The Golden Touch: Tory Burch Is Having a Groundbreaking Year

Tory Burch has already gained a cultlike following for her Reva flats and wardrobe-energizing prints. That career milestone? Achieved. Now, the designer is reportedly making more headway on her résumé: surpassing $1 billion in revenue in 2014. On its own, that figure is no small feat – but when you combine it with the fact that her brand is just a decade old, it’s astonishing.

And the media has taken note of the label’s earning power. This week, Fast Company published an intimate profile on Tory in its September 2014 issue, outlining her company’s history from inception through its future plans. Having left her fashion PR path to raise three boys, Tory’s story is a relatable one, even if her privileged upbringing is less so. But Tory channeled her globetrotting experiences into beautiful items that defined “accessible luxury,” earning our affection (and disposable income) along the way.

At the core of Tory’s success is her family. They helped staff her Manhattan storefront on opening day in February 2004, and her parents’ colorful style continues to be a source of inspiration to this day. She’s even gone so far as to name the company’s guiding principles (including kindness, humility, and humor) after her dad, Buddy.

This year has brought, and will continue to bring, many firsts for the Tory Burch brand, all bearing her personal touch: a foray into wearable technology with a Fitbit collaboration, a coffee-table book called Tory Burch in Color, a collection of dinnerware, and sometime soon, a line of men’s items. While other American lifestyle icons have come before her (Donna Karan and Michael Kors come to mind), Tory continues to pave her own path as an entrepreneur to watch. And an upbeat, hardworking female one at that.

Calling All Sneakerheads: Customize Your Jordan Spizikes

Sneakerhead (noun): a person who collects, trades, or admires sneakers as a form of hobby. Not quite a sneakerhead but still appreciate a good-looking shoe? Enter the Air Jordan Spizike. The world was first introduced to the sneaker, designed to commemorate the friendship between Michael Jordan and Spike Lee, in 2006. Over the years, the Spizike has seen its fair share of design changes and colorway introductions. And now, thanks to NikeiD, sneakerheads and regular folk alike can customize their Jordan Spizike iD sneakers from top to bottom, creating a look that’s entirely their own.

Jordan Spizike

According to the Nike Launch Calendar, the newest Jordan Spizike is available in a variety of exclusive materials and colors, including denim. Choose from regular denim or an 80s-inspired black or midnight-navy acid wash, add a glow-in-the-dark outsole, and top off the look with bold laces if you so desire. And at $210 a pop, it’s a small price to pay for a piece of sneaker history.

For the ideal laid-back look, pair your custom Spizikes with a solid tee, cashmere cardigan, and narrow-leg denim (need a new set? Check out our Denim Fit Guide).

You’ll Flip (Pages) for LANVIN’s New Book

LANVIN, Paris’s oldest and most colorful fashion house, knows the importance of good window-shopping. Designer Alber Elbaz and his creative displays are the subjects of an upcoming Rizzoli tome set to hit stores, and coffee tables, in October.

The 260-page book, titled Lanvin: I Love You, highlights 200 color photos of the house’s eccentric storefront displays and installations. We’re not talking your run-of-the-mill mannequins. Expect to see hand-drawn sketches, vintage cars, and even musical instruments made of crushed cans. Alber is known for incorporating elaborate props and artwork into every display and begins each one with a story and sketch. “Windows are the most direct way to communicate with people,” he writes in the book’s foreword.

Between this and the upcoming Louis Vuitton photography book, my fashion library is about to get a serious fall upgrade – even if my wardrobe isn’t.

Gym-Goers, Rejoice: J.Crew Has a Suit for You

Thanks to beach season, your gym game has been on point for months, which puts you in the sweet spot for fitting into that best-man suit next month, right? Wrong. That strong build, so well-suited for the sand, doesn’t always warm up well to narrow-leg suit pants and a closely tailored jacket. Luckily, J.Crew has released a new athletically minded suit fit just for you.

Meet the Crosby cut.

J-Crew-Crosby-Suit-Launch-1

Now, just what makes the Crosby cut so apt at accommodating bis, tris, and calves, you ask? J.Crew’s menswear director Frank Muytjens elaborates below.

It’s all about the proportions…we didn’t want to create a suit that was just a bigger version of the Ludlow. We focused on the upper torso, biceps and shoulders the most. We opened up the armhole, made the shoulder a little wider and worked on opening up the body as well. We also widened the lapel a hair, just to make sure everything was proportional. For the pants, we opened it up in the waist and thigh area, but still made sure the leg opening was slim.

Thankfully, showing up to that wedding in a too-small or too-big suit shouldn’t be an issue anymore. But don’t go trading in every suit in your wardrobe yet. Just know this: The tailor is your friend. Find a good one, then ask for help figuring out the right cut for your body type. They’ll alter your current suits, so you can feel free to start P90x.

Play Time: Opening Ceremony Will Stage a One-Act Show During Fashion Week

Every February and September designers continue to think outside the box – or, in the case of New York Fashion Week, the Lincoln Center tents – when it comes to presenting their work. Over the winter, Alexander Wang drew guests to (gasp!) Brooklyn Navy Yard, while last fall Rick Owens had college step squads sport his clothing instead of supermodels. And next month, Opening Ceremony will push the envelope with a one-act play in lieu of a traditional runway show.

Opening Ceremony

Spike Jonze and OC cofounder Humberto Leon via OpeningCeremony.us

The ultra-hip brand is still working on a script for its September 7 production, which is just a couple weeks away. But before you start labeling them procrastinators, keep in mind that OC is working with Academy Award–winning director (and frequent collaborator) Spike Jonze. Also on the playbill? Everyone’s fave funny man Jonah Hill, who sadly won’t be on stage but will have a writing credit.

Now, the suspense builds: What on earth is the storyline? Whatever the outcome, I’m excited to see the collection in action.
