Coming Up Roses: How to Make an At-Home Petal Facial

My coworker just passed by the writers’ corner and exclaimed, “It’s like a garden over here!” And, honestly, it is. Roses abound in the Rue office on Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, however, in four to seven days, sad, half-wilted petals will stand in their place. Sure, you could make potpourri – while knitting mittens for your bridge group. Or, you could do something far more fabulous: give yourself a facial. According to SELF magazine’s contributing blogger Alexandra Samuel, roses are “ridiculously” good for the skin. “They’ve got built-in toners to get you glowing.”

The Beauty Report: The 3 Best Looks From NYFW

So, clothing may be the biggest draw of New York Fashion Week – but there’s no shortage of beauty trends on those runways, either. Here are three looks sure to be a hit next fall.

NYFW Beauty Trends

  1. Dramatic Eyes
From rag & bone to Meskita, bold cat-eyes lined the lids of models strutting down this season’s runways. And I’m not talking about a little flick of liner – come fall, your cat-eye should be anything but subtle.
  2. Loose Chignons
As seen on the runways of Altuzarra and Christian Siriano, messy, loose chignons are primed to be a big hair trend, so say goodbye to those polished ballerina buns.
  3. Burgundy Accents
From the nail art at Prabal Gurung to the shadow seen on the lids of Helmut Lang’s models, burgundy seems to be the upcoming color du jour. I, for one, am certainly not complaining.

Behind the Scenes We Go: Backstage Beauty at Meskita

From Peter Som to Richard Chai Love, the makeup looks at New York Fashion Week have been all about the eyes. And it was no different at Meskita‘s neoprene-filled runway show last night, where Bobbi Brown’s lead makeup artist, Rogelio Reyna, took the cat-eye to new levels.

NYFW: Behind the Scenes at Meskita

“We wanted to go with a 50s-meets-New-York-Barbie look,” Rogelio says, “so we just did flawless-looking skin with an extreme cat-eye.”

His tips for achieving the runway look? “Always follow your natural eye. Start at the corner of your eye, draw a little line up to the crease, do a little triangle, and follow it onto the lid itself. And then, just color within the lines.” Rogelio also recommends using Bobbi Brown’s award-winning long-wear gel eyeliner to keep your cat-eye from smearing.

As for other beauty trends this Fashion Week, Rogelio says it’s all about soft, not-overgroomed brows and a pale, almost-nude lip. Sounds like our fall beauty routines will be pretty easy – once we master this cat-eye, that is.

Behind the Scenes We Go: Backstage at Christian Siriano

Christian Siriano. Today, we know him as Project Runway’s youngest – and most successful – winner. Pieces from his eponymous label can be seen inside the likes of Italian Vogue and all over the red carpet. But before he conquered the fashion world, did you know he was a hairdresser? Fact. And it’s just one of the reasons Sebastian Professional lead hairstylist Anthony Cole wanted to work with the designer on his highly anticipated Fall/Winter 2014 show.

Lip Service: Blueberry Spotted on the Mouths of NYFW Models

Last fall it was oxblood. Last summer, tangerine. And next September? We’ll be sporting this deep blueberry lip color (or at least giving it the old college try). Flawlessly painted on the models of Ann Yee’s Fall 2014 show, this matte hue complemented black and grey knits, natural makeup, and updos with serious edge. The creator? None other than MAC Cosmetics senior makeup artist Fatima T. Can you say coolest job ever?

With a sleek, simple ensemble and a smear of foundation, we’re thinking this color could be a success. Our only advice? Leave the big baubles at home. Your lips will be a statement in themselves.

About Face: Johnny Depp’s Latest Award Is in the (Makeup) Bag

In the world of acting awards, Johnny Depp is, in my opinion, one of Tinseltown’s most under-recognized artists (in terms of trophies won, anyway). Which might explain why I was so excited to learn that Depp has, in fact, won an award that I didn’t even know he was up for. The best part? It’s for his makeup.

Johnny Depp
Okay, I’m not talking about that kind of makeup. Although Depp is known for his guyliner both on and off set, this time his passion for movie makeup is what’s generating buzz. The actor has been named the first-ever recipient of the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award. Translation? The Guild’s members are honoring Depp’s use of their crafts in transforming himself – both physically and emotionally – into the characters he plays on screen. Exhibit A: Captain Jack Sparrow.

Here’s hoping he dishes on some application tips in his acceptance speech.

Master the Makeup Trick: A Guide to Contouring

Think only beauty pros and Kim Kardashian can understand the science behind contouring? Think again. We makeup novices can sculpt our faces, too. Simply check out the tips below and give it a go. Trust me, the benefits of contouring are just too great to pass up – not only does it slim your face and accentuate your natural beauty, it also makes you look younger. I know. Here’s how:

A Guide to Contouring

First, stock your beauty toolbox.

  1. Find a large, angled brush for emphasizing your cheekbones. I recommend MAC’s 168 Large Angled Contour Brush.
  2. Pick a matte shadow in a shade darker than your skin tone. It’s a must for adding depth to your face.
  3. Look for a cream-based highlighter to let your best features shine while maintaining soft lines. Try out NARS’s “The Multiple.”

Then, play up those features.

  1. Begin with the large angled brush and matte shadow. Brush the shadow under and up into your cheekbones. (Goodbye, pudgy cheeks.) To slim your face, add shadow along your hairline and jawline as well.
  2. Next, use your highlighter to play up your best features. A simple guide to contouring is to focus on the area that you have already dusted with shadow. For example, highlight under your eyes to the tops of your cheeks to contrast with the shadow under your cheekbones.

See? Wasn’t that hard, was it?

“The Rachel” Haircut Is Back

No, not that one, the other “Rachel.” You know, the haircut Jennifer Aniston debuted in Season 7 of Friends? The one that was still a bob but not quite as 90s-looking? Here’s a picture. Yeah, that one. According to ELLE, it’s making a big comeback this year. So, grab your shears. Or, rather, just make an appointment with your hair stylist.

Case of the Blues: A Look at This Season’s Hottest Eye-Shadow Hue

After my middle school days, I swore off blue eye shadow. I had a heavy hand with my makeup brush and it just wasn’t doing me any favors. But now, blue shadow is making a triumphant comeback after being featured in both the Fall and Spring Fashion Weeks – and this time around, I’m determined to wear it right.
