As summer approaches, the air changes – and our skin goes into its routine seasonal shock. Dark sun spots. Red pimples (curse the humidity). Freckles appearing as if from nowhere. And that natural, barely there look you were aiming for turns in to a cakey mess with the over-application of ivory concealers, nude foundations, and white powders.

Enter: The Color Correction Compact. The age-old theory is that the colors opposite each other on the color wheel cancel each other out. Here’s how it works.

1. Assess your face in the mirror and identify the areas that require coverage.

Red spots: pimples or rosacea

Brown spots: sun spots or scars

Purple or blue spots: veiny eyelids or circles under eyes

Orange spots: freckles

2. Use a color corrector liquid or powder compact (or both, depending on the severity of your spots) to dab away blemishes with their color opposites.

Hint: Less is more. The advantage of this technique, as opposed to using cover-up, is that these colors disguise the blemishes completely. Try not to paint it on.

3. Use an allover white face powder after you color correct and before applying bronzer or blush.

No matter how careful you are, eventually that pressed powder becomes just thin enough to crack into a million pieces. Maybe it spent the night in the car when it was negative 12 degrees out, or you left it in your checked bag by accident (dreaded baggage handlers). Or perhaps, like me, you’re a klutz, and you’re constantly dropping things.

Before you toss that can’t-leave-the-house-without-it bronzer in the trash, check this out. A couple of drops of rubbing alcohol, a few dabs with a spoon, and voilà – your once-on-its-last-legs powder has two more weeks to live.

Tip: If there’s not enough powder left to re-press (or if it’s on its third drop), scrape it out of the compact, dice it up with a sharp knife, and pour it into a smaller mineral powder container.

I’ll admit it: I’m clearly not a morning person. I like sleeping in more than anything else, which means it’s always a sprint to get out the door on time. So when I only have ten minutes to spare – with my hair in a messy bun on the top of my head and my makeup undone – having a go-to, super-quick beauty routine is a life (and time) saver. Below, some tips for a flawless look – sans hours of prep.

1. Do some of the work at night.
Allure suggests washing and conditioning your hair before bed, so it’s ready to go in the morning. If it needs a little extra help, use dry shampoo at the roots to refresh strands. And if you have dry, sensitive, or normal skin, they also advise only washing your face at night, then using a facial wipe before applying the day’s moisturizer with SPF.

2. Ten minutes is all you need in the morning.
Figure out what your must-have beauty products are, then decide which ones will make the biggest impact within the littlest amount of time (ten minutes, tops). Five products I swear by? BB cream (moisturizer, primer, and foundation all in one!), bronzer, eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss.

3. Keep your everyday makeup accessible.
If you’re prone to the early-morning frenzy, keep your everyday makeup in a separate spot or pouch. It will eliminate minutes spent rummaging for the eyeliner you’re looking for. Allure also suggests trying creamy formulas that can be applied without using a brush, or stocking up on multitasking products that can be used on cheeks and lips (like stains and cream blushes).

4. Bring your beauty bag to the office for touch-ups.
Once you’re done applying your makeup, zip up the pouch and toss it in your work tote. That way, if you need any touch-ups during the day, you’ll be all set.

We may not be experts in astrology or the moon’s position, but we do know style alignment. And in forecasting the next month, here’s what’s in store for you.

Aquarius
What’s life without a little mystery? This month, experiment with wearing sultry underpinnings beneath your everyday uniform and revel in knowing something the world doesn’t – and in the extra boost of confidence that inevitably follows.

Pisces
Spring is in the air (well, according to Punxsutawney Phil), so that means it’s time to start thinking Pantone® colors, eye-catching prints, and everything lace (just don’t take the plunge until the snow clears).

Aries
Warmer days are looming (and so is a packed social calendar). The best plan of attack? Start shopping the sale racks for winter steals and the fresh spring collections for a personally curated look that transitions without missing a beat – or a credit card payment.

Taurus
Last spring was all about pleats and peplum, but this year? Quit playing it safe and go for a more daring trend (crop top, anyone?) – you might like what you discover.

Gemini
The last-minute party invite: we all secretly love the drama, but how to get event-ready? Touch up your makeup with whatever’s on hand (mascara can double as eyeliner), let your hair down (literally, then give it a tousle, too), and get ready to schmooze.

