Case of the Blues: A Look at This Season’s Hottest Eye-Shadow Hue

After my middle school days, I swore off blue eye shadow. I had a heavy hand with my makeup brush and it just wasn’t doing me any favors. But now, blue shadow is making a triumphant comeback after being featured in both the Fall and Spring Fashion Weeks – and this time around, I’m determined to wear it right.

Want Frizz-Free Curls? Try Plopping

Calling all curly haired girls – frizz-free ringlets are in your future. According to Refinery29, all you have to do is plop. Which is exactly what we thought. But read on.

Plop for Frizz-Free Curls

  1. Start by laying out a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel on your bed. (Not a regular towel – it will just add to the frizz.)
  2. After you’ve showered, flip your head over and place your curls on the tee or towel slowly.
  3. Grab the ends of the towel or tee and twist so you have two Pippi Longstocking–esque twists on the sides of your head.
  4. Pull the twists to the back of your neck and secure by tying them together or using clips.
  5. Leave for 30 minutes as hair dries.
  6. Remove tee or towel and add a leave-in conditioner or light oil to seal the cuticles.

Voilà – post-plopping frizz-free curls.

Introducing EE Cream: Because Skincare Needed More Letters

Okay, let’s run through this quickly. First, there was this thing called cream. It existed alone, in all its noncomedogenic glory, and hey, it did the job. Then the skincare world alphabetized – via Asia – and in came cult favorites BB cream, CC cream, and, alas, DD cream. With no sign of stopping. (Flashback to first-grade cursive.)

Skincare Letters

The newest letter pairing – EE cream – stands for “extra exfoliation” and is set to hit the market under the guise of Previse Skincare’s EE MarineGranules this March. It’s apparently a “botanical-based marine mousse” packed with bamboo stem powder and other ingredients our lowly creams never would have dreamed of.

If anyone wants to get ahead on the creation of  ZZ (“zero zits”) cream, ping me – we should start sourcing intergalactic ingredients now.

Hide That Hangover: The Morning-After Makeover

Odds are, you’re going out tonight. And odds are, you’re going to have one sip of champagne too many – just accept it already and have fun. You can hate yourself in the morning when you’re peeling yourself out of bed to attend New Year’s Day brunch. Hey, at least you don’t have to work.

The Morning-After Makeover

But still, you want to put on a good face for your first outing of 2014, right? Well, lucky for you, Refinery29 has recruited makeup artist James Vincent to dish out a few tips for making sure those telltale bags under your eyes go completely unnoticed. And honestly, from a few spritzes of toner to a little topical vitamin C, it’s pretty amazing what a difference his makeup tricks can make. Simply take note before you go out, and then order up that Bloody Mary in the morning. Hair of the dog, people.

Forget Nail Art: Lipstick Is 2014′s Beauty Must

Sure, nail art may be the beauty trend that grabs the attention, but all you have to do is look down at your chipped polish to see that it’s getting old. The beauty trend with real staying power? Lipstick.

Lipstick-pic

The Huffington Post reports that more women than ever bought lip products in 2013 (I know I probably hauled in more than my fair share). So when Laura Weinstein, the vice president of marketing for the brands Sally Hansen and NYC New York Color declares, “Lip really is the new nail,” I’m inclined to believe her.

If our lips are about to get hit with the same level of attention that our nails got in the last couple years, who knows what’s in store. Colors we’ve never tried before? Stick-on prints? Glitter overlays? For me, it might just be the year I try orange. Or purple. Or even black if I’m feeling really adventurous.
