3 Easy, Yet Artful, Home Updates

Infusing something noticeably surprising into a room does not  require an absolute overhaul. In fact, simple changes can make the biggest impact. Here, a few tweaks to try.

Easy and Artful Home Updates

Add drama to your windows
Install rods just an inch or two above the window. Then, let those curtains drape low, creating a puddling effect on the floor.

Incorporate extra seating
Store an ottoman or stool under a console. When guests drop by? Pull these out for chic, space-saving seats.

Play with pillow proportions
The fastest way to change up a room’s look: throw pillows. Try mixing oblong or round pieces in with your all-square arrangement.

Take a Seat: All About the Adirondack Chair

Admit it. When you picture the ideal summer day, this chair – plus a light beer, a book, and you in a swimsuit – is part of the scene. It was, after all, created in 1903 in the Adirondack Mountains, the epitome of summertime escapes. Since then, it’s become an American mainstay of alfresco R&R. Here? The story behind its staying power.

About Adirondack Chairs

  • It’s known for its wide armrests, curved seat, and high back – i.e., all-around comfort for every body type.
  • Yellow cedar wood, which Adirondack chairs are often made from, is naturally resistant to moisture, decay, and insect damage.
  • When topped off with protective polyurethane paint, these chairs can withstand the harshest winter or summer weather.

Make the Bed in Flannel: The Cozy Staple’s All Grown Up

The thought of flannel sheets might conjure memories of the princess-printed or Boy Scout–ready sets you had as a kid. But now? It’s all grown up.

Why Flannel Sheets Rock

Rue Living Assistant Buyer Cara P. shares why our Egyptian cotton flannel is a bedtime staple for all ages: ”It’s made my winter sleep experience feel more like indulgence than survival. I don’t have to jump into an icy-cold bed and wait that excruciating minute for the covers to warm up. It’s like sleeping inside a fluffy cloud – that’s heated.”

We’re down for that.

The Winter Bed Update: Cozy Flannel, Down, & More Boutique opens Tuesday, December 24, at 11AM ET.

3 Things Not to Do When Washing Sheets

Fact: Although there are few better feelings than buying new, collapse-into bedding, you shouldn’t have to replace your sheets every year. If you make a habit of washing them with care, the threads will stay strong without roughening or fraying for five to seven years. If not, well, that’s why we’re here.

How to Wash Sheets

Do not wash sheets in hot water.
Why? Cotton (even when preshrunk) will shrink a bit in high heat. Choose warm or cold temps on all cycles.

Do not use fabric softeners or dryer sheets.
Why? The chemicals in these additives break down threads, causing premature fraying. Tip: When washing, use half the recommended detergent dose.

Do not let sheets dry completely in the dryer.
Why? The second fabric overheats, it becomes brittle – i.e. goodbye, coziness. Partially dry on your machine’s lowest setting, then hang to finish.

Our Sheets 101: Wrinkle-Resistant, Percale, & Sateen Boutique opens Friday, December 20, at 3PM ET.
