SPACEStv’s Urban Gardener Talks Indoor Flower Arrangements

One of the most frequent comments I receive about urban gardening is what a release it provides for city dwellers. Urbanites are confronted by the concrete jungle on a daily basis, and a little bit of green can go a long way toward refreshing a worn-out attitude.

This is also true of the green we bring indoors – a fresh bouquet of seasonal flowers can turn any dark corner or austere front desk into a welcoming, refreshing experience for anyone who walks by.

Here, read up on my tips to create an awe-inspiring indoor arrangement:

Know context matters.
Consider the room or space where the arrangement will be.

Pick the vessel.
The arrangement should be in proportion to the container.  Use the rule of thirds. For traditional displays, the container should be one third of the total size and the arrangement should be about two-thirds of the total size.

Choose a feature flower.
These are usually the stars of the floral world (roses, peonies, sunflowers, etc.). They like to stand on their own and hold court.

Have a few backup dancers.
These are usually flowers that like to appear in groups or sprays. Use a design motif like texture or color to either contrast with the feature flower or complement it (think goldenrods with sunflowers or thistles with roses).

Don’t forget the greens.
This is how to keep your arrangement personal and fresh. Try something unusual like stapling a long leaf in half or wrapping one of the fleshy leaves around the inside of the container, under water.

Let your imagination take over.
Pair your choices. Think random rather than symmetry. Remember that simplicity usually wins over complexity. Create relationships between elements. And keep your mind focused on the point of the arrangement in the first place: to create something that makes you smile and relax a little as you walk by.

Our NDI Florals Boutique opens Thursday, October 25, at 11AM ET.

Blogger Spotlight: A Chat with Dallas Shaw

After chatting with Dallas Shaw, I’m officially jealous. This woman has done what we all want to do: she’s taken sheer talent and passion and (literally) turned it into a career – oh, and she also owns the company. From watercolor fashion illustrations for coveted names like Chanel and Ralph Lauren (she even does “save the dates”) to personalized styling services, there are few things this fashionable Delaware-based wonder woman doesn’t dabble in. So it’s no wonder her Boutique’s turned out much like her: elegant and current, but spiked with artistic allure.

1. Tell us about the Boutique you curated. What are your favorite pieces?

This Boutique is exactly what you’d expect from me: a bit of casual boho and a bit of glam. I chose only pieces that I would wear (and I’m notoriously very picky) and the end result is very “me.” I have so many faves from this boutique. There is a Doo.Ri turtleneck dress with a tulip hem that I think would be amazing paired with black tights and booties for winter. The colorblocked Casadei bootie is perfect for everyday wear. And there’s an amazing Matthew Williamson vest. I’m usually not a vest girl, but this time, I’m in – going to wear mine over maxi dresses.

2. You seem to be a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to fashion – how did you get started?

I already had a job at the Disney Design Group when I decided I wanted to work in the fashion industry. I didn’t have any contacts and really didn’t know how to make that happen – but I loved everything about the fashion industry so I used the talent I already had and started my own business. Now I work with just about everyone in fashion, so I’m really proud that it all worked out in my favor.  It took a lot of hard work and very long hours, and I have always had an amazing amount of support from creatives online, so that helped kick-start my career for sure. I am lucky that people enjoyed both the work and my personal taste.

3. What has been your favorite client or project to date?

I don’t have one favorite – they are all favorites at this point. Every project is more fun than the next and because it’s my own business, I can pick and choose which projects to work on. I wasn’t always able to do this, but now I make sure that every client that I take on is a great fit and really fun for me. I am very fortunate that I get to be doing what I do every day and I am constantly redesigning my role so that it always stays new and exciting.

4. You have seriously enviable personal style – what are your tips for perfecting a signature look?

Thank you so much. I know there are a lot of rules out there, but I believe that if you really want to perfect your own “signature look,” you have to be true to yourself and wear things you really love and feel good in (not just things magazines are telling you to buy). If you are doing that, then you can begin to own your own look – very naturally.

