop over to NYLON have a go at the Grecian braid. Then report back. My repertoire needs a little padding.

Bring on the makeup and hair brushes. Your beauty regime should change with the season.

1. Red. Oxblood. Burgundy. Every set of lips deserves a trip to the dark side.

2. The cat-eye is coming back strong, and we’re all about it. Meow.

3. Some of these braids are a little too intricate for our skill level, but we can definitely manage the basics.

4. It’s possible to wear blue eye shadow without looking like Mimi from The Drew Carey Show. We promise.

5. Drop the tweezers. Strong eyebrows are in. And so are gold ones (seriously).

The beginning of spring is just one day away, and even though there’s still a chill in the air (or a few inches of snow, if you’re in Boston), I can’t wait to say hello to a new season of hair trends. From loose waves to sleek ponytails, these are the styles to try out over the next few months.

BLG-1344 Pretty Talk Spring Hair Trends

1. Braids
Whether it’s a slightly undone fishtail or a few small plaits tied into a ponytail, spring is all about the braid. Try it on busy mornings for a put-together look in about 10 seconds flat.

2. Low Ponytails
The most low-maintenance look of the season (or, ever), the low ponytail was all over the spring/summer 2013 runways. Part your hair down the center and keep it sleek, or leave it loose all around.

3. Super Straight
Fine-haired girls, rejoice! Your naturally pin-straight locks are in for spring. For those of us without sleek strands, warm up those flat irons (not before spraying your hair with heat protector, of course).

4. Loose Waves
There’s nothing more romantic than soft, loose waves, and thankfully this style is here to stay. Let the salty ocean naturally wave your strands, or curl your hair then brush it out before spritzing (lightly) with hairspray.

5. Hair Accessories
Seen on the runways of FENDI, Chanel, and Dolce & Gabbana, hair baubles are a total must-do. From oversized pearls that amp up a low bun to colorful head scarves perfect for less-than-stellar hair days, this trend brings the fun back to hair styling.
