Everyone has an opinion. If you love Hugh Jackman (or Jennifer Lawrence, or Tim Burton, or anyone), someone else may not. And that’s okay. Check opposing names on your respective Oscar ballots, disagree over champagne and appropriately themed cookies, and move on. This is an evening for glamour, gowns – and friendly banter.

Know Amour from Argo. Even if you’re mainly there to critique the fashion, you should have a rough idea of what’s going on. No one expects you to be an expert on every single movie, but know the nominations. Missing this detail is like going to a football party and asking who’s playing. 

Avoid spoilers. On the opposite end of the spectrum, don’t talk about major plot points or endings unless you know everyone in attendance has seen the movie. (Tip: If you’re starting a sentence with “I couldn’t believe it when…” or something similar, you’re probably giving away too much.)

Chat during commercials. Speeches are sacred in awards-show land. (Remember Jodie Foster’s at the Golden Globes? No one would have wanted to miss that.) Be respectful and keep it down until there’s a break in the action.

But most of all – have fun. The biggest night in movies only comes around once a year.

Pre-Wedding Primping
The big day has finally arrived (with no jitters in sight), so gather the bridesmaids, pour the champagne, start the hair and makeup, and crank up these nuptial numbers. Upbeat and playful, some songs may inspire the use of a hairbrush microphone.

Football Fun
Given the upcoming game this Sunday and the so-close-we-can-almost-taste-it Super Bowl (go Pats!), these game-inspired songs are only appropriate. “Eye of the Tiger” isn’t on it, but pretty much any football-themed song ever (with video) is.

Workout Warrior
Shockingly (insert sarcasm here), there are only about a thousand playlists to choose from for fitness: some perfectly timed to your cardio and weightlifting routine, some that inspire endless running endurance, and some that are crafted specifically for exercises like yoga.

Road Trip
For something like this, I’m not convinced a stranger’s playlist will make the cut – but it certainly helps you get started. No matter how long your trip will last, make sure you’ve got tunes that help you stay entertained and alert. Number one on my list? “Low Rider” by War – call me cliché, but it’s an awesome song.

Cooking
Every chef should have a playlist like this while creating masterful dishes. With a smooth combination of 22 songs that includes Vampire Weekend and Estelle, your meal is practically guaranteed to turn out well (but if it winds up in the garbage, you can always press repeat and try again).

Toddler Dance Party
When arts and crafts time is over and the outdoors are off-limits, meet your new best friend. Curated by Andrea Towey, founder of Junior Art and Music (JAM), these are the songs that will keep the kiddos happily bopping along (bonus: they’re parent-friendly, too).

Bad-Day Stress Release
Let’s not tiptoe around the subject: we’ve all been there, and sometimes you just need some angry music to get over the stress of the day. With Eminem, Alien Ant Farm, and Guns N’ Roses starting off the list, you know it’s bound to get the job done.

Valentine’s Day
It’s almost February – so let the romancing begin. From videos of the best lovey-dovey duets and love song favorites to a list that’s specifically tailored to the phenomenon known as young love, any one of these song collections is sure to set the mood for your sweetheart.

Obama’s Campaign Playlist
I didn’t know it either, but apparently even the President has a playlist (I wonder if he has a theme song?). Jumping all over the place from No Doubt to James Taylor to Al Green, it’s safe to say he has eclectic tastes.

1. The Polar Express
   This holiday blockbuster pulls me in with its spellbinding scenery – similar to the book’s illustrations, which I loved growing up.
2. Home Alone
   Not only is this John Hughes classic hilarious, the dysfunctional McCallister clan always makes me feel better about my own slightly (okay, very) weird family.
3. It’s a Wonderful Life
   Simply put, this touching holiday classic warms my heart better than a cup of hot chocolate.
4. A Christmas Story
   I triple-dog-dare you not to like this classic flick.
5. White Christmas
   With Bing “Mr. Christmas” Crosby himself, this holiday film is as charming as the beloved song.
6. Love Actually
   Not only does it have a killer soundtrack, this romantic comedy reminds us that the holidays are about love, family, second chances, and making memories.
7. Miracle on 34th Street
   No one does Kris Kringle better than Edmund Gwenn in this 1947 classic. Whenever I think of Santa Claus, he still comes to mind.
8. Elf
   Ron Burgundy, Ricky Bobby, Buddy the Elf – when it comes to comedy, Will Ferrell can do no wrong (at least in my book). And when it comes to picking a favorite, Buddy takes the maple-syrup-covered cake every time.
9. A Charlie Brown Christmas
   It’s a tradition – I fall in love with Charlie Brown and his sad little Christmas tree in this anti-commercialism classic year after year.
10. The Santa Clause
    This Disney favorite is a movie the whole family can enjoy – and then rent sequels two and three.

