About Face: NARS Unveils New Fall Campaign

Whenever I ask my mother if I “look okay,” she always replies, “Yes, but throw on a little lipstick.” Over at NARS, the mother of all beauty brands, lipstick is also on the agenda as the label celebrates 20 years in the business. A newly announced fall campaign features a collection of 40 game-changing hues with 68-year-old English actress Charlotte Rampling as the face of the campaign.

The Audacious Lipstick Collection will launch in September and is inspired by the 12 colors in François Nars’s first-ever collection. Unlike most fall shades, these range from electric red to lavender and can be worn well after the leaves turn. The impeccable ad features Charlotte, a longtime muse of NARS, in a stunning black-and-white photo taken by the founder himself.

Rumor has it that this collection delivers full color in just one stroke. So clear off the vanity, because it may be the only lipstick you’ll ever need. And, of course, my mother would definitely approve.

From Red Soles to Red Toes: Meet Christian Louboutin Beauté

One of the biggest names in shoes has officially introduced his moniker to the beauty business. Christian Louboutin Beauté, a long-rumored extension of the shoe designer’s label, just launched with a flagship red nail polish leading the way. Titled “Rouge Louboutin,” the varnish is packaged in a faceted glass bottle with a calligraphy-inspired cap, playing off the eight-inch heel height of his tallest shoe, the Ballerina Ultima. A stiletto-shaped bottle is an obvious choice, but it’s also a nod to Louboutin’s first red soles in 1992, which were literally painted with nail polish.

Not unlike a pair of his coveted red soles, “Rouge Louboutin” doesn’t come cheap. Currently the only hue available, the signature crimson shade will run you $50. Start contributing to your Louboutin fund – 30 more colors will debut on August 31. Until I can afford my own pair, I’ll settle for sporting red on my toes instead of my soles.

Shear Determination: How the Power Bob Is Taking Over

We’ve all heard it before: First impressions matter. And guess what? Your hairstyle plays a big part in those initial make-or-break 30 seconds. If you’re looking for a haircut that screams, “I’m the girl for the job,” opting for a short bob – also known as the “Power Bob” – might be your best bet.

Rock Blake Lively’s Met Gala Ponytail: Our Hairstylist Shows Us How

Summer humidity often results in frizzy locks, so I often opt for the never-fail ponytail during hot months. If you’re looking for fancier strands, however, turn to Blake Lively’s Met Gala tri-pony. (Amazing, right?) To re-create the look, just follow the simple steps from Rachael B., our hair and makeup artist, below.

A Head for Business: Gwyneth Paltrow Embarks on a New Venture

Love her or hate her, you have to admit that Gwyneth Paltrow has quite the résumé. From winning an Academy Award to founding her own lifestyle website, it seems the mother of two has done it all. So when Blo Blow Dry Bar announced yesterday that she will be working on the company’s creative direction, I wasn’t all that shocked. Although I did wonder: Why her?

Well, according to the beauty franchise, it was her “keen business instinct” and “emphasis on high-quality customer experience” that led to the collaboration. I have a feeling, however, that it might have more to do with last year’s talk of Gwyneth opening her own blow dry bar. Avoiding competition? Probably. But I am excited to see where she’ll take the company. (Think goop + blowouts.)

To Have & to Hold: Brides-to-Be Get “Hand Lifts” for Engagement Selfies

First comes love, then comes… plastic surgery? According to NYC dermatologist Dr. Ariel Ostad, more and more engaged women are turning to “hand lifts” instead of filters to make sure their announcement selfies are flawless.

Hand Lifts

The quick – and pricey – ten-minute procedure involves JUVÉDERM injections that instantly smooth wrinkles and plump skin.  Now, I can appreciate a little pre-Instagram prep work. You know, some lotion and a fresh manicure. But appearance-altering measures? That just seems over the top. (And personally, I can think of much better ways to spend the $1,200 price tag.)

Over-Snoozers, Rejoice: The No-Makeup Look Is In

Think back to when you were 14. At my junior high, heading to the bathroom sans lip gloss (or you know, roll-on face glitter) was a pointless journey. And if you wanted to be part of the so-called popular crowd, blotting, smearing, and dabbing in front of the mirror was a must.

Today? If I’m caught in the office bathroom with mascara in hand, I blush with embarrassment. It seems that a rigorous makeup routine has fallen out of style. And over-primping has become superficial rather than expected. The concern? “Makeup equals groomed and presentable, no makeup equals unprofessional and unkempt, and too much makeup means you can’t be taken seriously,” writes Refinery29. So where do we find middle ground?

Lip Service: The Three Lipstick Shades You Need Now

This season, bold lips are set to be big. So give subdued glosses a well-deserved break, start practicing that pout, and invest in these three must-have lipstick shades.

Lipstick Shades for Spring 2014

  1. Electric Orange
Bright orange shades were all over the S/S 2014 runways – and it’s a trend Hollywood’s hottest starlets have been sporting on every major red carpet. (See: Lupita Nyong’o and Selena Gomez.) Try Lancôme’s Rouge in Love Lipstick in Madame Tulipe and keep the rest of your makeup minimal.
  2. Radiant Orchid
This hue was dubbed Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year, and while you’ve probably seen it on this season’s trending tops and dresses, it also works in makeup form. Turn to Camilla Belle for inspiration and pick up a tube of Sephora+Pantone Universe Radiant Rush Matte Lipstick to execute the look.
  3. Soft Berry
After being featured on the JOIE runway, this classic shade is making a huge comeback. Look to Micheal Kors GLAM Lip Lacquer in Dame and apply with your ring finger to add color without looking overdone.

High-Heel Lovers, Foot Surgery is the New Facelift

Chin implants and G-spot injections have officially become old news. The new beauty fad? Plastic surgery on your feet. And no, I’m not talking bunion surgery à la Victoria Beckham. This latest craze is more on the level of traditional foot binding – except it’s elective. I’m talking toe reshaping and fat injections into the footpad.

Elective Foot Surgery for Shoes

The latter procedure, I could understand. Decades of squeezing my size-11 dinosaur feet into size-10 heels (albeit, super fabulous heels) hasn’t exactly made me want to run marathons. And I’m only 25. If you’re in pain? Fine. Go for it. If you’re craving a toe slope that descends like the bars of a handcrafted xylophone, it may be time for a reality check.

Another Big Win for Lupita: The Actress Scores PEOPLE’s “Most Beautiful”

With an Oscar, Miu Miu and Lancôme partnerships, and the unwavering admiration of the world’s fashion elite in the bag, Lupita Nyong’o has had a banner year. And today, it got even better as the 31-year-old Kenyan-Mexican actress was awarded the top spot on PEOPLE magazine’s annual “Most Beautiful” list.

Nyong’o first won hearts around the world as Patsey in Steve McQueen’s 2013 film 12 Years a Slave, and she hasn’t stopped since. That’s thanks, in large part, to her unique brand of humility (who could forget her “Dreams do come true” speech at the Academy Awards?), but also her chameleon-like ability to stun in everything from Givenchy to Giambattista Valli. A megawatt star from humble beginnings whose haute couture is outshone only by her heart? That’s just, well, beautiful.

Head over to people.com to read more and to see who else made the list.
