Listen Up: These Fall Trends Belong in Your Closet

BY JACKIE NASSER, RUE LA LA FASHION DIRECTOR

A new season always gives me wardrobe fatigue. Yes, I’m the person who stands in front of their closet saying over and over: “I’ve got nothing to wear. No really, I have nothing to wear.” But I discovered a simple remedy to combat this desperate state. And one that actually makes me excited to kick off a new season (yes, even a colder one).

My solution? Choose two or three new trends and then purchase one or two items from each. Not only will you be ahead of the curve, but your significant other (or pet) will never hear you utter those dreaded words again. Here’s my take on the top trends this fall.

Betsey Just Wants to Have Fun – Dancing on TV

Betsey Johnson is best described by the word “fun,” so it was only fitting that for her Dancing with the Stars debut she shimmied to Cyndi Lauper’s anthem “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” One of the oldest contestants to ever perform in the competitive series, Betsey wore a tulle-trimmed pink tutu and an electric blue lace top. Layered over that ensemble was a cheeky black and pink leopard-print bra.

As colorful as Betsey looked, an unfortunate wardrobe snafu happened during the routine. When her feather boa prop caught on a clothing rack, she stopped short. “As much as I screwed up, my fans loved me for it. I ended the dance with a Gloria Gaynor kind of cartwheel and split to say, ‘I Will Survive,’” she told WWD. Lucky for the spunky designer, she (and dance partner Tony Dovolani) made it to the next round.

Versace Restores Milan’s Oldest Shopping Center

This Friday marks a major moment for Versace, as the luxe Italian fashion house prepares to open a new boutique in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the world’s oldest shopping centers. And just like that, the Canals of Venice got pushed to my number two must-see Italian attraction.

The opening is part of a larger renovation project that Versace has taken on: refurbishing the entire four-story Galleria. The label will spend nearly $2 million on the restoration of the crumbling landmark. Originally constructed in 1865, the Galleria was in dire need of a facelift, which should be completed next spring.

In the meantime, I’ll be dreaming of the mall that fuses haute couture and history.

Nick Cannon Debuts $2 Million Diamond Loafers

It’s no secret that the lifestyles of the rich and famous aren’t always the most humble. Multiple homes. 10-carat engagement rings. Chrome-covered cars. But $2 million shoes? That’s where the line should be drawn. Not so for Nick Cannon, the host of America’s Got Talent, who is gaining a lot of attention for the diamond-encrusted loafers he sported on Tuesday night’s finale.

According to Justin Fenner, associate online style editor at details.com, the shoes are the work of Jacob of Beverly Hills. “Over 14,000 round white diamonds – roughly 340 carats – were set into white gold and then affixed to the shoes,” Justin says. “The entire process took nearly a year to complete.”

Let’s ignore the fact that there are plenty of more important things one can do with $2 million, like, say, feed a family of four for 133 years. Nick’s showstopping shoes are currently with the Guinness Book of World Records for consideration as the most expensive shoes in the world.

Wow. How about a nice pair of leather loafers instead? This pair by Cole Haan is timeless, can be dressed up or down, and won’t scream “Post-Divorce Midlife Crisis” while you’re walking down the street. Promise.

The Quick Guide to Leather Care

So you’ve finally taken the plunge on the leather jacket/boots/messenger bag you’ve had your eye on. But how do you protect it from the elements and other hazards of daily wear? Follow the three easy steps below to keep your leather in tip-top shape.

Cole-Haan-Leather-Care-Tips

1. Clean: Saddle soap. Murphy Oil Soap. Ivory soap. Take your pick – be sure to avoid products with harmful detergents or acids – then apply it to a clean, damp cloth. And remember, you always want to test a small, inconspicuous area first.

2. Condition: Leather can stiffen and dry out, so keep it away from heat sources and follow this important step. To keep leather supple and flexible, regularly rub in a specialty moisturizing conditioner or dab on a bit of petroleum jelly.

3. Waterproof: Excessive moisture is your leather’s enemy. But a freak rainstorm doesn’t have to be a disaster. Prep to minimize damage with mink oil (warning: it might darken your leather), a wax-based polish, or Liquid Aquaseal spray.

Find some new leather to love. Shop our Cole Haan Men Boutique, which opened Tuesday, September 16, at 11AM ET.

Go Green: Stella McCartney Debuts Eco-Friendly Capsule Collection

Recycling, carrying groceries in cute totes, and biking around town are all chic ways to lend Mother Nature a hand. But this week, eco-conscious designer Stella McCartney took going green to a new level, showing an entire capsule collection of sustainable dresses at London Fashion Week.

