Before Lady Gaga, there was Madonna. For 30 years, the songstress has reinvented herself in dramatic fashion. From risqué bridal gowns to matador-inspired looks, her chameleon-like transformations have established her as one of the most influential style icons of our time. Today we celebrate the original Queen of Pop on her 57th birthday with a look back at three of her best looks.
1. At the First MTV Music Awards in 1984
Singing “Like a Virgin,” Madonna dropped jaws when she crawled around on stage in this skimpy frock – undergarments fully exposed. Her stand accessory? A belt buckle reading “Boy Toy.”
2. On Her Blonde Ambition World Tour in 1990
There may never be a (cone) bra as recognizable as this Jean Paul Gaultier creation. Though first seen on the runways in 1984, it wasn’t made famous until Madonna wore it in stadiums around the globe.
3. At the 63rd Annual Academy Awards in 1991
Imitation is the finest form of flattery, so we’re going to go out on a limb and say Madonna has a thing for Marilyn Monroe. Designed by Bob Mackie, her dress was paired with a standout date: Michael Jackson.
