Screen to Shore: Rent Sex and the City’s Malibu Beach House

Remember that steamy scene from the first Sex and the City movie where a depressed Samantha watches rapt from her balcony, mouth stuffed with guacamole, as her lothario next-door neighbor frolics on the beach with his paramour du jour? Or the one where she lies immobile on her kitchen table, covered in sushi? For a pretty penny, you can rent the Malibu mansion where it all unfolded.

The three-level mansion–turned–movie set is available for monthly rental fees of $55,000 or $100,000, depending on time frame. Wondering what that hefty price tag will get you? Multiple balconies, a chef’s kitchen, a wine cellar, maid’s quarters, a two-car garage, a stunning stretch of beachfront, and a little claim to fame, for starters. Nightly antics not included.

Want to play Samantha for the summer? See the official listing here.

A Happy (Foodie) Marriage: Chocolate & Wine Pairings

Wine and chocolate are a match made in heaven – if you know how to pair them. Here, we checked in with our friends at Lindt Chocolate for a little cheat sheet. Read up below, and then get ready to seriously impress friends and family at your next dinner party.

Lindt Excellence Wine & Chocolate Pairing Tips

Tasting Tricks

  1. Start with a lighter wine and pair it with chocolate that has a low cocoa percentage. Then work your way up to bolder wines and extra-dark chocolate.
  2. Always taste the wine and chocolate separately before trying them together.
  3. When pairing: Take a small bite of chocolate, then as the flavor is fading, have a sip of wine. Note how the flavors change and interact with each other.

The Pairings

  1. Chocolate with a hint of sea salt (we recommend trying Lindt Excellence A Touch of Sea Salt) is the perfect match for a light Rosé. The ripe berries and floral notes from the wine complement the sharp tastes of sea salt and dark chocolate.
  2. Full-bodied wines go best with a high cocoa content. Try a rich Cabernet Sauvignon with a dark chocolate like Lindt Excellence 70% Cocoa.
  3. For a combo with a warm burst, pair a spice-infused chocolate (we suggest Lindt Excellence Chili) with a deep Syrah.
  4. Citrus-flavored chocolate (ahem, orange) pairs best with lighter wine, like a crisp Chardonnay. The full fruit flavors balance out the acidity for a smooth, sweet flavor.

Say Cheers to Jayla Siciliano: The Brains Behind Bon Affair

Summer is upon us, which means it’s time to break out chilled wines that pair well with heat and humidity. But uncorking at the park, the beach, and the café can add up in terms of calories, which is precisely what inspired always-active former fashion insider Jayla Siciliano to create Bon Affair, a brand of high-quality, low-calorie wine spritzers. (The best part? They’re loaded with electrolytes.) Here, Jayla talks about finding success with Bon Affair on the TV show Shark Tank and what’s next for her fledgling business.

Rue La La: What’s special about Bon Affair?
Jayla Siciliano: What makes Bon Affair unique is its dry, crisp flavor profile. It’s not sticky-sweet (I try to steer clear of sugar bombs), and it’s great by itself or for making cocktails. I put a full FDA nutritional panel on the bottle so people can read exactly what’s in there.

RLL: What was it like being on Shark Tank?
JS: The exposure from the show has been incredible. And the support from [Shark Tank judge] Mark [Cuban] and his team has been amazing.

Man of Modesty: Kendrick Lamar Buys Low-Priced Home Outside L.A.

Kendrick Lamar may be a red-carpet regular and GQ‘s reigning Rapper of the Year, but it turns out he’s a pretty humble guy in spite of it all. Proof? The 26-year-old rap star recently bought a house in Eastvale, California, which is an hour north of Los Angeles, to the very reasonable tune (in the rap world, anyway) of $523,500.

Lamar’s purchase of the relatively modest, four-bedroom abode flies in the face of the lavishness that’s come to represent mainstream rap, but it’s completely in character for the Compton native. He has talked openly about growing up on welfare, the dangers of materialism, the importance of smart money management, and a rejection of indulgences stereotypical of his industry peers. If the budding superstar’s refreshing message is as well received as his work has been, we likely haven’t seen anything yet. And when it comes to Lamar’s riches, that’s just how he wants it.

Wrinkle Remedy: Smooth Your Bedsheets (Sans Iron)

Pure cotton linens are crisp, breathable, and durable. But without woven-in synthetics or an afternoon of ironing to keep them smooth, they’ll likely turn into a wrinkly mess post-wash. Our advice?

060114_blog

  1. Remove your sheets from the dryer while they’re still slightly damp.
  2. Tuck them in tightly on the bed.
  3. Smooth them out with your hands.

The combination of moisture and tension will remove wrinkles.
