The Chambray Shirt: A Man’s Spring Staple

We’re obsessed with chambray. It’s capable of tackling Saturdays at the dive bar just as well as Monday-afternoon meetings. It’s lightweight, which makes wearing long sleeves in the summer bearable. And it looks good – plain and simple.

But before we get all sappy, a little lesson: What is chambray?

The Statement Pant: Our Fashion Director on the Season’s Boldest Bottoms

Spring is finally here. Meaning? It’s time to break out those statement pants. And from bold hues to print mixing, no one knows how to pull off the trend better than our fashion director. Check out her tips below.

How to Wear the Statement Pant

  1. You don’t always have to fall back on a white top with bright pants. Play with bold colors on top, too.
  2. Opt for minimal makeup and accessories (think one sleek gold bangle) and let your outfit do all the talking.
  3. When wearing a bold pant, keep shoes simple. You can’t go wrong with a pair of neutral, pointed-toe pumps.

#CastMeMarc: Label Picks New Face via Social Media

Last night, ultra-cool label Marc by Marc Jacobs announced that it will be selecting the face of its latest campaign through a social media “casting call.” Yes, you read that right – one of us mere tweeting mortals might just skyrocket to glossy-paged stardom.

The audition process is pretty straightforward. All you have to do is snap a picture, hashtag it with #CastMeMarc, and post it to Instagram or Twitter. So expect your feeds to get slammed with artfully staged selfies over the next few days. I mean, who could resist the opportunity to join the ranks of Victoria Beckham, Sofia Coppola, Miley Cyrus, and the Fanning sisters? Not this writer.

Now, go get that selfie game on point. The “casting call” ends April 9.

Fashion Throwback: The Bucket Bag Reemerges

It’s official: Bucket bags are back. So if you held onto one from a decade ago – or inherited an aunt’s 70s original – you’re in luck. But before you set out on a recon mission to secure said bag, let’s take a closer look at this carry-all’s past.

Bucket Bags Are Back

It all began in the 1970s, when women opted for breezy, easygoing looks that went hand-in-hand with their free-spirited lifestyle. And the bucket bag, with its long, hands-free shoulder strap and roomy shape, fit that to a T. Equal parts form and function, it quickly became a must-have accessory for every woman of the era.

Today, designers have updated this boho style with new materials and luxe accents, making it a true modern classic – and it’s topping every trend list this spring.

On The Hunt: New App Tracks Down the Looks You Love

We’ve all been there. Making a coffee run, heading home from the gym, or sitting down to brunch only to be stopped in our tracks by a passerby’s flawless ensemble. But lest we disturb (or, worse, scare) the supremely chic being, we watch wistfully as the Perfect Outfit saunters by, along with any hope of learning where it came from. However, thanks to a new app called The Hunt, we no longer have to invade someone’s personal space to steal his or her great style.

The Hunt Fashion App

Instead, all that’s required is The Hunt and a healthy dose of stealth. Using the app, simply snap a quick photo of the fashionably gifted guy or girl (taking care to not include his or her face) and then share it with fellow users who, with their own fashion savviness, can help identify the items. Consider it crowdsourcing couture.

Not quite ready to play paparazzi? Try snapping pictures of celebrities you see online or in magazines before you take to the streets in search of great style.

Head over to Glamour to read more about The Hunt.

Trendsetters at Work: E! Online Interviews Our Fashion Director

Ever wondered what a typical day is like for our fashion director, Jackie? Well, you’re about to find out. E!, one of our favorite television networks, chose to feature our very own style guru in its “Trendsetters at Work” series. For the piece, E! visited Rue’s New York offices in the heart of Bryant Park to talk style, chic work spaces, and climbing the fashion ladder. Check out a few soundbites below.

How did you get started in your career?
I got an internship at ELLE magazine. I initially had a hybrid role working for both the beauty and the features departments. I got to test out hundreds of new products, learn the science and technology behind beauty products, go to press events and, most importantly, I learned how to write (it’s harder than you think!). Interning is the best way to work out if a job is right for you or not. I knew immediately that I wanted to be in the editorial world. When a fashion position opened up at ELLEgirl magazine I jumped at the chance.

Diamond Decoder: The Four Cs, Explained

Fact: Diamonds are forever. So, before you commit to one, a little sparkle rundown is in order. Just read up and prepare to flaunt away.

The Four Cs of Diamonds
Cut
Cut determines a diamond’s brilliance. Meaning? The better it’s cut, the more showstopping sparkle the diamond will have.

Color
A diamond’s color grade actually refers to its lack of color. Completely colorless stones receive the highest quality grades.

Clarity
Clarity refers to a diamond’s tiny natural imperfections, called inclusions. The fewer the flaws, the higher the clarity grade.

Carat
The carat of a diamond refers to its weight, not the actual size of the stone.

Pull Off the Look: A Graphic Tee & Blazer

If chocolate-covered bacon taught us anything, it’s that unexpected combos can really hit it out of the park. So, this month, pull two items from your closet that you’d never dare wear together – your precisely tailored blazer and your worn-in graphic tee – then, dare. And watch as everyone else follows suit.

Here’s how to do it right.

How to Pair a Blazer with a Graphic Tee

On top: Pick a tee with a solid base color and strong graphic. (Leave it untucked.) Then add a blazer in black, navy, or grey.

On bottom: Your best bet? Denim. Go for a fail-safe dark-blue wash or wear black narrow-leg jeans for a bit of rock ‘n’ roll edge.

On your feet: Play it cool in trendy sneakers. And if you want to up the level of polish, finish the look with leather or suede chukkas.

Want to shop the look? Our Graphic Tees & Blazers: Wear Them Together Boutique opens Tuesday, April 1 at 11AM ET.
