I’m a firm believer that you can never have too many boots (just ask my closet). But if you have to choose just a few, these are the three styles no winter wardrobe should go without.

Snow Boots
A must-have for après-ski activities (just pair with leggings and a chunky knit sweater), these boots are also lifesavers on snowy New England commutes.

Riding Boots
A horseback riding staple, you don’t have to be an equestrienne to rock these classic English-style boots. For best results, opt for a pair in rich camel or black patent leather.

Booties
Say hello to your new best friend. From skinny jeans and tights to cocktail dresses with bare legs, booties literally go with everything. Tip: For a casual look, try rocking them with scrunched-up socks.

ELLE EDITOR WINIFRED WANG TALKS FALL FOOTWEAR

The boot. It very well could be the most important piece of your fall fashion arsenal. And with such a wide variety to choose from this season, we had ELLE Editor Winifred Wang hand-pick her favorite styles for our ELLE Editor’s Selections: Fall Boots Boutique (opens September 16 at 11AM ET). Here, she dishes on ways to rock every type of boot this season – and kick your look up a notch.

Rue La La: This season, with boots of every height, from ankle booties to over-the-knee, how do you decide which height to wear with each look?
Winifred: It’s all about playing with proportions. If you’re wearing over-the-knee, I wouldn’t go too short on the skirt or dress for risk of looking a bit tart-y. But, you can go a bit shorter with knee-high boots.

Rue La La: What’s your boot obsession right now?
Winifred: I love wedge booties. They’re so comfortable and they give you height, plus, they’re super versatile. They look great with all silhouettes – skinny jeans, flared, and also great with dresses and skirts.

Rue La La: Some of us live in boots and comfort is key. Any hints for knowing if a boot will be comfy for the long haul?
Winifred: For high-heeled boots, a good platform always helps, and a thicker heel. But flat heels are best for walking.

Rue La La: Talk to us about color.
Winifred: You can never go wrong with brown and black, but nude and lighter neutral tones (greys, beige, camel, etc.) are a new favorite of mine!

Rue La La: How do you like to style tougher, rocker-style boots?
Winifred: I like to contrast with cute skirts and dresses.

Rue La La: We’re loving the military trend right now. What boots go best with that look?
Winifred: I would go with something with a heel. If you wear a flat boot, the look can become a bit too utilitarian.

Rue La La: We have a lot of stylish people in our office. What boots are best for the workplace?
Winifred: Honestly, whatever is comfortable and makes you feel confident when you’re wearing them. But I recommend a heel rather than flat.

Rue La La: Are over-the-knee boots still in style?
Winifred: Absolutely! They look great over skinny jeans and also with dresses and skirts that aren’t too short. You only want to see a little bit of skin.

Rue La La: Can we still make our peep-toe boots work for fall?
Winifred: Yes – pair them with textured or opaque tights. Tights are a great way to dress up a more casual boot – I’m loving lace tights right now.

Rue La La: Socks with boots. Really?
Winifred: I love pairing riding boots with shorts with a cute knee-high sock peeping out.

Rue La La: If you could only wear one style of boots for the rest of the fall, what would they be?
Winifred: Over-the-knee boots - I still love them! I always feel so confident when wearing them.

Our ELLE Editor’s Selections: Fall Boots Boutique opens Tuesday, September 14 at 11AM ET.
