She has us laughing until we cry, sniffing out Air Marshalls and stealing puppies, but this month, Bridesmaids actress Melissa McCarthy gets serious. It turns out, while on the hunt for the ideal Academy Awards gown back in 2012, multiple fashion bigwigs sent her packing.

“Two Oscars ago, I couldn’t find anybody to do a dress for me. I asked five or six designers – very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people – and they all said no,” she tells Redbook. How did the famous actress take the news? Well, by showing up looking nothing short of fabulous. Oh, and launching her own plus-size clothing line.

I’m sure those designers are kicking themselves.

Gone are the days when gowns were the only red-carpet option for women. Sure, we still have Cate Blanchett’s impeccable head-to-toe nude and Lupita’s plunging baby blue. But last night’s awards also saw a sea of tuxes.

Tuxes at the Oscars

The designer of choice? Saint Laurent. Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres wore three different Saint Laurent tuxes. Ellen Page looked edgy and cool dressed in the brand, too. As did Kourtney Kardashian. (Saint Laurent outfitted white-hot Jared Leto as well.)

Of course, Yves Saint Laurent has been a red-carpet staple for years, dressing the likes of Diane Kruger in glamorous gowns. But under the helm of Hedi Slimane, the brand is far more casual.

What would that mean for the women of this year’s red carpet, the public wondered? Thanks to Fashionista, the answer is now clear: suits. “Saint Laurent has become the definitive source for cool-yet-elegant, well-tailored suiting.”

Sounds like awards shows just got a whole lot more comfortable.

This awards season, Matthew McConaughey has been on a roll – and I’m not just talking about his countless nominations for Dallas Buyers Club. He’s received standing ovations for his red-carpet looks, too.

Matthew McConaughey's Red-Carpet Success

British GQ rounded up eleven of the actor’s impressive looks, and from the checked three-piece suit at the London premiere of Dallas Buyers Club to the smoking jacket at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, McConaughey’s wardrobe has been anything but predictable. One common thread, however, seems to be a Dolce & Gabbana label, which is only natural considering he’s the spokesman for its The One cologne

Personally, I think McConaughey will stick with Dolce & Gabbana for the Academy Awards on Sunday – but who knows? Maybe he’ll surprise everyone with another Vivienne Westwood number. Either way, my bet is on him looking good.

Awards season isn’t letting up anytime soon. Next on the list? The Oscars – and when it comes to Academy fashion, we’re totally on board with Hollywood stylist Brad Goreski’s dress predictions.

1. Jennifer Lawrence recently signed on for three more years with Christian Dior. So we all know what she’s wearing.

2. Goreski wants to see Sandra Bullock in Versace, and why not? Gaga isn’t the only girl who can rock it.

3. Claiming with confidence that Cate Blanchett will likely wear Givenchy, we think this stylist may have just have insider information.

4. Lupita Nyong’o has been lighting up the red carpet in American designs. So, Goreski thinks it’s time she works it the Parisian way – in Chanel.

5. We didn’t get a prediction on this one, but we’re putting our money on Amy Adams wearing Ralph Lauren.

Before she was the object of a million girl crushes, we knew Jennifer Lawrence as that blonde bombshell in red at the 2011 Academy Awards. It was her first Oscar nomination, and instead of going the expected route of ultra-glam starlet, Jennifer was surprisingly laid-back, leaving her hair down in beachy waves and keeping the accessories to a minimum.

It’s a look that totally stuck out in my memory. And even better – it’s 100% re-creatable for us non-red-carpet folks. Here’s what you’ll need:

Get the Look

The obvious place to start? With that gorgeous red dress. And we have it here, in our Calvin Klein Collection Women Boutique, opening Wednesday, March 20, at 11AM ET.

New York Magazine: The Cut, recounting an incredibly adorable red carpet explanation from Quvenzhané Wallis:

We Couldn't Have Said It Better

Even though everyone has been buzzing about Jennifer Lawrence, Quvenzhané Wallis totally stole my heart with her Oscar antics and hallmark puppy purse (and I’m sure I’m not alone). Because, seriously – if you’re walking the red carpet, sparkles are the only way to go.

The glamour of the Oscars may be over, but we’ve preserved the best (and perhaps funniest) tweets we read that night.

@dkny: Well Sandra’s certainly been skipping the cupcakes. I wish I could say the same.
Us, too. Our excuse is that we weren’t invited to the Oscars, so what’s a few cupcake calories?

@WhoWhatWear: Can someone give me a bright lip please? Or just a lip? Anyone? Bueller? #peopleoscars
What happened to the trend of bold, bright lipstick? Seriously lacking on the red carpet this year.

@thecoveteur: All we care about is the status of Bradley Cooper’s hair. Cc @ilariaurbinati #tcrealtalk #wallgroupies #Oscars
There was gel. Lots of gel. (Apparently George Clooney was the only one who missed the memo.)

@elementstyle: Someone get Kristen a brush and some enthusiasm for life
And maybe a pair of black-tie crutches.

@refinery29: Going to work out now. Bye. Thanks Jane Fonda.
If we can’t get the workout secrets, can someone give us the number for her doctor?

The Oscars are but a few hours away – and we can hardly wait. After preparing for the viewing party and filling out the ballots, the next best thing (aside from the platters of finger food) is the red-carpet arrivals. So we had to ask: If you were invited to the awards ceremony, what type of gown would you go for?