Dubbed the “Green Carpet Collection,” the line mixes abstract water-based ink prints with seventies-inspired wood-heeled shoes. And the clothes weren’t the only green designs at the launch – her presentation at the Royal Institution of Great Britain used reclaimed film props, including shrubbery from the set of Les Misérables.

If this is the direction eco-friendly fashion is headed, then I’ll definitely tip my hat to Stella, known for her company-wide commitment to sustainable materials, as its very chic pioneer.

FLOTUS to Host a Fashion Party – Who’s Invited?

It’s no secret that Michelle Obama has some stylish friends in her address book. And now, the First Lady is summoning her favorite American designers and industry bigwigs for a “Celebration of Design” event.

Last week, invitations were sent out for the October 8 reception. But the real question is: Who is on the guest list? So far, Maria Cornejo and executives from Jimmy Choo and Talbots are to be expected. As far as others, I have some guesses. Maybe Carolina Herrera? Jason Wu? And of course, the ever-attainable J.Crew.

Yes, her husband received some flack for that tan suit a few weeks ago. Perhaps he can run that controversial outfit by a house full of fashion experts next month.

Newsflash: Karl Lagerfeld Will Print His Own Paper

Karl Lagerfeld just might be the greatest fashion personality of today. If his fitting room selfie and namesake hotel didn’t convince you, his very own special edition newspaper, The Karl Daily, will.

Insta-Karlism-Karls-Diary

Intended to be a cheeky look into the fashion industry, the publication debuts September 20 in seven European Karl Lagerfeld stores. It will feature interviews with the designer and, of course, a few guest editor appearances from Karl’s own cat (and Internet legend) Choupette.

Readers will find the usual newspaper sections – think horoscopes, sports news, and weather updates – in addition to Karl’s personal observations and previews from his upcoming collections.

I can’t think of any other papers with a feline on the masthead, so I’m hoping Choupette might share some beauty (or rather, grooming) tips.

3 Luxe Classics That Are Worth the Investment

Versace. Valentino. Salvatore Ferragamo. The world of luxe is filled with bold names and, sometimes, even bolder prices. So how do you know if an item is truly worth the investment? Assistant Buyer (and expert in all things luxury) Michael B. explains his top three picks. And why they’re worth every penny.

Luxe-Mens-Classics

Navy Suit: Unlike less expensive options, luxury suiting is tailored to perfection and constructed in quality wool – which means it should last for up to ten years of sporadic wear. To keep things current, Michael recommends go-with-everything navy paired with a light blue dress shirt for a tonal look.

Bit Loafers: If you’re investing in a shoe, it’s best to invest in a versatile one. And no other shoe is more easily dressed up or down than the loafer. Pick a pair of Salvatore Ferragamo’s Gancio Bit versions to convey instant status, then condition the leather and have a cobbler resole to exude it forever.

100% Silk Tie: Stiff synthetic fabrics are prone to wrinkles. But this fine weave? It will always hang straight and hold a dimple under the knot. Try jazzing up your look with a classic stripe or polka dot. The pattern adds more interest than a solid without venturing into full-on print territory.

Knock these classics off your to-buy list. Shop The One-Stop Luxe Shop: Versace & More for Men Boutique, which opened Tuesday, September 16, at 11AM ET.

The Met Gala Looks to China for Its 2015 Theme

It may be eight months away, but next year’s Met Gala theme has already been locked in. The kickoff night for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Anna Wintour Costume Center will focus on the Far East and the upcoming Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film, and Fashion exhibit.

Met Gala

Image via fashiongonerogue.com

The Met Gala’s host Silas Chou will be joined by Jennifer Lawrence, Chinese actress Gong Li, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, Chinese-American businesswoman Wendi Murdoch, and, of course, Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. Alongside couture samplings from designers Alexander McQueen and Laurence Xu, the exhibit will also feature paintings, decorative arts, and film representations from China – all the result of a collaboration between the Costume Institute and the Met’s Department of Asian Art.

Curator Andrew Bolton notes that Chinese Whispers will explore how Westerners have understood (and misunderstood) Chinese culture, comparing it to a game of telephone, which the British call “Chinese whispers,” with messages being lost and misconstrued throughout the years. More than a hundred avant-garde pieces await museum-goers and gala attendees alike.

And on that note, we can imagine there will be a lot of silk, embroidery, and Mandarin collars on the red carpet. What other surprises might the fashionable night bring? We’ll just have to wait for the gossip whispers next spring.
