Trends from the Capitol – Of Panem, That Is

I’d guess that fashion lovers, myself included, are the second-largest group bolstering The Hunger Games, following the tween market. The movie franchise caught my attention with its physics-defying fashion designer Cinna (played by Lenny Kravitz), Alexander McQueen gown cameos, and Katniss’s oh-so-cool cable knit scarf. Well, it turns out the series’ fictional setting, Panem, is just as fascinated with its citizens’ wardrobe choices as I am. The evidence? Capitol Couture, an online fashion magazine from the ruling district.

A clever marketing ploy for the upcoming November 21 release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, Capitol Couture covers the latest trends in Panem using pieces from real-world designers. Front and center are “living portraits” of characters Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and Johanna Mason (Jena Malone), both wearing all white as part of a Panem campaign. Peeta sports a shirt and shoes designed by Maison Martin Margiela with a paper collar from David Mason, while Johanna accessorizes with Alexander Wang shoes and hand-carved marble bangles by Chen Chen and Kai Williams.

When the fashion is this good, it’s easy to get mentally trapped in Panem. Next time I need an escape from reality, I’ll be perusing Capitol Couture for styling tips from the future.

From Red Soles to Red Toes: Meet Christian Louboutin Beauté

One of the biggest names in shoes has officially introduced his moniker to the beauty business. Christian Louboutin Beauté, a long-rumored extension of the shoe designer’s label, just launched with a flagship red nail polish leading the way. Titled “Rouge Louboutin,” the varnish is packaged in a faceted glass bottle with a calligraphy-inspired cap, playing off the eight-inch heel height of his tallest shoe, the Ballerina Ultima. A stiletto-shaped bottle is an obvious choice, but it’s also a nod to Louboutin’s first red soles in 1992, which were literally painted with nail polish.

Not unlike a pair of his coveted red soles, “Rouge Louboutin” doesn’t come cheap. Currently the only hue available, the signature crimson shade will run you $50. Start contributing to your Louboutin fund – 30 more colors will debut on August 31. Until I can afford my own pair, I’ll settle for sporting red on my toes instead of my soles.

Are Hipsters Fading? eBay Data Thinks So

According to Esquire, eBay’s sales numbers suggest hipsterdom is on its way out. Razor sales are up 56% (hipster scruff, be gone). Clear-framed glasses are also seeing a new-found sales increase, in lieu of those thick black rims. And the messenger bag? It’s been replaced by the 90s-inspired leather backpack.

The hipster phenomenon Topman even rocked faded boot-cut denim during its Spring and Summer 2015 runways. That’s quite the opposite of skinny jeans if you ask me. But I’m not totally convinced that eBay’s “evidence” of hipster extinction is exactly that. Perhaps our idea of “hipster” is simply being redefined. Or maybe, just maybe, said hipsters have moved on from online auctions to flash sales…

Tailor Talk Decoded: 5 Technical Terms to Know

You’ve been there. Nodding and shifting mechanically as the tailor measures, marks, and pins, without really having a clue as to what he’s doing or saying. And while the tailor probably knows best, it can’t hurt to actually know the terms. Here are a few to make part of your vocab, stat.

BLG-2117_trunk

Bespoke
Rooted in London’s Savile Row, call this a fancy British word for custom-made.

Hem
Simply put, this raw edge of your pant needs to be sewn to prevent unraveling.

Inseam
This is the seam that runs along the inner pant leg, from crotch to ankle.

Taper
Usually in reference to the pant leg, it means that the cut of the fabric narrows toward the ankle.

Vent
That center or double-slit cut in the back of your jacket? This is the name for it.

Looking to step up your tailored look? Our Rue Trunk Show: Men’s Suiting Edition Boutique opened Wednesday, July 23, at 11AM ET.

Barbie Lagerfeld: A Doll You’ll Want to Display

Barbie may be turning 55 this year, but her latest look – a white ponytail – could make you think she’s even older. No, Mattel isn’t releasing a "Granny Barbie." Rather, designer Karl Lagerfeld is collaborating with the toymaker to release a doll in his likeness this fall.

Karl is no stranger to non-fashion collaborations. You may recall his Diet Coke bottle designs from a few years back, and in 2017 he plans to open a hotel in Macau, China.

"Barbie Lagerfeld" will be part of the Collector Series, donning the designer’s signature getup: a black blazer, a white high-collared shirt, black skinny jeans, a necktie, sunglasses, booties, and, from the looks of the illustration, mini fingerless gloves. No word yet on when or where she will launch, but I’m sure countless collectors (and eBay resellers) will be at the ready to buy this petite version of Karl.