Cancer
Counteract any wayward emotions this month with the secret recipe that cures all: one venting session, two new statement necklaces (two-for-one deals totally count), and a batch of these three-ingredient brownies that are mostly Nutella. Repeat as needed.

Leo
Acknowledgement for your hard work is always appreciated – but you know what’s better? The view of a perfectly organized closet filled with all the favorite springtime pieces you’ve been missing all winter long.

Virgo
Rumor has it it’s healthy to express yourself, so what are you waiting for? Snag that screaming-yellow hobo you’ve had your eye on and start communicating.

Libra
Now is not the time to be lazy. Add an accent wall to the bedroom (like, today), rock a powerfully printed jean in public, and wrap that hostess gift you’ve been harboring in the closet. Ready, set, go.

Scorpio
It’s practically a fact that if you put positivity out there, you get it right back. And what’s more positive than an impromptu vacation to a sun-drenched beach? Exactly.

Sagittarius
The fashion stars are aligning, and that can only mean one thing: NYFW. Being the social creature you are, it’s only natural that you drape yourself in a fur vest, don pointy-toe pumps, and throw a party for all 54 runway shows.

Capricorn
Your newly discovered enthusiasm is inspiring to everyone around you – particularly your best friend, since you convinced her she just had to have those Missoni pumps with matching… everything.

Catch up on last month’s style forecast, and never miss a fashion beat.

Confession: I rarely wash my hair every day. I’ve experimented with a few different store-bought brands of dry shampoo over the years, and while I’ve enjoyed the results, I could definitely do without the price tag (as well as all the additional chemical ingredients). Forgo washing and blow-drying your hair on day two and cash in on some extra minutes of beauty sleep with the help of a few common household supplies and this homemade dry shampoo recipe.

What you’ll need:
• 1/2 cup baking soda
• 1/2 cup whole grain oatmeal
• Sprig of dried lavender or 10 – 15 drops lavender essential oil (or any scent of your choice)
• Food processor
• Small jar with airtight lid
• Old makeup brush
• Fine-tooth comb

How to do it:
1. Combine the baking soda and oatmeal together in a food processor and grind until they form a fine powder.
2. Add the dried lavender or essential oil and mix well.
3. Scoop mixture into a small jar for storage.
4. Part your hair into three sections and use the makeup brush to lightly dust the mixture onto each section’s roots.
5. Work the fine-tooth comb from root to tip to brush out any excess powder.

The holiday season is a bit of a conundrum to me – a time when glee and glutton go hand in hand, but you’re expected to look ravishing in gloriously fun sequined dresses the day after you’ve feasted on three (totally worth it) servings of the best turkey you’ve ever eaten in your life.

If only we had a magic button that made enjoying all of the season’s treats (and looking gorge in that Christmas party dress) as easy as pie, huh? Unfortunately, I’ve yet to find said button. Instead, read on for ways to “fake” your most ravishing self for the season’s many RSVPs. Don’t forget – half of it is in the confidence.

Get a blowout. Yes, you can do your own hair, but a professional blowout will last through an entire night’s worth of pictures. So worth it. Pop into a blow-dry-only spot like Blo Blow Dry Bar (in seven states and Canada) and drybar (in six states) before your event, and emerge happy.

Freshen up your makeup. Get your makeup done – for free – at a store like Sephora or Bloomies. It’s suggested that you purchase a product after, but not required. Don’t want to schlep to the store? Try a bold cat eye and red lip.

Go bronze. It’s no secret that a tan makes you look instantly slim. Skip the bed and try airbrush, or pick up one of my favorite products: LORAC’s Body Bronzing Luminizer. It goes on like a lotion, washes off in the shower, and gives that covetable, just-back-from-St.-Tropez bronze we all crave.

Choose red. Black? So slimming. And so safe. Red screams confidence, and you’ll be amazed by how good you feel when you slip it on.

Try draping. Expertly draped dresses are an easy way to hide problem spots, and look Grecian-goddess pretty while you’re at it.

Wear SPANX®. Did I even have to mention this? Their Tight-End Tights® make you look a size smaller, I swear.

Pick the right heels. Wearing black tights? Try black heels. Bare legs? Choose nude pumps. Your gams will look plenty lean – and miles long.
