Hide That Hangover: The Morning-After Makeover

Odds are, you’re going out tonight. And odds are, you’re going to have one sip of champagne too many – just accept it already and have fun. You can hate yourself in the morning when you’re peeling yourself out of bed to attend New Year’s Day brunch. Hey, at least you don’t have to work.

The Morning-After Makeover

But still, you want to put on a good face for your first outing of 2014, right? Well, lucky for you, Refinery29 has recruited makeup artist James Vincent to dish out a few tips for making sure those telltale bags under your eyes go completely unnoticed. And honestly, from a few spritzes of toner to a little topical vitamin C, it’s pretty amazing what a difference his makeup tricks can make. Simply take note before you go out, and then order up that Bloody Mary in the morning. Hair of the dog, people.

Forget Nail Art: Lipstick Is 2014′s Beauty Must

Sure, nail art may be the beauty trend that grabs the attention, but all you have to do is look down at your chipped polish to see that it’s getting old. The beauty trend with real staying power? Lipstick.

Lipstick-pic

The Huffington Post reports that more women than ever bought lip products in 2013 (I know I probably hauled in more than my fair share). So when Laura Weinstein, the vice president of marketing for the brands Sally Hansen and NYC New York Color declares, “Lip really is the new nail,” I’m inclined to believe her.

If our lips are about to get hit with the same level of attention that our nails got in the last couple years, who knows what’s in store. Colors we’ve never tried before? Stick-on prints? Glitter overlays? For me, it might just be the year I try orange. Or purple. Or even black if I’m feeling really adventurous.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Braids, Buns, and Twists

I’d like to let you know that, at this point in my adult life, I’ve mastered the side braid, the pigtail braid, the fishtail braid, and the French braid. Before you congratulate or humiliate me, I’d also like to let you know – I truly thought that was half decent. Until I stumbled on this hair manual: Braids, Buns, and Twists!

Braid, Buns, & Twists: Christina Butcher

In it, braidmaster Christina Butcher proves that there are, in fact, more than four ways to braid one’s hair. And gives step-by-step directions as proof.

Seriously, this woman’s hair is gorgeous. So feel free to go crazy and try all 82 styles. If that’s aggressive, simply pop over to NYLON have a go at the Grecian braid. Then report back. My repertoire needs a little padding.

Say It Isn’t So: Nail Art Is Over

Brace yourself. Nail art is allegedly over. Go ahead, take a minute to let that sink in. All set? Good. Now, where were we? According to Advertising Age, the nail polish fad is drying up, and fast. In October and November alone, drugstore polish sales have fallen 13 and 10 percent, respectively.

Nail Art Is Over

So, I guess that’s it. I mean, while my Pinterest boards beg to differ, you really can’t argue with numbers. Looks like I’ll be retiring my nail pen and putting away my glitter polish…

The (Confetti) Eyes Have It: A Look at the Glitter Shadow Trend

When it comes to makeup, I’m a less-is-more kind of girl. And while I’m certainly up for a little extra lip color and highlighter for the right occasion (hello, company holiday party), the thought of shellacking my eyelids with glitter is enough to send me hiding behind my shower curtain.

Glitter Eyes

But just when I thought sparkly lids had secured their place in the annals of 80s history, they’re making a comeback. And the new iteration is tasteful enough that I might just try it. According to the beauty buffs at New York Magazine (who got a little help from a pro), the trick to rocking glittery lids without looking silly is to stick with neutral tones like pink and beige – or other shades that complement your eye color – and blend a metal-foil-finish shadow with a regular shadow to keep from going overboard on sparkle. Seems simple enough, right? Here goes nothing.

From Blunt to Side-Swept: A Look at the Big Bang Trend

I’m just going to come out and say it: I’m not a fan of bangs. Even though they’ve been on almost every red carpet and runway this season, it’s just not a look many women can pull off. And it’s definitely not a look this writer can pull off.

A Look at the Bang Trend

Am I jealous of those women with the just-right forehead square footage for little front fringe? You bet. Bettie Page’s blunt bangs. Farrah Fawcett’s feathered ones. Reese Witherspoon’s wispy look. Total envy. So while no, I won’t be taking scissors to my hair anytime soon, I can still appreciate good bangs when I see them – and this list is chock-full of them. I’ll just admire from afar.
