The chicest bag this season? It’s not a ladylike quilted chain-strap, oversized clutch, or top-handle satchel. It’s actually the trusty old backpack.

Okay, so, it’s not any old backpack. The chic leather one we’re seeing on celebrities, our favorite street-style stars, and the runways is a cool, nonchalant, off-duty version. Mary-Kate and Ashley’s label, The Row, has come out with a $55,000 crocodile model and (by comparison, a relative steal) a $17,000 patchwork fur one. Style icon Kate Bosworth is sporting 3.1 Phillip Lim’s white version in the November issue of Lucky magazine and designer Junya Watanabe‘s entire men’s 2014 spring collection was inspired by the humble backpack.

First we had Michelle Obama, who put homegrown designers like Jason Wu and Thakoon on the map. Then we had Kate Middleton, who created international pandemonium when everything she wore – from her royal blue Issa engagement dress to her polka dot Topshop maternity dress – sold out in seconds. She even made the seemingly impossible happen: nude panty-hose sales, once a granny staple, rose 500% after she and sister Pippa dared to cover their bare legs. This fashion revolution was instantly known as “The Kate Effect.”

Now we have a new fashionista to follow – and she isn’t a princess or First Lady. She’s Olivia Pope, a political “fixer” on the hit ABC show Scandal.

The big Spring 2014 runways shows (New York, London, Paris, and Milan) are officially over. Now, after sitting through dozens of shows and poring over hundreds of images, I’ve rounded up the top five trends you should expect to see in the new year.

Mark your calendar – everyone’s favorite fashionista, Sarah Jessica Parker, is (finally) launching her own shoe line, aptly called SJP. “I really wanted to bring back the single sole,” explains Parker. The actress, who is collaborating with Manolo Blahnik’s CEO on the collection, says she wanted to create and offer “colors, regardless of the trends, to women in beautiful shapes, and at affordable prices.”

Last week I, along with the Rue La La team, descended into Hollywood to film a segment for Extra TV with the lovely Maria Menounos. After Mario Lopez wrapped up his segment with Dancing With the Stars judge, Bruno (who broke out into a rendition of “What a Wonderful World” at the end), it was my turn to face the live audience at Universal Studios. On the agenda? Lots of fashion talk.

While I shared what was on trend, and on Rue, this season – printed jeans, suede heels, bold necklaces, and top-handle ladylike bags – Maria couldn’t take her eyes off of our FENDI Polifonia T-strap pumps. “I haven’t bought a pair of chunky heels yet,” she shared. “These ones make me want to try the trend because I love the studded detailing.” And her fawning didn’t stop there. After giving Maria a virtual tour of our Boutiques, I think I may have a fellow Rue addict on my hands. Welcome to the club, Maria.

Tune into NBC’s EXTRA this weekend to see all of Jackie’s fall fashion must-haves. Then, tweet @ruelala with #askjackie to get all of your style questions answered.

This fall, not one, but two big designers have thrown their hats into the beauty arena. Going head-to-head off the runway, Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors have both created eponymous makeup lines.

New York Fashion Week saw its fair share of colors come down the runway, but seafoam green and blush pink were the ones that really caught the Rue team’s eyes. In fact, our Fashion Director and Lead Copy Director have been battling it out over which one will be the color of the season ever since. Check out each of their stances below, then decide for yourself. (As for me, I’m staying impartial. They are my bosses, after all.)

I love animal prints. They’re always in style, always look sophisticated, and are an easy way to break up an all-black ensemble. So, when I started to notice giraffe prints popping up on both the runway and street, I was a little more than intrigued. Bolder than a zebra print and more fun than a leopard print, this exotic pattern makes a statement like no other.
