Recently, a friend of mine completely revamped her study… into a sublimely stylish nursery. Grey walls splashed with yellow accents. Teeny little elephants posed next to chevron pillows. It was Pinterest-perfect, in the most lovely of ways, and it finally hit me: gone are the days when babydom meant generic décor. The modern world of baby is delightfully playful – and, best of all, personal.

No one knows this better than children’s design guru, Bridget Kelly. A former Pottery Barn Kids designer, Bridget now helms her own adorably whimsical, feel-good children’s brand, The Little Acorn. True to its motto “Grow Up Happy,” the brand encourages little ones to learn acceptance and dream big. Think happy messaging and lots and lots of color (as Bridget says, “The child in me has to be surrounded by it – color just simply makes us all happier!”).

Here, Bridget shares a few words about decorating the nursery.

Always follow your heart when it comes to design. Creating the nursery is such a personal and defining moment in a new family’s life – it must mean something to you, as you are the ones who will remember it most… even more than baby!

Be inspired by tradition. Much like a wedding, the idea of “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” is a great starting point when it comes to the nursery-to-be.

Don’t be afraid of colors in this age of grey – color pops beautifully off of grey walls and grey furniture.

Get personal. It warms my heart to see art from mommy’s or daddy’s own childhood on the nursery wall mixed with current, meaningful art or family photos in black and white. Also, add a blanket that Grandmama made for you – or try our handmade quilts and bedding, which are made to be passed down from generation to generation.

Put safety first. It is important to keep the safest items in the nursery – a safe crib, a safe infant sleeping bag, art with no glass, and natural rugs. Our warm rugs are in natural fibers, with the quality and material that are safe for a baby’s room – don’t opt for synthetic rugs, which can emit dangerous off-gassing.

Our Dream Big: Kid’s Décor Featuring The Little Acorn Boutique opens Thursday, April 11, at 11AM ET.

Dr. Seuss, not-so-arguably one of the greatest children’s authors of all time, would be 109 today. From Green Eggs and Ham to Horton Hears a Who!, his books educate and inspire children and adults alike. Here, a few things about the author that may surprise you.

1904: Theodor Seuss Geisel is born.

1925: At Dartmouth College, the humorous writer and poet penned the pseudonym “Seuss” after a drinking violation forbade him from writing for school publications. We can thank Prohibition for this one-of-a-kind byline.

1927: While studying at Oxford University, Seuss met and married his wife, Helen Palmer.

1937: After it was rejected 27 times, Seuss published his first children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.

1940: Before the U.S. entered WWII, Seuss worked as a cartoonist, drawing over 400 editorial cartoons for the left-wing PM Magazine.

1943: Seuss joined the U.S. Army Air Forces as a captain and wrote Our Job in Japan, a military training film that became the basis for the 1947 Oscar-winning documentary feature, Design for Death.

1954: Horton Hears a Who! – featuring Horton the elephant for the second time and The Whos for the first – was published. Seuss was ever-vocal in his efforts to educate children, and many of his books were allegories for his own political and social concerns. The Lorax speaks to pollution, The Sneetches to racism, and Horton Hears a Who! to American anti-isolationism during WWII.

1957: A turning point came in Seuss’s career when he was asked to write a book in response to LIFE’s criticism of children’s poor reading levels. The result? The Cat in the Hat, which contains over 220 vocabulary words.

1966: How The Grinch Stole Christmas! was adapted into animated film.

1991: With 48 books in his repertoire and over 200 million copies sold, Seuss died at age 87. The New York Times called him the Modern Mother Goose.

The season is here. Winter-coat season, that is. If you’re on the market for a new parka or wool coat, then you’re in luck. Our Grab Your Coat: The Massive Outerwear Sale has every style and color imaginable for the whole fam. So stock up, and read on for a few at-home care tips (so you don’t have to hunt for a new one every season).

At-Home Outerwear Care:
1. You can clean your down parka without deflating it. Just toss it in the washing machine on the cold cycle, then put it in the dryer with a few tennis balls. They’ll keep the feathers distributed evenly and make sure it regains its shape.
2. If your wool coat needs a full cleaning, the dry cleaner will have to take care of it. But for spot cleaning, use a damp cloth and mild soap to work out the stain. Also, invest in a lint roller to keep hair and lint at bay.
3. Use cedar hangers when hanging wool coats to keep moths away (without the smell of mothballs).
4. Keep coats in garment bags to prevent lint, hair, dust, and other particles from collecting on them. And stuff the sleeves with acid-free paper so they don’t crease up during the warmer months.

Our Grab Your Coat: The Massive Outerwear Sale Boutique opens Tuesday, December 11, at 11AM ET.

Once a kid, always a kid. Well, maybe no one said that, but I wish I could still have recess and playtime – not to mention a huge, overflowing toy box. If given the opportunity to have my own “Big” moment, here’s what I’d be wishing for – and what the little ones in my family will likely end up with for the holidays.

1. Random House Little Critter® Complete Collection
Yes, I was the kid who snuck books under my covers with a flashlight when it was past my bedtime, and these Mercer Mayer titles made an appearance more than once.

2. Dexton Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse Ride-On Car
I definitely would have been the coolest kid in school (or maybe the neighborhood) puttering around in this lifelike Mercedes.

3. Guidecraft All in One Play Kitchen
There’s a solid chance my cooking skills today would be much improved had my parents decided to let me have one of these – and an Easy-Bake Oven.

4. Zoobies® Corduroy™ Storytime Pal
What kid doesn’t love the story of Corduroy? And this blanket-that-doubles-as-a-stuffed-animal would have made story time (and naptime) a whole lot more fun.

5. Guidecraft Deluxe Art Center
My parents’ kitchen table still (to their dismay) bears marks of hours spent crafting, glue-gunning, and painting. With this all-in-one craft center, budding artists can draw, paint, and create to their hearts’ content – without making a mess all over the room.

Give the kids what they want in our Ready. Set. Toys: The Playroom’s Greatest Hits Boutique, open on Tuesday, October 30, at 11AM ET.

Move over, Shark Week – it’s International Dinosaur Month, and we’re ready to celebrate.

Even eons later, the world’s still just as into dinosaurs as it was 251,000,000 years ago. In fact, there are countless ways to get the kids (and/or yourself) even more in touch with these beloved prehistoric pals, this side of the Stone Age.

1) Re-rent Jurassic Park. While the once-groundbreaking “special effects” may be lost on the Pixar generation, there’s no denying that that velociraptor scene (the one in the kitchen) was downright terrifying. They’ll respect it. We promise.

2) If a natural history museum is within reach, pack a lunch and spend a Saturday there. Larger-than-life skeletons will put the dino’s grandeur in full perspective.

3) Rotate dinosaur eggs into snack time. (The kids don’t have to know they’re healthy…)

4) Dress your little one as a dinosaur for Halloween. Millions-of-years-old reptiles always get more candy.

5) Archeologists in training can hone their skills by digging for dino bones online.

6) If this dinosaur expert doesn’t have all the kids’ questions (“Why are dinosaurs so big?”) answered, this video from National Geographic surely will.

7) Shop our Little Rue Celebrates International Dinosaur Month Boutique! It’s packed with dinosaur-inspired toys, books, and more, sure to keep any budding paleontologist blissfully occupied for hours.

Our Little Rue Celebrates International Dinosaur Month Boutique opens Wednesday, October 17, at 11AM ET.
