Whether you’re entertaining out-of-towners for the holidays or looking to spruce up your own sleeping space, follow these easy at-home tips to create a bedroom that’s all about relaxation.

1. Make the bed. It may sound obvious, but if you’re anything like me, you know how temping it can be to throw that comforter over a pile of jumbled sheets and call it a day. Get into the habit of making the bed right after you brush your teeth, and after a long, tiresome day, it will feel as if housekeeping stopped by to tuck in your covers.

2. Stick with one color palette, & upgrade your thread count. Nothing feels more like a hotel room than crisp, white, freshly washed linens, but a soothing sky blue or neutral tone will have the same stress-relieving effect. And if there’s one thing to splurge on in the bedroom, it’s the sheets (not the TV). Up that thread count, or choose a luxury cotton like Egyptian or Supima.

3. Fresh flowers. We don’t often think of buying flowers if we’re not entertaining or greeting someone special, but a freshly cut bouquet perched on a bedside table or vanity circulates oxygen and heightens the room by adding color and pleasing aromas.

4. Snack fridge & breakfast tray. If space allows, designate a small area in your bedroom for these little luxuries. Store late-night snacks or a bottle or two of wine in a mini fridge, or have a breakfast-in-bed tray on hand for lazy Sunday mornings.

5. Ample lighting & blackout curtains. Lighting is key to any satisfactory hotel room. Floor lamps, desk lamps, reading lamps – there’s no such thing as too many. Install dimmers to adjust the mood and blackout curtains to ensure a restful sleep. Quick tip: Hang the curtains from the ceiling instead of the window frame (just make sure they’re long enough to sweep the floor). This gives the room a grand illusion of high ceilings.

6. Photos & memorabilia. Hotels often provide local magazines and guidebooks to help guests feel at home in a unfamiliar place. To build a connection with your space, adorn bedside tables with framed pictures, one wall with a favorite painting, and shelves with beloved books. Choose these pieces selectively – a hotel should be an escape from chaos and clutter, not a haven for it.

7. Move the furniture. Every so often, shift the bed to a different wall or move the dressers and side tables. For a split second when you open your eyes in the morning, you’ll forget where you are. (Which is, of course, the coolest feeling ever.)

The hotel stay is one of the best, but often overlooked, parts of travel or vacationing. After a long day of sightseeing, soaking up rays, or networking at a conference, there’s nothing better than returning to a clean, stylish hotel room and slipping cozily between fresh sheets.

It’s not difficult to come home to such comfort in daily life. Besides completing the obvious (yet easy-to-neglect) basic household chores, use these tips to recapture that pristine hotel feeling – without getting on a plane.

Basic, Neutral Linens
Outfit your bed with a neutral or white duvet and sheets. Stick to the basics, and your bedroom will feel bright, neat, and inviting – three major perks of the hotel vibe. Also, stock your bathroom with tidy, matching towels to keep it looking immaculate.

Lots (And We Mean Lots) Of Pillows
Though I shove aside at least half the pillows on hotel beds before catching Zs, I appreciate their chic, classy appearance. Mix it up with varying (but complementary) sizes, textures, and patterns for a serious bedroom upgrade.

Furniture Reboot
To give your space a grand, serene appearance, invest in a large armoire and conceal your TV inside. Or, consider placing a pedestal table and chairs in a corner of your bedroom – it’s much more relaxing to take in the morning paper and a coffee when you’re lounging in comfort.

Fresh Flowers
Immediately brighten up any room by adding a vase of fresh flowers (or a living plant – white orchids are my favorite) to your nightstand or tabletop. Though this is easier in spring and summer, mums are a welcome treat during the off-season.

Pint-Sized Goodies
Who doesn’t love those adorable mini lotions and pillow chocolates? Pick up a few fancy travel-sized shampoo and conditioner bottles for guests to use – or just to switch up your tub décor. Keep the chocolates in a crystal dish (rather than on your pillow) to add sparkle and class.

Get started on hotel-ing out your home and visit The Rue Sleep-In: Whit & Alex, Villa 408, & coza Boutique, opening Tuesday, October 23, at 8PM ET.

Like in fashion, everyone has a sleeping style all their own. I, for one, can’t get some good shut-eye without an abundance of super-soft blankets and pillows at my disposal, while others may opt for a more simple approach. In honor of all the diverse sleepers out there, this quiz answers that burning question – what style of bedroom is perfect for you?

What’s your pre-sleep routine?

No routine – I hit the hay when my eyes begin to droop.

If my teeth are brushed and my face is washed, I’m good to go.

First I apply my softening face mask, then I brush my hair 10 times, and then…

Describe your dream vacation accommodations.

It’s all about location – the hotel is just for sleeping.

A quaint bed-and-breakfast with tons of personality.

Five-star resort, complete with room service (and a spa on-site wouldn’t hurt).

What do you look for in your ideal sheets?

Low-maintenance cleaning is key for me.

Flannel – I’m all about warmth.

Luxe textures. The softer, the better.

Your nightstand houses:

An alarm clock, and that’s about it.

My clock, bedside lamp, and a stack of books I’ve been meaning to get to.

Family pictures, my favorite scented candles, a sleeping mask, and a vase of fresh flowers.

My ideal Sunday morning calls for:

Sleep, sleep, and more sleep.

Lounging in bed with a magazine and cup of coffee.

Rise and shine – I’m due for a mani/pedi before brunch.

Mostly 1s – Low-Key Lounger: You’re not one for bedding extravagance – sleeping comes easily for you whether cocooned in your bed or under a throw on the couch. Your bedroom has a certain monochromatic charm, and you’re all about simple. Still, don’t be afraid to spring for extra touches (like throw pillows and patterned blankets) – think of them as an added bonus. After all, who couldn’t use a little extra luxe?

Mostly 2s – Serene Sleeper: Somewhere happily between too-low and too-high maintenance, you know the bedroom should be a sanctuary, but you don’t sacrifice function or comfort, either. For you, neutral tones and patterns, with a dramatic pop of color thrown in (sheets, pillows – whatever), will create the perfect at-home haven.

Mostly 3s – Dramatic Dozer: They say go big or go home, but you? You go big for the home, too. Your room should showcase your bold personality, so vibrant colors, patterns, and furnishings are right up your alley. Load up on contrasting patterned pillows and spare blankets in a range of colors – they are the perfect way to bring your personality into the bedroom.

Now that you’ve found your perfect style, put that knowledge to work. Check out The Rue Sleep-In: Whit & Alex, Villa 408, & coza Boutique, opening Tuesday, October 23, at 8PM ET.
