‘Tis the season for holiday parties and weekend visits. Meaning, you need to build a stockpile of thank-you gifts for the hosts. Here, our editorial directors weigh in on their favorite finds and the best ways to present them.

Hostess Gifts for the Holidays

“Who doesn’t love fondue? It’s easy, fun, and delicious. Gift a pot with both sweet and savory ingredients to get them started on dinner and dessert. I like cheese paired with focaccia, mini potatoes, or broccoli, and chocolate paired with strawberries, bananas, or angel food cake.” – Jackie, Rue Fashion Editorial Director

“A naturally scented candle can be used in a bedroom, guest room, bathroom, or a home office – and you don’t have to worry about matching it to an interior.  Plus, it’s super easy to wrap. You can simply tie clear cellophane and an orange bow around it to let the already gorgeous packaging shine through.” – Nancy, Rue Living Editorial Director

An eye roll. A burrito. Popping bubbly. None of these can currently be expressed with emoji. But mid-2015 the Unicode Consortium – the folks in charge of creating the beloved illustrated language – might release all three in a set of up to 37 new designs.

Candidates for the Unicode 8.0 release have been announced on The Unicode Blog, including a delicious little taco and a highly requested unicorn face. Whether or not each of these additions makes the final cut, we excitedly await this long-overdue refresh.

Does decanting vino really make that big of a difference? The answer is a resounding yes (and it doesn’t have to be a $100 bottle of Bordeaux). Exposing a young red or full-bodied white to oxygen will amp up flavor. And that 10-year-old bottle you’ve been saving for a big occasion definitely has some sediment it could do without. So transform your wines with these need-to-know basics.

For small spaces: Make your tiny apartment feel bigger with a unified color palette or aesthetic – that way rooms flow together and create the illusion of a larger environment.

For leftover vino: Freeze any remaining wine in an ice cube tray. Next time you make a sauce, glaze, or stew, pop in a cube for an extra hit of flavor.

For a no-cost craft project: Inject a bit of nature into your home with a DIY doorstop. Grab a sizable stone and cover it with your choice of paint (think a matte black or neon hue).

Pop art sculpture. The desirable Hermès Birkin bag. What happens when these two icons unite? One hot-ticket auction item comes up for grabs.

Jeff Koons Birkin Sculpture

Artist Jeff Koons customized Birkins and worked them into one-of-a-kind sculptures, which will sell to the highest bidders over the weekend in New York City. But these aren’t your average Birkins (as if such a thing even exists). Notable personalities donated the bags for this project, including Sofia Coppola, Marc Jacobs, and Diane von Furstenberg.

The winners of these covetable pieces won’t just have new décor for their living rooms – they’ll also be benefiting Project Perpetual, an art philanthropy that supports the United Nations Foundation.