5. Where do you find inspiration for your illustrations?

Everywhere in the style industry – fashion shows, beauty products, magazines, Pinterest … you name it.

6. What is your favorite trend you’re seeing for fall/winter?

If you have been following my Instagram and Twitter, you probably already know this, but I am so excited about all of the camo pants I am seeing in stores. I wore a pair last week to an event and it was so much fun to mix with a girly top. And comfy too.

Our Fashion, Bauble, & Shoe Picks by Dallas Shaw Boutique opens Friday, October 19, at 11AM ET.

Stiletto Beats Talks Fall Shoes

Photo credits: Charles David, Dolce Vita, Loeffler Randall, and Shopbop

Fall has never felt fresher and the shoe department is full throttle with key details that make my heart skip a beat. Look out for these cherry-on-top finishings that will take your shoe collection to the next level:

1. Lace-ups. In true Victorian fashion, lace-ups are everywhere. Strap up with sky-high booties like these from Charles David – they’re both sexy and comfortable.

2. Tassels. Getting inspiration from the home décor department, tassels are spot-on embellishments to classic loafers. Dolce Vita does it right with their Bronx Tassled Loafer in red.

3. Cap-toes. Putting a modern spin on the swing-era, cap-toes are finally making a comeback. Two-toned with stud details, Loeffler Randall’s Nadine is utter perfection.

4. T-straps. Keeping with the vintage vibe, Jean-Michel Cazabat channels the 1920s with a colorblock t-strap pump that combines the old with the new.

3. This Time Tomorrow

4. Natalie Off Duty
This NYC-based fashion model looks just as good off the runway as she does on it. And we love how every photograph makes us feel just a little bit nostalgic.

Locks and Trinkets Shares Her Latest Rue Obsession

Ever since the Rue La La bus ride on our Road to Magic I have developed a slight obsession with the site. Rue La La’s timed sales have you feeling like you’re on Supermarket Sweep and have to pack your cart before time is out! (Did I just date myself? Supermarket Sweep? Anyone?)

So I set my alarm bright and early to get these Cynthia Rowley wedges and I’m so glad that I did. They are the perfect combination of height and comfort. These wedges are almost 6 inches and are more comfortable then some of my 4-inch heels. A girl always needs a pair of heels she can walk in all day without catching a case of the hobbles. (Yes, we’ve all been victim to them at some point in our lives.)

Needless to say, I was happy that Rue helped contribute to my shoe addiction. I see more alarms being set in the future!

It’s a Blogger’s World (We Just Live in It)

The crisp fall weather has us craving pumpkin, spices, and heart-warming comfort food. So we’re relying on these bloggers to supply us with plenty of mouthwatering recipes to get us through the season.

1. How Sweet It Is
Recipes served up with a side of humor. Expect lots of s’mores and bacon. We mean lots of bacon.

2. Chasing Delicious
Beautifully written prose meets gorgeous food photography. Plus, find a wealth of kitchen tips that double as wall art.

3. The Beeroness
It’s time to throw that awful “girls don’t drink beer” stereotype out the window – blogger Jackie proves that every woman should have some craft beer in store (because it makes every dish taste that much better).

4. Bakerella
Because you can never have too many sweets. Especially when they’re seasonal. (Hello, new office party hero.)

Sequins & Stripes Dishes About Kate’s Verbena

With the days cooling down, my list of things to do this fall has become pretty extensive! Starting with moving into my new office, which is why these desk accessories would be absolutely perfect for organizing and decorating my new space.

When it comes to decorating my apartment, candles are my favorite way to create a cozy atmosphere. The fact that these are moody and sophisticated makes me love them even more.

Another item on my to-do list for fall, is to host a chili dinner for my friends. I have been on the hunt for the perfect welcome mat for our new front door, and was thrilled to see this monogramed number in the shop! So pretty and personal.

Finally, I have been begging my boyfriend to take me on a fall picnic (complete with candy apples, cider). How perfect would this cheese board set and picnic pack be for my date? Now, only if I can get my boyfriend to agree.
