Charles James: One of the Costume Institute’s Most Popular Exhibits

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s recently remodeled (and renamed) Anna Wintour Costume Center has received a burst of foot traffic over the past four months. Why? American couturier Charles James and his inaugural exhibit Charles James: Beyond Fashion. According to a museum spokesperson, the show beat out last year’s Punk: Chaos to Couture and Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations from 2012. More impressively, the ball-gown exhibit is the fifth most popular in the Costume Institute’s 25-year history, ranking behind the Alexander McQueen, Jacqueline Kennedy, Superhero-themed, and Chanel shows.

Oh, and if you haven’t planned a weekend trip to New York City to see the exhibit yet, you have until 5:30PM this Sunday. Since Charles James is not a household name, I recommend reading up in advance.

Glimpse: The New Kid on the Dating-App Scene

Ever wish those awkward Tinder convos weren’t part of the whole modern dating thing? Well, you’re not alone. Meet Glimpse, a just-launched app that connects people on Instagram by using shared hashtags, locations, and events.

You probably never thought that a #YOLO obsession could find you a soul mate, but Glimpse begs to differ, pairing prospective couples that share the same mantrasUnlike other social dating apps, this one helps you find partners with common interests, not just those in the same location.

The best part? Minimal creep factor involved. If anyone wants to strike up a conversation, they’ll need your approval. Once you give the go-ahead, chat away about important things, like the hilarity of that #TBT you posted last week.

If you ask me, this has “newest mobile phenomenon” written all over it. And those #FBF baby pics get the whole embarrassing-photos issue over with right away.

Flash of Genius: Our Latest Travel-Photo Obsession

Have a serious case of wanderlust? Do yourself a favor this AM and head over to Grandpa’s Photos. The website archives a collection of personal travel images taken by “Grandpa” Stephen Clarke, a WWII Air Force navigator and jewelry buyer from Australia. Family members discovered the slides in a cupboard while moving him into a nursing home and, lucky for us, decided to share them. Between the sepia tints, blurred figures, and surreal settings, these nostalgic snapshots are sure to sate those take-me-there Tuesday daydreams. (And spark new ones.)

3 Things You Need to Try, Stat

For your walls: Skip the art gallery and swing by a newsstand instead. Rip out your favorite magazine pages and frame them with brightly hued electrical or washi tape.

For stained nails: Your nails have seen the entire spectrum of polish hues – with discoloration left behind as evidence. Squeeze some whitening toothpaste on an extra toothbrush and scrub away to lift stains.

For a digital detox: You’re in a relationship with your phone. Learn to put it down during a very tempting moment – dining solo! Don’t worry, no one will think you were stood up. Just play it cool and people-watch.

Scarlett Johansson’s New Cropped Cut Makes Its NYC Debut

On Tuesday, a pregnant Scarlett Johansson stepped out in New York City, and her baby bump wasn’t the only new thing she was sporting. The 29-year-old Lucy star premiered her freshly cropped (not to mention bright blonde) hairstyle while strolling the streets of the Big Apple with her fiancé Romain Dauriac.

Although short locks have been spotted all over Hollywood lately, I can’t help but wonder if she’s just getting ready for her next big on-screen project.

From Girls to Peter Pan, Allison Williams Just Doesn’t Want to Grow Up

Here’s a bit of pixie dust to sweeten your morning coffee: actress Allison Williams has been cast as Peter Pan in an NBC live musical production set to premiere on December 4. Sure, Neverland is a far cry from the Girls set in New York, but Allison has eagerly awaited this opportunity since childhood. She even donned a Peter Pan costume as a kid, and posted the proof on Instagram.

Of her upcoming role, she joked: “What could go wrong in a live televised production with simultaneous flying, sword fighting and singing?” On the other end of Allison’s sword, viewers will see the always charming (and sometimes wicked) Christopher Walken in the role of Captain Hook. While it will be tough to rival Walt Disney’s version of the imaginative story, I’ll definitely be tuning in to this star-studded update.

American Apparel Appoints Its First Female Director

American Apparel is no stranger to the news. But one headline that the label hasn’t yet prompted? Its first female director – until now.

On Wednesday, the company appointed Colleen Brown to its board of directors. The former CEO of Fisher Communications, a group of TV and radio stations, Colleen is one of four new members added to the company’s board in the wake of previous CEO Dov Charney’s sexual harassment allegations.

What can we expect from the shift? I, for one, would support a fresh perspective (sans the racy disputes).

Jared Leto: The Internet’s Latest Darling

Last weekend, Thirty Seconds to Mars star Jared Leto posted a picture of himself hugging a tree with the caption, “Tree huggin hippy? Guilty!” And just like that, the Internet went wild, editing the image to make it look like Jared is hugging everything from President Obama’s face to Angelina Jolie’s leg.

Now, a good meme can make your day. But these? They have the potential to make your whole week, especially now that you can create your very own #jaredhugginleto meme on the star’s official website. So congratulations, Jared Leto. You’ve inspired Internet gold. Bravo.

When Harry Met Sally, a Quarter Century Ago

I was only a year old when the movie When Harry Met Sally first debuted on the big screen on July 14, 1989. It’s true, I could barely hold my own bottle. But that didn’t stop me from, years later, sitting down with friends to watch one of the most influential rom-coms in pop culture history. And, yes, we’re still watching.