While the main draw of Halloween is easily the candy (who doesn’t love a holiday dedicated to sweets?), watching scary movies is a close second. From scare-you-out-of-your-seat classics to family-friendly varieties for the kiddos, these frightening flicks are essential to a horror movie marathon (just add popcorn).

Hocus Pocus. Between Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker, this movie is a Halloween classic that NEVER gets old.

A Nightmare on Elm Street. If you weren’t an insomniac before, you will be after watching this movie. “One, two, Freddy’s coming for you…”

The Witches. This Jim Henson production (yes, you read that right) teeters on scary-movie territory, so it’s perfect for not-quite-ready-for-horror-flicks kids.

BeetleJuice. Full of wit, whimsy, and sometimes creepy moments, this cinematic masterpiece shows why Tim Burton is the king of the strange and unusual.

The Shining. This iconic Stephen King–inspired thriller haunts you long after you hit the stop button. Spooky fact: Jack Nicholson’s famous “Heeeere’s Johnny” line was actually ad-libbed.

Ghostbusters. Because every thrill-fest needs a side-splittingly funny break.

Poltergeist. The fact that this 80s film franchise is said to be cursed (due to premature deaths among the cast and crew) just makes it that much more scary.

The Exorcist. Simply the kind of movie where you spend half the time under a blanket.

Casper. When it comes to a family fright fest, this ghost story should be at the top of your list.

Friday the 13th. Hockey fans beware: watch this movie, and you’ll never look at a hockey mask the same way again.

Sleepy Hollow. Two words: Johnny Depp.

Halloween. The movie that launched Jamie Lee Curtis’s career may not be the first slasher movie, but it’s definitely one of the best.

Psycho. Because no scary movie marathon is complete without a little Alfred Hitchcock.

Now, this episode is worth watching for three very solid reasons:

1) The pure fact that a glittering Heidi high-kicks it to the wazoo next to 36 professional Rockettes on stage. And loves it, mind you. (To the point where I got nervous and thought she’d gone all me, me, me Tyra Banks on us – but I digress.)

2) It’s an hour and half of instant Halloween inspiration. (True life. The end of October is closer than you think.) The challenge – to design a dance costume for the Rockettes – lends itself quite well to numerous costume ideas, from Elena’s “Las Vegas cheerleader” to Sonjia’s “disco turkey” to Fabio’s fish-meets-Xena Warrior Princess.

3) Chris’s silver-on-nude New York skyline dress, which was a clear frontrunner from the moment he mentioned the idea and almost (almost!) makes me want to dance on stage in front of a bjillion people. Dmitry’s cutout dress was another top pick, but apparently guest judge Debra Messing is worried about scaring away all the “little, little” children who frequent the venue.

Ah, there’s that beloved fall word – outerwear. I was psyched to see a bevy of luxe coats strut down the runway. (Perhaps even in my favorite fall color, oxblood?) But, alas, the results left much to be desired. Think: bizarre fringe and oddly popped collars draped over totally blah outfits.

Still, the episode had its moments – mainly Elena related, of course – including these gem-like one-liners:

Christopher, on Dmitry and Elena: “They’re like Boris and Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle.” (So. Spot. On.)

Elena, on Christopher’s jacket: “[It] looks like a Snuggie. An ugly-[expletive] Snuggie.” (If only they made Snuggies in a nice fall camel.)

And my very favorite. Dmitry, on Elena: ”To kill the witch we need a silver bullet and a wooden stick.” (For future reference, D-man, a stick will do you no good. You’ll need a stake.)

Let’s hope next week brings some designs we can actually rave about. Until then, auf wiedersehen.

I teared up in the last five minutes of the show.

Now, please don’t tell anyone. I mean, it’s a reality TV show, for goodness’ sake. And it’s not like the episode was particularly unusual – the challenge was to design a cocktail or evening dress that would be manufactured by Lord & Taylor. Some really nice final pieces (and one pretty brutal one MK likens to a “field hockey uniform“), but nothing tear worthy.

But those last five minutes? They were just downright touching.

I’d tell you why, but that just doesn’t seem fair. What I will tell you is this: hard-as-a-tack Elena cries, too. I mean, sobs. In front of the judges. (She does have a soft side under that suit-of-armor exterior.) And Boston-native Sonjia sobs. And Taylor Momsen lookalike Melissa almost cries. And, on a random note, freegan Fabio spends the episode wearing a completely effeminate crown of flowers around his head. (This, coming from a guy who wears dresses, shouldn’t have surprised me.)

Yes, things get a little teary eyed – to say the least. And I’ll leave it at that.
