Trash or Treasure? Artist Created Roses Using Shirts

Over the last several years, New York–based artist Carlton Scott Sturgill has built an unusual collection of discarded Ralph Lauren shirts. But rather than dropping them at the nearest thrift store, he turned the haul into an eco-friendly project, creating realistic rose bushes at the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn.

Designed in collaboration with Arts Gowanus and the NY Department of Transportation, Carlton’s “faux garden” features pinstriped and brightly colored roses. The floral sculpture is a bit of a contrast with its surroundings at the canalwhich is famously known as an illegal garbage dumping ground.

Now, I thought I was crafty when I turned a pair of old jeans into “jorts” last summer. After seeing this talented artist turn castoffs into works of art, I found some serious inspiration for my next DIY project. Watch out, Pinterest.

Karl Lagerfeld’s Cat Is a YouTube Sensation

Kick off your morning right meow with a dose of cuteness, delivered by this iPad® video of Karl Lagerfeld’s celebrity cat Choupette. Things we’ve learned from her feature on The Coveteur? Like your average, non-fashion feline, Choupette is also captivated by shiny objects and tissue boxes. But unlike your cat, she has two personal nurses and a Shu Uemura makeup line, and she never meows (because Karl hates it).

Here’s hoping your Friday is as fabulous as Choupette’s everyday life.

The Next Bond Girl? French Beauty Léa Seydoux

You may recognize Léa Seydoux as a frequent star in Prada’s campaigns. And with rumors circling that she signed on as the next Bond girl, expect to see a lot more from this French actress.

This coveted role wouldn’t be Léa’s first experience in film. The 29-year-old has starred in Blue Is the Warmest ColorPrada’s Resort 2012 campaign, the Prada Candy fragrance campaign, and Miu Miu’s Resort 2015 campaign. As for her frequent collaborator, designer Miuccia Prada? She, too, has experience working in the film industry, having crafted costumes for Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby.

The 24th Bond movie won’t begin production for another six weeks, but Léa will undergo costume tests in the meantime. Since she’s rarely seen wearing labels other than Prada or Miu Miu, my fingers are crossed that her wardrobe is designed by Miuccia herself.

At-Home Know-How: 3 Things to Try, Stat

For last year’s down coat: Your puffer is out of summer storage and looks flat as a board. Hang it in the bathroom during a steamy shower to let it reinflate. Or briefly toss it in the dryer with a few clean tennis balls.

For DIY leg warmers: We all have at least one chunky cable-knit sweater that we’ve outgrown. Cut the sleeves off the body and voilà! Homemade leg warmers for your boots.

For your morning coffee: Put butter in it. The pioneer of this “bulletproof” style of coffee claims it offers a daylong buzz (sans dreaded afternoon crash).

A Heritage of Style: The Salvatore Ferragamo Fiamma Bag

We’re constantly turning our attention to the latest It bag, but lately our favorite high-profile fashion houses have been investing in their signature bags – the ones that endure for generations. With its timeless details and sleek leather, the new Fiamma bag from Salvatore Ferragamo is poised to do just that.

blog

Fiamma Ferragamo was the eldest daughter of the revered Italian designer. She expanded the house in the 1990s and even created the first Ferragamo handbag collection. Pulling inspiration from one of her original designs, the Fiamma features a top handle and signature locked flap on a sleek leather satchel silhouette.

The launch of this lust-worthy bag is accompanied by short films featuring famously fashionable mother-daughter pairs. One of the duos, Mariel and Langley Fox Hemingway, discuss their own free-spirted family legacy. Other A-list subjects include Italian royals and Hollywood personalities, each sharing a family bond passed down through generations – something Fiamma Ferragamo would be proud of.

Watch the short films here. Then, check out the Fiamma in our Salvatore Ferragamo Boutique, which opens Saturday, October 11, at 11AM ET.

Michelle Obama Celebrates Fashion (and SPANX®)

Michelle Obama is on a mission to support American fashion – beyond just wearing her favorite labels. Proof? Yesterday, the always-elegant First Lady assembled a roster of big-name designers and 150 design students at the White House for a series of workshops, panels, and networking events.

The goal of the occasion – associated with her Reach Higher initiative – was to open doors for emerging talent from the Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons, and more. Michelle even sported one of the student designs: a racerback blue dress by FIT’s Natalya Koval.

Along with exposing the students to the expertise of Zac Posen, Prabal Gurung, and Lela Rose, FLOTUS shared a patriotic success story. Citing SPANX founder Sara Blakely’s growth into a billionaire entrepreneur, Michelle reminded the designers that hard work remains at the core of the fashion business. Sara took jobs at Disney World and in fax-machine sales to save the money she needed for her first SPANX product. And that’s right about when Michelle declared that, “We all wear them with pride.”

So there you have it: FLOTUS is as big a fan of SPANX as you are.
